Enemy Within – As the finale of DI Rays begins, Supt Ross Beardsmore (Ian Puleston-Davies) talks about the death of Rav Mochani. When DI Rachita Ray (Parminder Nagra) is asked to speak, she looks at Patrick Holden (Patrick Baladi) and doesn’t say anything out of line. Next, DS Kwesi Edmund (Peter Bankole) tells the team about the gun part at Pawn Haven. It’s from a 9mm Taurus handgun and it matches the gun first used to shoot Frank Chapman. The gun was destroyed using an angle grinder. They discuss the possibility that Dave shot his father. Kerry Henderson (Gemma Whelan) tells Rachita she will be there when she interviews Amara Dhawan. Suzie (Lauren Chapman) picks up one of the Chapman girls at school because they need to talk.

Liam Payne (Sam Baker-Jones) gives Charlene Ellis (Witney White) her earring back. When Rachita enters, they show her CCTV footage from Greenhills which shows Amara meeting with a doctor. Ray sends them down there to identify who she’s meeting. Once they leave, she checks Liam’s computer and learns he’s the one who reported her reckless behavior to Beardsmore. Liam speaks to Charlene about DI Ray and whether she’s a good boss. She finds out what he did. They speak to the receptionist and learn that Amara was meeting with Dr. Mark Stenbury. Liam and Charlene try to visit Mark at home only to find out that he’s killed himself in his vehicle. Amara is questioned about Sajna. Rachita alleges Sajna was brought over to be an organ donor for Jasmin. Frank Chapman found out and Rav was trying to protect Sajna from Frank.

Liam interrupts the interview to tell DI Ray about Stenbury’s suicide. Ray suggests he agreed to do the operation because he was indebted to Rav. She wants to speak to Liam later. Rachita returns to the interview room where she tells Amara about Stenbury’s suicide. Amara says she only knew that it was going to take place at a private clinic. Amara said her daughter has kidney failure so she couldn’t risk it. Rav told her that Sajna would be taken care of after the operation. In return, Rav would get the contract. Next, Kwesi tells DI Ray that another DNA belonging to the Chapman family was found on the gun part. There’s also a partial print that matches one of the unidentified prints found on the door handle of Frank’s car. It doesn’t belong to Dave. Ray says one of the Chapmans is Frank and Megan’s killer.

Suzie gives her fingerprints and a DNA swab. Then, Rachita speaks to Liam in private to ask why he made a complaint about her. She asks how she’s been reckless. Liam insists he never said that. He goes on to say it was only a concern and he told Kerry she needed more support. Liam says Kerry must’ve told Beardsmore who started putting pressure on him. Ray confronts Kerry to accuse her of trying to get rid of her. She plays the recording for her so Kerry can hear what she said. Kerry says Beardsmore is from the dark ages and she hates working under him. She pleads with Rachita not to report it. Lucy and her daughter provide fingerprints and DNA samples. Kwesi says they’re going to need Amy’s prints too, but they’ve been unable to get ahold of her. Suzie tells someone on the phone to keep their mouth shut.

Clive tells Ray that he has evidence the mystery number from the WhatsApp group belongs to Beardsmore. Ray goes to Patrick to tell him. Patrick suggests laying a trap and following Beardsmore to the source. Rachita knows it’s risky but it’s too big to ignore. Clive finds a picture of Frank with Laura Kirkby from the 2004 swimming team. He tells Liam about Laura who was Lou’s daughter. She’s deceased now. In the car, Clive tells Ray he believes Beardsmore keeps the burner in his car. They speak to Lou and Lisa about Laura. The day after Laura’s 15th birthday Lou came home and found she’d taken a whole load of pills. She died. Lou blames Frank who was a pedophile. They found her diary and learned Frank made her do things. Ray goes to the school to speak to someone about Amy.

Amy is private, but she spends a lot of time with a girl named Shabnam. Ray speaks to the girl about Amy. She ends up leaving without saying anything of importance. Ray follows her and notices her using her phone. She approaches Shabnam to ask what she knows and who she’s texting. Shabnam shows Rachita her texts with Amy. She explains Amy’s aunt gave her another phone. She also picked her up from college. Shabnam hasn’t heard from her since then. Ray calls Liam to say Frank may have abused Amy. Suzie is busy packing a bag. She gets a call from her man who says Rachita is at the college. Suzie tells him to do it. She can’t get in touch with Amy. Liam tells Rachita where Amy’s phone last pinged. Suzie’s man ends up chasing Rachita in his car. She causes him to wreck before getting out and removing his mask.

