Davey & Jonesie’s Locker Series 1 Episode 5 Recap

Return To Fantasmanaria – As the fifth episode begins, Davey (Veronika Slowikowska) and Jonesie (Jaelynn Thora Brooks) come out of the portal. Jonesie admits she isn’t in a rush to get back to the mess they left behind. Davey believes she sees the Tree of Craving nearby. They made it up when they were kids and it’s supposed to grow whatever food they want. They question why all their old stuff is there. Someone calls out “Davendora” and “Joneselot”. Davey thinks they’re in the fantasy world they made up when they were eight. It’s called Fantasmanaria in Universe 7032. Mr. Schneider (Dan Beirne) shows up moments later and informs them they’re stuck here because of the state of the science room.

Unless they can find the materials he needs, they’re going to be stuck there. Davey and Jonesie think about their childhood and call on Plurp. After Plurp makes some modern science stuff, Mark Shirt (Parker Lauzon) arrives to tell Davey and Jonesie they’ve been summoned by the Prince for an official quest. Plurp tells Schneider they’re going to have so much fun. Abbott (Kevin Osea) tells Davey and Jonesie that Fantasmanaria is saved now that they’ve returned. He explains that a great evil has stolen the Book of Fantasmanaria which is their life source. Davey seems worried about reading what they wrote in the book a long time ago. In private, Davey and Jonesie talk about sneaking into the basement, defeating Sierra, and getting the book.

Davey suggests doing the quest in full to avoid another anomaly. They agree to do it before Mark arrives on the Gumdrop Express. Schneider laughs after Plurp produces a motherboard. Davey and Jonesie run into Joyce (Sydney Topliffe) who has been turned into a door. Joyce asks them several math questions. Davey seems to get irritated while answering them. Schneider complains about being taken advantage of and never being appreciated. Plurp gives him an issue. As they continue their quest, Jonesie checks on Davey once again. Before long, Emile (Nikko Angelo Hinayo) appears in front of them. Before he’ll invite them to his party, he wants to be dazzled. He wants to see the routine or their old handshake. Davey ends up doing the routine by herself.

Once she finishes, Emile lets them pass. Jonesie wonders if Davey is mad at her for forgetting the routine. Stephen Schneider continues complaining to Plurp. When Plurp asks to change the subject, Schneider begins talking about his father. Then, Davey and Jonesie ride the Gumdrop Express again and think they’re at the end of the quest. Davey panics and thinks they should go see Schneider instead. They find that Snarlox isn’t the great evil. They reach the book and open it. The pages flip until they reach crossed-out words. Davey clearly doesn’t want Jonesie to read it. Davey mentions that Jonesie went away the summer going into 7th grade. Jonesie made friends with another girl and kept sending her postcards. When they got back, Jonesie kept hanging out with the girl and didn’t hang out with Davey.

Davey admits she expressed her feelings in the notebook at the time. The girl from camp, Emily S (Jackie Pirico), appears and is the great evil. They hide behind a table before Emily shoots spitballs at them. They run. Schneider manages to get the portal back online with Plurp’s help. Plurp gets upset and tells Schneider he’s what’s wrong. Jonesie asks Davey what was in the book. Davey reveals Emily is going to turn Jonesie into a sheep when she catches her. She admits she freaked out because she thought Jonesie was leaving her behind. Davey goes on to remind Jonesie that she doesn’t even remember anything. They begin reciting the Fantasmanaria anthem. Jonesie says her bad memory doesn’t mean Fantasmanaria didn’t mean anything to her. They sing the anthem together and deal with Emily. Peace is restored to Fantasmanaria.

They write “the end” in the book causing things to disappear. Plurp continues scolding Schneider until it explodes. Once the girls make it back, Jonesie belittles Schneider for killing Plurp. They rush to the portal just before Schneider disappears. They make it to the portal just in time.

Davey & Jonesie’s Locker Review

The fifth episode of Davey & Jonesie’s Locker was cleverly written with some interesting turns. It also told viewers a bit more about Davey and Jonesie’s childhood relationship. The basics are mostly good although the series clearly had a small budget. If the series was a little better, its low-budget feel would probably make it even more charming.

Unfortunately, this isn’t going to be for everyone and a lot of viewers will likely hate it. This episode was a good example of that based on the type of humor being delivered. Some are going to like it while others will be quick to look elsewhere. On the plus side, the series is straightforward and requires very little from viewers. There is no need to understand any difficult concepts or try to resolve any investigation along the way.

If the series was a little more grounded, it may have pulled off the crazy storyline. Then again, that could’ve turned off anyone who likes it now. The episode scores a 4.5 out of 10.
