As the episode begins, Jess (Cush Jumbo) and Steve (Matthew McNulty) visit Tom in the hospital. Meanwhile, we see a young guy walking through the street in his underwear. Investigators scour through the woods and it appears the young guy, Dylan (Lewis Gribben), at a party with a bunch of other people. Tom (David Tennant) is driven home by Steve. Tom stands out the gate and looks inside. Then, he speaks with investigators about his relationship with Kate (Anna Madeley). Jess comforts Tom when he begins crying during the interview. He insists Kate loved her children although she had trouble when Charlotte died.
He says Kate was just barely over the limit and she wasn’t worried about going to court. Tom explains that they’d usually do bath time together and read a story. It was late so Kate decided they would skip the bath and she put the kids to bed. It took him 10 or 15 minutes before he went to bed. He unloaded the dishwasher, locked up, and switched off the lights. Tom begins crying while talking about the way Kate posed the bodies. He says there wasn’t an argument or anything to set her off. The detectives offer to let Tom see the kids but he doesn’t want to do that. Jess steps in the other rooms and the grandparents ask if Tom has said why.
After that, Tom cleans himself up. Jess asks him if Kate said anything at the end but Tom doesn’t answer. He says he needs to look his best for her. Tom is taken to the church for the funeral. Jess notices a stranger in the back during the funeral. Once outside, Jess speaks with the stranger who introduces herself as Sacha (Seline Hizli). She is there for teacher training. Jess reveals Kate talked about Sacha from time to time. Sacha doesn’t believe Kate could do something like that and she thinks Tom is putting on a show. On the way to the cemetery, Jess and Tom hold hands until she has a flashback of sleeping with Tom. The detectives are there as well and Steve says it is normal. Steve tells Elliot to stop being mean.
Tom makes a speech inside the church. After that, he places the name plaques near the graves. During this time, one of the investigators watches more footage of Tom and the girls. Moments later, Sandra (Lisa McGrillis) introduces Jess and Steve to her boyfriend Luke (Jack Greenlees). Jess overhears Sandra saying it is unbelievable what Kate did. She knows since she is a mother. Then, she argues with Sandra about her nearly 28-year-old boyfriend. He will be moving in soon. Jess turns her attention to Simon (Jamie Michie) who isn’t happy that Kate wasn’t mentioned during the funeral. Jess steps outside to collect herself but notices someone has vandalized Kate’s name plaque.
She cleans off the marker. After that, Jessica and Steve go to the hospital so they can learn about her IVF. This is Jess’s second round. She has a flashback of taking Kate a bottle of wine. Jess is crying so Kate comforts her. Jess tries to wrap her head about Kate’s actions. Again, we see another flash of Kate and Jess talking and smoking. It seems Kate is trying to convince her friend that not having kids isn’t so bad. She encourages her to enjoy it while it lasts. Dylan is finally brought into the police station. He is drunk and lost his bike somewhere along with his clothes. One of the officers gives Dylan a pair of shorts. Steve looks at his computer and sees the victim’s foot which has two small wounds. It could be the pine needles.
Moments later, Jess finds out that Simon is being interviewed by the detectives and she is next up. Jess tells the investigators about Kate’s cerebral palsy diagnosis. She was there through everything but Kate didn’t say too much about her marriage. We see a flashback of Jess helping Kate into bed. Kate says she loves her and they seem very close but Tom walks in and interrupts them. Steve goes into the woods and we see someone running through those woods at night. Steve finds the leftovers from a party. Jess heads online and finds a crowdfunding site for Tom’s family. Seconds later, Steve finds the bike. Sacha and Jess go out together that night.
Sacha reveals that she slept with Tom but it felt like he was manipulating her. She was heartbroken and he used that against her. That ended up hurting Sacha’s friendship with Kate. Jess believes she was manipulated by Tom too. We see that he was rough with her by pushing her head against the wall during intercourse. When Jess goes home, she tells Steve she cheated on him. She contemplates if she should tell police. Tom says police suspect Steve is responsible for the murders. Tom goes out to a bar and gets drunk. He returns home later that night and jumps into bed with Jess. The following day, Jess tends to the wound on Lew’s arm. She sends him downstairs for cereal before Steve accuses her of waiting for the embryos to go in before telling him about the affair.
Then, Jess tells the investigators about the rough sex she had with Tom. Steve pays Dylan a visit at work and tells him he found his bike near the Kendricks’ house. Dylan doesn’t know how his bike got there. Steve accuses him of having a party and taking narcotics with his friends. Dylan refuses to comment. Steve wants to know if Dylan saw anything and if the party was on the night of the party. Dylan says he doesn’t want to get anyone in trouble. As Jess leaves the police station, she spots photos of Kate on a bulletin board. She recalls Kate suffering with her health. Jess steps outside and listens to a voicemail from Carol. Jess is asked if she is okay to collect him from Callum and Ruth’s.
Jess picks up Tom and asks him if he told police what happened with them that time. He wonders why he would tell them that and Jess lies saying she didn’t tell them. She takes Tom to Carol’s house and he gets into bed right away. In private, Carol tells Jess she knows a little bit about what Kate went through with Charlotte. Dylan is taken to the station and interviewed by the detectives while Jess takes food to Tom. He thanks Jess for the food while Dylan is asked which girl it was. He says it was Emily and he knew because his little cousin is in her class. Jess asks Tom again if Kate said anything at the end. Dylan says Emily was running and fell.
He caught up with her. Tom asks Jess what she wants before getting naked in front of her. Dylan confirms her dad caught up with her. Jess gets a call from Steve who tells her that they have a witness who says it was Tom. Jess tries to leave the house quickly but Tom is there by the door. He gives her a hug and tells her he loves her. He claims Kate wasn’t in her right mind at the end and that is all he can figure out. Tom watches Jess as she drives away from the house. In a flashback, we see that Dylan lied and actually saw Kate pick up Emily in the woods. Nevertheless, the cops arrive to arrest Tom.
Deadwater Fell Review
I am not sure what to think about Deadwater Fell. It is good like 20% of the time but painfully slow 80% of the time. The episode mostly focused on the funeral of Kate and her girls as well as Jess’s cheating. The funeral consumed a good 20 minutes or so. Then, it took 10 or 15 minutes for Jess to come clean about cheating on Steve and alerting the police. Dylan was spotted walking half nude through the streets at the beginning of the episode but only showed up at the police station midway through.
The pacing of the show is off. Once we reached the end of the episode, they started throwing stuff at us left and right. Why didn’t they get to the point much sooner? I really don’t care about Steve’s relationship with Jess. I don’t care about any of the characters for that matter. I am not sure why but I am eager to know what happened but I think we’re going to be disappointed. If I wasn’t going to recap this show on this site, I likely wouldn’t put up with it.
Even then, I don’t have enough faith in the writers. I am not convinced they’re going to give us a satisfying, creative ending. The show is a real disappointment considering the actors and actresses involved. The episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Previous recaps of Deadwater Fell are available on Reel Mockery.