Rachita calls it in. Liam calls to confirm Amy might be at the hospital but her room is empty. They soon learn she’s on the roof. Rachita runs up to speak to her. Ray tells her that she knows about Frank who is no longer in control of her. She insists she can help if Amy tells her about what happened that night. Suzie arrives and tells her not to say anything. Amy eventually says she just wanted Frank to admit it but he wasn’t listening. She only meant to scare him. Frank tried to get the gun from her and it went off. Amy says she told her dad who told her to go home. Ray pulls her back from the edge. Suzie doesn’t think she’s thinking straight. She goes on to say there’s no proof. Amy says there is because she recorded the encounter. Ray and the team watch the encounter at the police station. Rachita tells them about Amy’s bracelet which had Frank’s blood on it.

Kerry says Amy has been charged with attempted murder, but she’ll likely get a custodial sentence because of what she’s been through. When Suzie returned from Spain, Rav convinced her Rav was responsible for Frank’s murder. That’s why Rav was kidnapped. She could face 14 years for assisting an offender. Liam asks why Frank sent the photo of Sajna to Rav. It is believed Frank was trying to blackmail Rav into bringing over children for sex trafficking. Beardsmore interrupts to say Claire Doyle and the academy will be investigated for historic sexual abuse. Ray says the murders were about family instead of a turf war. Clive calls DCI Rich Hands to tell him someone has told on them and he needs to tell everyone else in the group.

Clive meets Ray in the car and says two of them have left the chat. There’s no activity from Beardsmore. Ray worries they’re wrong about him having the burner phone in his car. He arrives and gets into his vehicle before being caught red-handed with the burner phone. Ray accuses him of committing an offense under the Malicious Communications Act. Beardsmore asks if Henderson knows about this. He ends up coming with them to Henderson’s office. Beardsmore complains about what has happened. Ray tells Kerry about the evidence they have against Beardsmore. He warns Kerry to be careful if she still wants him to recommend her to the promotion board. Kerry calls Detective Chief Superintendent Tucker. She asks them to come over to arrest Beardsmore for malicious communications and perverting the course of justice.

Kerry asks for his burner phone. Ray tells the team that Beardsmore will be suspended with immediate effect. She tells Clive that Sam will be proud. Before Kwesi leaves, Rachita tells him he’ll smash the DI exams tomorrow. Kerry approaches Rachita to ask if she’ll submit her recordings to Professional Standards. She’s withdrawing her job application from East Mids. Ray mentions that a superintendent position is opening there. Patrick Holden visits Ray at home and they go to the bedroom. Next, Ray visits Sajna. She speaks to her mom about what will happen to her. Rachita tells her mom that she called them out for what’s been happening. She formally submitted her evidence against the force.

 

DI Ray Review

The finale of DI Ray was exactly what one would expect. There were pretty much no surprises in the entire episode. Beardsmore was sent down and removed from his post so Kerry Henderson can possibly take over. Patrick and Ray’s relationship bloomed in minutes and they likely had sex.

Clive had to bring down Beardsmore just to get back with his girlfriend, Sam. As for Rav and that whole situation, it was pretty much a nothing burger. Amara’s actions were overlooked and explained away because many people would do exactly what she did. The ending to the Chapman saga was much dumber.

The conclusion pretty much threw everything in the prior five episodes in the garbage because none of it really mattered. Frank Chapman had to be an even bigger villain so he was turned into a pedophile at the last minute. His granddaughter Amy was created to be the shooter. We’ve seen this so many times before and there’s no doubt the writer has as well.

Of course, the writer is playing both sides of the aisle here so they couldn’t let Amy receive any punishment. Instead, she was charged with attempted murder and given a custodial sentence. In the real world, that justice system is never that fair and balanced. It’s common to see accused get charged with murder just by being at the scene or providing the firearm.

Yet, we’re expected to believe that Amy would be charged with attempted murder when her intended victim actually succumbed to his injuries. Authorities would argue that her gunshot could’ve been the fatal one all along. The sullen performance from Nagra has gotten old very quickly. Even after that case is solved, she’s still mopping around the office like she’s on the verge of tears. At the very least, no one will miss Ian Puleston-Davies’s robotic voice although it’d be better to just end this mess.

It’s laughable that this is even billed as entertainment when it’s nothing more than rhetoric. In 2024 when there are a million hours of British crime dramas, it’s impossible to recommend this one.
