At the beginning of the episode, Cait (Eleanor Worthington-Cox) makes a few awkward comments to Divis (Nikolaj Lie Kaas). Those comments make him believe that she is coming onto him. Moments later, the nightmare awakes Divis. He screams and ends up waking up Cait too. Meanwhile, Amena (Annabel Scholey) makes it to her sister’s village. Andra (Samantha Colley) rushes outside and gives her sister a hug. They intend to feast to celebrate Amena’s return. Queen Mother (Geraldine Chaplin) learns about Amena’s arrival seconds later.
Divis begins acting odd around Cait and decides to make her sleep outside. He says sleeping outside will bring her closer to nature. They’ll build a shelter to protect her from the rain. Meanwhile, Amena’s sister and family carry out a ritual for her return. Queen Mother is worried that Amena has come there to poison them. Divis tells Cait about her next mission and she notices that he is acting awkward. Amena tells her sister about the clan back home. She explains that Veran picked the next Queen but she never succeeded. Now, the gods have selected Amena to rule.
Cait practices while Divis gives her pointers. Then, he performs a spell and pulls a fish out of the mud. After that, we jump back to Amena and her sister. Amena lets her know about the Cantii making peace with Rome. Andra says they have heard many things but they’re not sure what to believe. Andra says Veran told her about a prophecy in which a demon will come to these lands and join force with the dark. The age of the druids will come to an end but a madam may save them if she pleases the gods. Andra fully believes Veran but Amena is skeptical. She encourages her sister to work with Rome.
Andra says the demon is there and the madam is coming. The negotiation continues with Andra suggesting most will not want to pay anything to Rome. Amena accuses Cara (Marion Bailey) of controlling her sister. She reminds her sister that she has absolute power. Divis makes a shelter for Cait/ Harka (Mackenzie Crook) finishes his ritual with Mallin (Tom Rhys Harries) before sending him on another journey. That night, the rain pours down so Cait runs inside of the cave. Divis wakes up and pretends he will sleep outside. He steps out, turns around, and heads right back inside. Divis gives in and allows her to sleep in the cave with him.
They don’t sleep. Cait wants to know what the prophecy means when it says she will turn into a fish. Then, she asks him if he ever had a wife. He gets upset and tells her that the druids have sex. Sex was forbidden for Divis. Even after he was kicked out, he never found a woman. Mallin makes it to their cave but he stays outside and doesn’t make himself known. Divis hears someone and looks for him but he is nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, Amena speaks with her sister’s allies in hopes of convincing them to surrender to Rome. Veran arrives moments later and interrupts. He has different plans.
When Cait wakes up, Divis tells her to get ready so they can head toward the water. Mallin watches them leave. Veran tells Andra that the dead man has returned so they need to act quickly. Ania (Liana Cornell) and the others with her make it to Harka’s camp. She is surprised to see Phelan (Julian Rhind-Tutt) walking around there like a zombie. Veran tells Andra that the gods did not make her sister queen. Amena spots someone she hasn’t seen for a very long time. She cries and asks the person to forgive her but she is taken away by guards seconds later. Her sister tells her that she’ll die for the betrayal.
Ania tries to talk sense into Phelan. He says they both serve the dead man. Harka emerges and notices the marks of Veran on Ania. She claims he deceived her. Ania pretends she is willing to serve Harka. Divis and Cait make it to the water and perform a ritual. He gives Cait something to eat and it makes her ill. He tries to make nice with her but she is already on the ground squirming. He picks her up and tosses her over the ledge. When Cait plunges into the water, she spots the man down there and tries to unlatch the chain. Divis is not happy when Cait emerges from the water with the body.
Britannia Review
The beginning of the episode was a bit too much with the near pedophilia. However, I am not sure this would’ve been a problem way back in the day. The Romans were pretty notorious for bending the rules so I am not sure Divis would’ve restrained himself. For the sake of the show, I am glad he did. Not much happened this episode. Or, I should say that not much happened that made sense.
I am not sure what significance the body from the water is going to hold. I guess Amena failed since her sister is going to side with Veran. We’re leading up to some type of showdown between Veran and Harka. I am eager to see how that ends. I hope they do not blow it and make it stupid or carry it on until another season. The episode was okay. It deserves a 6 out of 10. Previous recaps of Britannia are available on Reel Mockery.
