At the beginning of the episode, Kirk Wiley (Paul Higgins) receives more threatening evidence from Des (Daniel Ryan). June (Sally Lindsay) meets with Des and learns that he is going to move the money to separate accounts. He tells her that he has taken a finder’s fee too. Des is worried because he can get 14 years for blackmail. June explains that Hana (Taj Atwal) needs the money now. June is told to go back to the Wiley house and continue on as normal. She does just that. We jump forward and see Lizzie (Katie Redford) trying on her wedding dress at home.
Laura (Samantha Power) tries to speak with Kirk but he is distracted. When she finally gets his attention, Kirk goes on about a wedding veil. Lizzie doesn’t want one though. She gets angry and runs off. June cares for Elisabeth (Elizabeth Counsell). Elisabeth says that she is going to turn someone in. She goes on about telling Kirk’s father about something. That night, Laura tries to talk to Kirk about his problems but he refuses to have a conversation with her. He turns the lights off and jumps in bed without saying a word. The following day, Elisabeth tells June that Kirk is upset because she stole from him. She also lets her know that she heard her talking to her friend.
June gives her a dose of medication to shut her up. Aubrey Turnbull (Dan Renton Skinner) visits Kirk and receives instructions for dealing with the blackmailer. Kirk wants Aubrey to find Des and take care of him so he never returns for more money. Des calls June and tells her that he has the money. He explains that he can give Hana the bank card right now. June tells him to go for it. Aubrey watches Des as he takes the card to Hana’s apartment. When June returns home, Hana asks her why the phone is in someone else’s name. Hana wants to know more about the money but June just wants her to be happy about getting it back. Hana says that she is going to name the baby Sophie.
After that, June attends another meeting with people who’ve been scammed. The woman speaking admits that she would take everything from her scammer or kill him if given the chance. Des tells June that she should be able to leave the Wiley house in a few days but she says she is going to stay. Back at work, June lets Kirk know that Elisabeth wants to see him. They get into an argument and June has to intervene. Next, June goes outside to find Lizzie smoking. Aubrey pulls up. June watches as he hides a gun in his pants before entering the Wiley house. Aubrey tells Kirk about Des. Before June can leave, she is asked if she knows Des Grigsby. She says that she remembers him from school.
However, he was trouble so she didn’t hang out with him. June meets with Des and tells him about it moments later. She is worried that they’ll know about Hana too. Aubrey goes to Hana’s house and collects her man. Then, June watches from a distance as Aubrey confronts Hana. June calls her and tells her to get away from Aubrey. Hana walks away a few moments later. Hana meets with Des and they begin discussing their options. She returns home and fills a needle with drugs. Aubrey shows up at Hana’s apartment and receives a note telling to come to Bluebird Arms. Aubrey goes to the pub and finds June and Des there. He sits down with them and starts discussing a possible deal.
Aubrey wants to kill Des and take June to Kirk. June tries to convince Aubrey to let Hana and Des go but he isn’t having it. June stabs the needle into Aubrey’s leg and injects the drugs. She tells him that it was 100% alcohol and that he has 15 seconds. June leaves before Aubrey dies sitting in the pub chair. Next, June speaks with Laura at home. They chat about their dreams and other things. Back at home, Hana becomes concerned about the money. She suspects that June killed the man who visited. He gets angry and kicks June out of her apartment. June meets with Des and finds out that she is going to leave town. The following day, Kirk learns about Aubrey’s death.
He calls Simon Zima (Geoffrey McGivern) and tells him what has happened. Zima agrees to take care of the bank accounts and meet with Kirk in person. After that, the Wiley family prepares for lunch but Kirk doesn’t want to go. Laura doesn’t give him a choice this time. June thumbs through a book and finds a pamphlet for exotic male dancers. The group goes to the restaurant for lunch. Kirk goes outside and kinds the dementia tracking device. June receives a call from Hana letting her know that the bank account has been frozen. Then, Laura sits down with June and tells her that Elisabeth says she stole the family china.
She is also claiming that June has been plotting with a friend. June laughs it off and Laura does the same. Kirk enters and pulls June aside to speak about the tracking device. He doesn’t buy her story. Their conversation is interrupted by the male dancers enter. While the men keep Kirk busy, June sneaks off with Elisabeth. Kirk goes into a panic when he cannot find his mother. He meets with Zima later. Zima says that he is there as a concerned party. He wonders if Kirk is having a crisis of faith. Kirk says that they need to tighten security. Kirk rushes to the bathroom before receiving a phone call from June seconds later. She tells him that she wants her money before the wedding tomorrow.
She demands her 83 grand back. Kirk doesn’t believe he can get that much in cash so quickly but June isn’t going to give him any extra time.
Cold Call Review
I’ve really liked Cold Call. The action is intense and I never know what is coming next. This episode wasn’t so good for June and Des. Kirk and Aubrey found out the truth and they were gunning for Des for much of the episode. However, June showed that she was willing to go even further to get her money back. She killed the man who scammed her in the first place. However, Kirk managed to freeze her account with help from Simon Zima. I would suspect that Des’s account has been frozen too.
Now, June has a hostage in Elisabeth. How far is Kirk willing to go to save his mother? I am not sure he’ll even bother at this point. We’ll find out soon enough. I am interested in seeing how the writers end the show. This episode was good. It scores a 7.5 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Cold Call on Reel Mockery!
