Nova Conspirators ALLBLK

Conspirators Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Wrong Place – The episode begins in a small Washington, DC restaurant where a woman approaches hacker extraordinaire, Jackson Fields (Chase X Drewery), gives him and flash drive, and tells him to leave. Jackson only briefly gets to dispute the matter because the young woman and her two cohorts soon take the restaurant hostage. Despite this, she tells him to leave out the back and hack the drive.

Elsewhere, Nova Hansworth (CJ Obilom) and her sister are hosting a house party when they notice they have run out of beer. Venn though the store is right down the street Nova’s sister, Jellina (Kelsey Delemar), is hesitant about letting her go alone to replenish the supply. Despite this, Nova ends up going alone.

At the same time, Jackson arrives home, where he immediately logs online and tells his friend Pete (Andrew LaHaise) about tonight’s events. Pete tells him that he just seen the robbery on the news and the girl is now dead after a standoff with the cops. Jackson is hesitant to have anything to do with the drive, but Pete offers to hack it for him if he’ll share his desktop. Despite not wanting to get involved, Jackson has no other option when he learns that some of the code on the drive is corrupted. Although the drive is corrupted, there is a media file on it and they are able to play some of it. The video shows some politician named Hudson Murdock (Keith D. Robinson) sleeping then flashes to what looks like a dead body in the bed. Before Pete and Jackson can learn anymore, they discover the code has a tracker built into it. Pete is soon shot in the head and Jackson is back on the run with the drive.

Nova is on her way back from buying beer when she runs into a frantic Jackson and recognizes him from high school. He decides to go to the party after she invites him. Shortly after this, he learns that she and Kevin (Simeon Othello Daise) have been running Hudson’s IT Department. Although he doesn’t say anything, she can tell something is wrong and addresses it. He tells her that a friend of his died tonight She consoles him and tells him that being around friends is probably just what he needs. After she invites him to join her and the others, he tells her to give him a few minutes.

Nova and her friends are discussing government conspiracies when Jackson interrupts. After a brief reunion, Jackson receives an anonymous call that tells him they know who he is and will find him. He leaves without much of an explanation and grabs the wrong backpack on his way out. Jackson is wandering around the streets when he is approached by two police officers (Lyon Beckwith/Felix Quinones) who want to search his bag. Jackson not only refuses the search but runs. As he runs, he is shot in the back. A young man from Nova’s building, Tyler (Christian Tait) happens to record this on his phone and later shares it with Nova and her friends. When they go back to the spot where Jackson was shot, no one is there.

Nova wakes early the next morning so she can talk to Hudson about what happened with Jackson. Before leaving for work, she briefly meets with Jellina, who tells her that she and Osylus (Kyrel Jaundoo) are going to check out Jackson’s personal address. When Nova does arrive at work, she has an unpleasant run-in with Hudson’s new admin and niece, Corrine (Jordan Gabriel). Shortly after this, she realizes she has Jackson’s backpack, but before she can do anything about it, Hudson shows up.

While Osylus and Jellina realize that someone has broken into Jackson’s apartment and taken his computer, Nova tells Hudson about the incident with Jackson. After she gives him the drive, he tells her to get whoever saw the incident with Jackson and get them to meet him at the church so they can get to the bottom of what is going on. When Tyler does show up at the church and learns that he is being put on the spot with Pastor Murdock (Sean Blakemore) and his brother Hudson, he acts like he doesn’t know what Nova is talking about.

Later that evening when Nova gathers the group to discuss the situation with Tyler, she also tells them about mixing up backpacks with Jackson. They were already upset about her putting Tyler on the spot without warning him but the news about the flash drive doesn’t help matters. It also leads to them stealing the drive back. Although they manage to steal the drive back and bypass the tracker in the code, they miss the one in the flash drive itself, which leads to someone showing up at the campaign office. This is where the episode ends.

Conspirators Review

Although this was the furthest thing from original, it could have been really intriguing. Who doesn’t love a good government conspiracy? The story was still interesting but the problem was the poor execution and horrendous acting. I do not mean this offensively, but it was unique to see hacking with an urban edge. I’d be interested in seeing where the rest of the series goes from here, and for that, I’d have to give the premiere at least a 5 out of 10.
