As Devils gets underway, Dominic Morgan (Patrick Dempsey) speaks at the investment firm. He turns his attention to Massimo Ruggero (Alessandro Borghi) who he refers to as a shark. Massimo thought it would be a good idea to short Greece and his assumption paid off dividends. We watch as the members of the New York London Investment Bank follow the numbers. Thanks to Massimo’s help, the firm made a lot of money. We catch a quick glimpse of a man lying in a pool of blood. After that, we learn about the Lehman Brothers collapse and how other banks were built back better than before. Then, Massimo watches as Edward Stuart (Ben Miles) speaks with someone upstairs. Massimo speaks with Dominic who invites him out for a drink.

They chat about the promotion and Dominic admits he is supporting Massimo. He is worried though because Edward doesn’t like him. Dominic admits he is a racist but he doesn’t think that will stop Massimo and he doesn’t want to lose him. Dominic wants to know how he knew to short Greece and Massimo says it was instinct. We see a young woman with a Nokia phone on the front lines of the protests. She gets a message telling her to move on because there is another job for her. Moments later, Massimo visits the club and joins his friends. Paul (Harry Michell) is outside drinking. Eleanor (Pia Mechler) and Kalim (Paul Chowdhry) believe Massimo is going to be named vice-CEO and they want to become head of trading.

Then, Massimo receives a note that was left on the table. It encourages him to come to room 609. He leaves and tries to visit the room before running into Sofia Flores (Laia Costa). She is a reporter and she wants to know more about Massimo shorting Greece. Then, he goes to the room and gets a lap dance from a woman wearing a mask. He receives the mask and recognizes the woman as Carrie (Sallie Harmsen). She runs out of the run before Massimo can track her down. Meanwhile, Paul speaks to a woman about Dominic’s speech until Massimo arrives and tells him about Carrie. They leave and discuss Carrie’s new line of work. Massimo is worried that someone went to a lot of trouble to make sure he saw Carrie.

Carrie is his ex-wife. Massimo tells the others to look through Ed’s portfolio and see what they can find. In the morning, Massimo speaks to Professor Wade (Ken Stott) and asks him for a favor. He wants to know if Wade has any bright students eager to impress. When the call ends, Massimo goes looking for his wife. Massimo speaks with his friend about Carrie and her paintings. He is adamant that he is going to find her because he thinks she is in trouble. His friend agrees to help. Then, we jump over to the school of economics. Oliver Harris (Malachi Kirby) speeds through the exam and leaves the classroom. Professor Wade catches him and learns he is being paid to sit in on an exam for another student. Wade scolds him because it isn’t his first offense. After that, Wade tells him he has a job for him.

Massimo calls his pals and learns that they’ve found a way to strike back against Stuart but they’ll need to move quickly. They think they can make Ed responsible for 50 million in losses. Massimo agrees with the plan and tells them to short Davenport but use outside brokers so nobody will know it is them. He thanks them as well. Oliver attends a seminar conducted by Davenport Biotech. After the speech ends, Ed speaks to John and asks about someone shorting his stocks. Ed says he’ll look into it but that there better no be any surprises. He reminds John that they both have a lot riding on this. Oliver Harris somehow downloads Ed and John’s devices while standing nearby. Massimo tells Kate is going for coffee before leaving his offer. He leaves and runs into Ed on the elevator. Massimo believes Ed is stressed but Ed doesn’t want his concern.

They argue a bit about people like Massimo getting involved in this line of work. Ed says banking used to be a noble profession about protecting people’s money and not gambling. Massimo says he was born low so he can only go up. As for Ed, he can only go down. Sofia Flores runs into Massimo n the parking garage so he chats with her a bit. Then, he meets up with Oliver and they chat about Davenport and he and Stuart meeting with a reporter from the Financial Times. Massimo wants Oliver to listen to their conversation. Oliver wants to know why but Massimo won’t say. As for Carrie, she entered the country a few months ago on a British passport and is apparently living on cash.

That night, we learn that the protects continue in Athens. Sofia meets up with Massino at his flat. They chat about the things that have been exposed about Massimo online. Then, they discuss the interview which is about the financial situation in Greece. Sofia says some people believe the best way to predict the markets is to cause them. He asks if she thinks his bank is causing Greece to fail and she says she thinks someone is. Massimo says he’ll have to give it some thought. She asks for another interview but Massimo says one is enough before making her leave. When she is gone, he finds a recording device she hid and watches the footage. Then, he has a flashback of sleeping with his wife only to wake up alone. He watches the video of Sofia again and again before calling Kalim and telling him he doesn’t want security involved.

Massimo says Kalim needs to check their system because they might’ve been hacked. Then, we join a funeral. Dominic speaks about the loss of a son. He was a young man of privilege but served his country. Nina (Kasia Smutniak) asks Massimo to take her home so he does. She says Dominic ran John away. Dominic wanted John to come back and beg for a job but John refused to him that satisfaction. Massimo says the news of John’s death destroyed Dominic. After that, Ed speaks with Dominic while Massimo waits inside. Dominic enters and thanks Massimo for bringing Nina home. Dominic says Ed is paranoid and believes Massimo is plotting against him before he asks about Carrie. Massimo makes an excuse to leave before meeting with Oliver and getting him ready for the meeting.

When Oliver arrives, he learns that his table is much further away than he expected and that is going to make it difficult for him to spy on Ed. He tries to use Bluetooth but that doesn’t help either. He watches John’s movements before returning to Massimo. He admits he was too far away to hear anything. However, he found out that Davenport trembles and has been seeing a neurologist so he might have a medical condition. Massimo wants to find out more about that and he wants Oliver to check to see if Greg has been trying to find his wife. Massimo returns to work and speaks with his colleagues about Davenport and his potential medical condition. They’re worried they won’t be able to find a media outlet to run the rumor. Then, we see a guy talking about Julian Assange.

Daniel Duva of Subterranea speaks with a reporter about Assange and some of his work. Massimo calls Sofia and tells her he needs to see her. She meets with him at his place and he confronts her about planting a camera in his flat. He wants her to help with information about John Davenport. Ed arrives at the office and finds a newspaper report about Davenport being bullish on expansion. He speaks with Mark on the phone and learns that he is going to pull his investment. He checks the Internet and finds that the news about a potential health problem has been released. Oliver sends Massimo an address and tells him to get over there now. It has something to do with his wife. She has been found. Massimo confronts Greg who says she doesn’t want to see him.

Massimo walks through a drug den and finds Carrie out on the ground. They rush her to the hospital immediately. Davenport holds a press conference and confirms that he has been diagnosed with Huntington’s disease. Massimo and the others believe Ed is out. Dominic asks to see Massimo. Dominic tells Massimo that he should’ve told him about Carrie. He says the board is not going to make him his vice-CEO because of a bipolar drug addict who is still Massimo’s wife. Massimo says it was a setup and someone brought her back to London. Dominic wants to know if he is loyal. Massimo leaves without answering. Massimo goes looking for Ed who has fallen or jumped to his death. Massimo says he hears the devil speaking to him in his ear and he strokes his evil. The devil’s biggest trick is flattering us so we don’t see that the devil is us.

 

Devils Review

I am not sure what to think about Devils. I was a bit distracted and had to rush this recap because of work and so much stuff going on. However, I wasn’t blown away by it. It was way too fast there in the beginning with the camera constantly jumping around. Things slowed down a bit halfway through and got a little better. I am not sure how much I will like something like this but I may watch a few more episodes. It was just okay and a bit cheesy at times.

It might be a little too far-fetched and all over the place. Time will tell if it gets better. The episode scores a 6.5 out of 10.
