Davey & Jonesie’s Locker Series 1 Episode7 Recap

The Big Game – Episode 7 opens at Davey’s (Veronika Slowikowska) and Jonesie’s (Jaelynn Thora Brooks) locker with a spirited debate of what it would be like if they could choose their jump destinations. Although Jonsie has to think of her destination, Davey already has a destination in mind. Much to her surprise, she gets her wish!

While Davey is bursting with excitement, Jonesis is quick to remind her of the universes they thought were going to be awesome but turned out much different. Much to Jonesies’ surprise, Davey agrees and proposes a visit to Mr. Schneider’s (Dan Beirne) lab for confirmation.

Jonesie is concerned by Schneider’s lack of concern over the portal. While they are ordered to take their seats for class, Davey assures her all they need to do is discover the episode’s storyline and blend in. Emile’s (Nikko Angelo Hinayo) and Sierra’s (Erika Swayze) plea for help with pranking the school’s rival gives Davey all the information she needs. Although she isn’t too excited about a prank episode, a letter from Abbott (Kevin Osea), asking to see her after class changes her entire disposition.

Before Davey can rush off to her meeting with Abbott, Jonesie asks what role she needs to play. Davey is in the middle of telling her to work on the prank when a suspiciously dressed stranger causes her to remember Glimmerdale’s serial killer-inspired season 1. She assigns Jonesie the role of learning more about the stranger.

Davey uses her knowledge of Glimmerdale’s plot to sway her meeting with Abbott in her favor while Jonesie follows the suspected serial killer. The trail leads Jonesie to an awkward meeting with several students that has her questioning if they are actually in a Glimmerdale universe. She returns to Davey with her discovery. Already upset about missing out on nearly kissing Abbott, Davey accuses Jonesie of overthinking things. An argument ensues when Jonesie tells her that she is only seeing what she wants to see. As the intensity of their bickering continues, so does the hysteria around them. Before too long, a cheering Emile and Sierra interrupt them, and Jonesie is dragged away by Principal Debbie Neighbors (Evany Rosen).

Davey attempts to go after Jonesie but finds the allure of Abbott and his promises of access to the basement’s secret malt shop too much to resist. Davey is spirited away to Soda Pete’s Malt Shop while Jonesie finds herself in detention. She incorrectly assumes she is in luck when Schneider turns out to be the detention teacher, but he appears to be stuck in some kind of loop. He ends up locking her in the lab, but much to her surprise it is the suspected serial killer that gives her the idea of escaping through the ventilation system.

Although Pete’s Secret Malt Shop exceeds Davey’s expectations, it doesn’t take her long to realize things aren’t what they seem. Her suspicions are confirmed when Emile becomes violent over her trying to leave. He tells her she can’t leave until she helps them defeat the Sludge High Seahorses. She agrees to help and wastes the next several minutes spewing the plots of popular past TV series. This further enrages Emile but Davey uses the misdirection to escape.

Davey arrives in the corridor outside Schneider’s office just as Jonesie climbs down from the venting system. Although they are together now, Emile and the other appear right behind them. The suspected serial killer soon cuts off their route and unveils himself as a lobster. When Jonesie puts two and two together and realizes they are in a simulation, they are revealed to be in Universe 9701 with Lobster Emile.

Jonesie soon deduces that they are in a simulator, leading Lobster Emile to explain the entire reasoning behind the simulation. According to him, it was an attempt to trick Davey and Jonesie into revealing how they would defeat the seahorses. Much to everyone’s surprise Lobster Schneider (Greg Tarlin) also shows up and reveals that he was the stranger in the trench coat. His excuse for using the disguise was to keep the authorities off his trail.

Learning of Lobster Schneider’s betrayal sends Emile into a hysteria rage but thankfully a seahorse brandishing a leave blower intervenes and attacks. This gives Schneider, Davey, and Jonesie time to escape back to the portal. Despite his betrayal of his species, Schneider tells Davey and Jonesie that he’s working on a weapon of mass destruction that will eliminate the seahorse species once and for all. After Davey and Joensie go through their portal, a wormhole opens, and out pops from the future Schneider’s seahorse son (David Thomlinson/Kyle Dooley) who tells Schneider he is about to make a horrible mistake.

Davey & Jonesie’s Locker Review

Not a horrible episode but the ending felt extremely rushed and convoluted. The whole bit with the warring species was interesting but the trench coat character got a bit confusing. When Davey and Jonesie were trapped at the end, the footage made it seem that the trench coat character was Lobster Emile then minutes later Schneider confessed to wearing the disguise.

Although I’ve never seen Riverdale, it wasn’t hard to pick up the references. The Hell Mouth and Terminator reference might have been a little less obvious to the younger generation. I certainly appreciated the throwback. All in all, still a horrible series with even more pitiful execution. I’d give this episode a 4 out of 10.
