Episode 4 begins with several of Concordia’s residents sharing stories of how the town’s perpetual state of surveillance not only improved their lives but saved them. This segues into a discussion of quality in everything from healthcare to education and employment opportunities.

Fatemah Amin (Ahd) reveals the meaning of the article to the Concordia investigators. According to her, she and her ex-husband bought a facial recognition software company 25 years ago. Her ex would then license the use of that software to governments and companies with questionable track records. Fatemah not only claims ignorance of his dealings but assures them that she immediately backed out once she knew. Juliane Ericksen (Christiane Paul) isn’t happy about being blindsided but proposes opening Concordia’s financials to all comers.

Elodie Cailleux (Alba Gaia Bellugi) is wrangled from her slumber in the backseat of a car, drugged, and later wakes in a loft above what appears to be a room of computers. It doesn’t take her long to locate Leon (Jonas Nay) and disavow his methods before inquiring about Tessa Vogel (Maeve Metelka). After only telling her that Tessa will return, he also reluctantly agrees to deliver a message to her father, despite the enormous risks.

Juliane shares her strategy with Hanna Bremer (Karoline Eichhorn) and warns that they might have some investors back out in the process. Once Juliane tells her it’s best for the city, Hanna promises that they will speak after the press conference.

Isabelle Larsson (Nanna Blondell) questions Marie (Alice Dwyer) to learn that Oliver Miller (Louis Landau) wasn’t any more social at work than he was outside of work. Marie does mention one possible friend Chester Pappas (Filippo Jingberger) who is absent for the funeral. Isabella attends the funeral later that day where she briefly speaks with Azeem Mahmoud (Mohamed Achour) before spotting Chester and pulling him aside for a private chat. Chester doesn’t have much to add other than the fact that Oliver was making a real effort to get out and meet people. Isabelle soon realizes that Cathy Miller (Dulcie Smart) is watching them from inside the house.

Juliane spends several minutes getting ready before she and Fatemah sit down for their interview. Juliane and Fatemh waste little time during the interview directing the viewers to Concordia’s website where they view the city’s financials. They also blame the breach and Oliver’s death on Faceless before assuring that the German launch will be proceeding as planned. Juliane says it will take years before Kopwitz is fully transformed but the foundation for the Concordia system is already in place.

Elodie becomes after putting so much work into the security breach and not obtaining any results.  Her fury only grows when she learns that Tessa hasn’t returned and isn’t likely going to do so any time soon. Although he hasn’t had much success tracking Tessa and Elodie, Adrian Grant (Peter Seaton-Clark) shares what he’s learned with Noah Ericksen (Steven Sowah) and Thea Ryan (Ruth Bradley).

While AJ Oba (Kento Nakajima) requests a meeting with Juliane, the mysterious young Oriental girl (Yuho Yamashita) monitors Alexandre’s (Hugo Becker) and Talon’s (Edward Wray) progress to Concordia. It’s mere seconds later when they are dropped off to meet Thea 5 minutes outside of the town. Thea spends a few minutes getting them settled in at her apartment before returning to work.

AJ briefly meets with Juliane and although the conversation isn’t revealed, she immediately visits Dr. Peter Blom (Duncan Green). He later not only announces to the higher-ups that he’s stepping down from board but he nominates AJ as his replacement. Both Fatemah and Noah are stunned but don’t get a chance to react due to Peter’s rushing off.

Isabelle becomes frustrated when she receives news from Oskar Eklund (Set Sjostrand) that his superiors are turning the case over to Interpol. Her frustration only increases later that evening when she tries to discuss this with Noah and he points out that Interpol is better equipped to handle the case.

Elodie is equally frustrated and when she finally gets some time with Tessa, she can’t help but point out how she feels used. Tessa attempts to assure her that’s not the case at all but that’s about as far as the discussion goes for the moment.

At lunch, Thea apologizes to Alexandre for not being more present and promises to make it up to him. Her statement provides him the perfect opportunity to bring up the possibility of relocating to France where they would be closer to his family. Although Thea remains calm, her facial expression says it all and when he mentions putting Veronica in a home, it makes matters more strained. The discussion ends with him telling her that he would never force a decision upon but things cannot proceed as they are.

Much later that night, Isabelle is woken by a call from Mathilde with the news that the system has registered a distress alert with Peter. He appears to be pacing back and forth at the memorial. Overhearing the conversation, Noah opts to go and tells Isabelle to stay in bed. When Noah later meets with Peter, their conversation is just as cryptic as it is brief. Peter does say that he’s always tried to do right by Juliane. When Noah says he has, Peter claims he could have made things better but she wouldn’t let him. That’s as far as the discussion goes but Noah does volunteer to walk Peter home.

Isabelle confronts AJ the first thing the following morning after learning that her access to Oliver’s files has been restricted. He claims the investigation is over and she doesn’t need to concern herself with an internal investigation because it’s being handled. Mathilde’s expression suggests that she doesn’t approve. Isabelle only feels worse when she visits Cathy looking for answers. After a quick apology and assurance that she wants to help, Cathy invites her in. In the process, Isabelle learns that Oliver was just as withdrawn in his personal life as he was in his social life. She does learn that he enjoyed spending time playing games on his computer which eventually leads to her learning that Oliver was researching Jesper Claesson (Anton Petzold) and a Swedish school shooting. Isabelle’s ensuing memories suggest that she was also somehow involved in the shooting. Before leaving she also learns that Oliver discovered Jesper was being treated by Dr. Blom, who failed to see any prior warnings that Jesper might do something so rash.

Armed with her discovery, Isabelle visits Edvin Claesson (Dietrich Hollinderbaumer). Although he is out, she leaves her number with Camilla Clesson (Astrid Ericsson). At nearly the same time Juliane receives a startling phone call that sends her into a frantic state. Isabelle must get the same alert because he races from Edvin’s house in a similar panicked state. When she finally arrives at a lake area, Isabelle learns from a Paramedic (Julia Charlotte De Rossi) on site that Peter has committed suicide which is questionable because it appears his body was weighed down with rocks.

The episode ends with Isabelle and Edvin meeting near Concordia. Edvin tells her that Peter contacted him the night before and requested a meeting but never showed. Upon learning of Peter’s death, Edvin doesn’t appear shocked and claims carrying a great burden such as Peter did could lead to suicide.

 

Concordia Review

I wouldn’t say the episode was horrible, although I don’t know if it was as good as the previous one. It was certainly more revealing there is no doubt about that. I didn’t think I would like the political agenda tied to the school shooting, but I’m coming around to it. It’s nothing new and the story of the counselor missing the signs is overplayed but all in all, I feel the series is done fairly well. It’s a bit odd at times because of the vast cultural diversities but I think that is one thing that adds to the intrigue. I’d give the episode a 5.3 out of 10.
