Flash – As the first episode of Colin From Accounts begins, a man drops off a package before a dog is able to escape the fence. Gordon (Patrick Brammall) is awoken by his alarm clock. Ashley (Harriet Dyer) contemplates messaging James, but can’t seem to decide what to say. Instead, she receives a message reminding her that they have a safety training course at the hospital in 30 minutes. Ashley gets a drink of alcohol before heading out. As she walks to work, she is nearly hit by Gordon’s vehicle. She flashes her breast at him before continuing. Gordon yells at her moments later because he has hit the dog. After the intro, Gordon and Ashley try to figure out where to take the injured dog. An older woman walks by and accuses Gordon of hitting the dog because he was on his phone, but he blames it on Ashley’s nipple flash.
As they take the dog to the vet, Ashley asks Gordon if they can use a different story instead of mentioning the fact that she flashed him. She asks him to say he got distracted because he thought she was someone famous. They arrive at the Hopscotch Veterinary Hospital where the vet gives him medicine for the pain and oxygen for the shock. Yvette says the dog has significant spinal damage and he is a stray. She can’t say whether he’ll survive since he has been struck by a car even though Gordon calls it a nudge. In the best-case scenario, he’ll be a high-needs dog and they may need to manually express his bladder and bowels. The dog may also need wheels for his back legs. When Gordon hopes they can do mates rates, Yvette asks if they’re mates again. Gordon believes that means she is saying no.
Yvette warns them that he won’t make it if they put him in a shelter so the other option is to put him down today. After learning they just met today, Yvette gives them a couple of minutes to decide what to do. Gordon doesn’t think they can keep the dog since he runs a business and is never home, but Ashley suggests taking the dog with him. Ashley doesn’t want to feel like they’ve killed a dog. Yvette returns and learns from Gordon that they want to put him down. Lisa comes in to ask them about urns and getting a print of the dog’s paw. When Yvette tries to euthanize the dog, Ashley shouts for her to stop. She tells Gordon that she’ll take care of him and it won’t be a burden before they learn that it’ll be around $12,000 to treat the dog. Ashley claims she can do a GoFundMe or something to raise the money.
Lisa tells them how they did a GoFundMe campaign to take her mom to a euthanasia hotel in Switzerland. Gordon wants to film Ashley saying she was responsible. He introduces himself as Flash since that is what everyone calls him. They agree to meet back there at four. At the Echo Park Brewery, Gordon tells Brett (Michael Logo) about Ashley and how she flashed him. Gordon is forced to admit to Chiara (Genevieve Hegney) that he is pulling about $12,000 from the business to get the dog treated. Brett doesn’t think she should get mad at Gordon since it was a magical day for him. Ashley goes to the hospital for the safety training. Ashley tells Mega about the dog and the guy. She admits she thought it was odd when Gordon didn’t offer to pay half. Ashley is thinking about getting a new SIM card to contact James since she thinks he blocked her.
Since she was late, her boss asks her to stay and do some rounds. When he learns that she had alcohol, he says it will have to go on the report. Gene farts and they all start laughing. He gets upset and tells Ashley to go up to pathology to get some papers for him. Megan (Emma Harvie) offers to take her spot, but Gene makes Ashley go instead. Once she gets there, James (Tai Hara) asks if she called his mom this morning but she denies it. He wishes she wouldn’t make up excuses to see him at work. Ashley tells him how she came in for training and got sent up there by Gene. She questions if he still wants her to come to his cousin’s wedding because she has never been to Bali. James will let his family know that it’ll just be him. Ashley tells him that she got a sale far so he shouldn’t be weird if he sees her.
James pleads with her not to come. At the vet, Gordon complains that Ashley isn’t coming back because they didn’t get her details. Once she arrives, Gordon tells her that the dog is still with the vet and they should wait at the nearby coffee shop. While waiting at the coffee shop, they get a call saying the dog didn’t make it. When the guy mentions 12 years, they quickly realize that he isn’t talking about their dog. They carry him out of the vet moments later. Once he drops her off at home with the dog, Ashley runs into Patrick (Nick Drummond) who doesn’t want her to bring the dog inside. Patrick reminds her that the house has a no-pets policy so Ashley tells him about the black mold. Patrick says they painted over that. They won’t let her go inside with the dog. Ashley takes him to Gordon’s place. They put the wheels on the dog and it begins walking.
She learns that he has a unicycle and that he has been singled for a while. Gordon shows her where everything is before he leaves. After using the toilet, she learns that the water isn’t working so it won’t flush. She tries to get rid of the mess using a plastic bag and throws it outside. When Gordon makes it to the brewery, he learns that he missed Broadsheet Beckett. Brett learns that the dog lived and the girl is now at Gordon’s house. Chiara admits she is worried for him because most girls won’t show their breasts on the street and she is now in his home. She urges him to be firm and get rid of her and the dog. Once he gets home, Ashley says she needs to go talk to her housemate but she can’t take the dog. Gordon doesn’t want to help. Ashley asks if he is honestly not going to offer to pay for half of the treatment cost because she is a student.
Gordon claims he was happy to put him down before relenting and agreeing to pay half. He agrees to keep him until she picks him up in the morning. Ashley explains why she doesn’t have anywhere else to take the dog. They talk about their work before Ashley offers him a shot of tequila which she pulls out of her purse. Before taking shots, they try to pick out a strong, human name for the dog. They agree to call him Colin from Accounts. As Ashley tries to leave, she hears Colin barking inside. Gordon runs out to ask for help because the dog is losing his mind. She eventually agrees to come inside and stay the night. Later, Colin lets Gordon know that he needs to use the bathroom. He takes him out in the pouring rain and lets him go.
Colin From Accounts Review
The opening episode of Colin from Accounts quickly set up the story and introduced the main characters, Gordon, Ashley, and Colin. The basics are good although the camera shake is a bit too much at times. It probably would’ve been better if that technique was used a little less, but it wasn’t noticeable at times. The show is silly most of the time, but it has a tinge of seriousness when it is needed.
Gordon and Ashley are likable enough so it should be easy to connect with these characters as the show progresses. Although some parts are quirky and creative, the humor isn’t exceptional as there were no real laugh-out-loud moments in the first episode. Nevertheless, Colin from Accounts makes it for it by being very charming and upbeat. While it isn’t there yet, you can sense the magic right around the corner so the show is going to hit some high points pretty soon.
After the first episode, Colin from Accounts feels like a good binge on par with some of Patrick Brammall’s other works. If the quality holds out, it’ll be a fun, lighthearted show with some unforgettably deep moments. The opening episode scores a 7 out of 10.
