The episode starts with Veran (Mackenzie Crook). His comrade tells him that the Moon said that the invader must have his victories. That will make him drunk with glory. Veran cuts the rope and says it is their only hope. It appears that Hella (Laura Donnelly) has taken Cait (Eleanor Worthington-Cox) hostage. She forces Cait to drink water. Aulus (David Morrissey) decides to make Vitus (Gershwyn Eustache) the next Praefectus. Together, they visit Queen Antedia (Zoe Wanamaker). Antedia is introduced to Vitus. Antedia wants to clarify the terms of surrender with Aulus. He wants the fortress. She can have the lands. Aulus intends to protect the Cantii. Antedia doesn’t want that.
She wants to kill at least 500 warriors. They take a look at the Roman army marching past. Amena (Annabel Scholey) suggests to Kerra (Kelly Reilly) that the end is near and her reign will be short. She warns Kerra about Lindon (Stanley Weber) burning down the grain storage. Kerra doesn’t want to believe it. Divis (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) floats down the stream. He eventually stops. A bear approaches. Divis says a Druid prayer. He grabs a knife and manages to kill it. Hella continues on her journey. She offers Cait food. Hella suggests that she might not be taking Cait to the Romans. Kerra speaks with Lindon. Amena watches from a distance. Divis attempts to patch himself up.
He finds a spot where a ritual has apparently been performed in the past. He tries to find out where Cait has gone. He sees something and rushes off. Phelan (Julian Rhind-Tutt) gets food for himself and Ania (Liana Cornell). Phelan is unimpressed with the Druids. He doesn’t understand why Veran won’t speak with them. Hella prepares to bury Cait alive. She puts a tube in her mouth to ensure she will be able to survive. Hella runs into Phelan. He shows her where to find Veran. Hella gets inside and that ticks off Phelan. Hella tries to sell Cait to Veran. She wants to know what Veran is willing to pay for her. Phalen continues complaining to Ania. The Druids prepare to pay Hella for Cait. She tells them where to find Cait. Veran knows that she is telling the truth.
He tells his comrade to wait for the moon rising. It will be the first thing Cait sees. Divis watches Hella ride away. Kerra tells Lindon that she intends to speak with the General. He believes that it is too late for that. Veran finally agrees to see Phelan and Ania. Ania tells him that her true name is Brenna. Ania believes she will give birth to Gods. Veran goes into a trance and wants to speak with the Gods. Divis watches as the Druids dig up Cait. Veran tells them that the prophecy is true. However, it is not theirs. Ania is not the vessel. She is not Brenna. She is only Ania of the Regni. She storms off angrily. Lindon admits to Kerra that he has harmed the tribe. He claims that the Druids wanted it and he obeyed. She doesn’t want him punished. She does tell him goodbye.
Cait is delivered to Veran. Divis watches everything. Divis tells Veran that he only came to protect Cait. He wants to know what happens with the prophecy. Kerra tells her father that he was right. Kerra passes by Queen Antedia to meet with Aulus. Kerra agrees to surrender and give up the fortress. She just wants her people to be protected. Not a single Cantii can be harmed. Aulus tells Kerra that Antedia has grim plans for her. Kerra agrees to surrender herself to Antedia to save her people. Aulus accepts the terms of the surrender. He wants to show her how the empire really works. They watch as the Roman soldiers attack the Regni. Antedia hunts for Gildas (Joe Armstrong) as she attempts to escape. Amena and Lindon watch the chaos from the fortress. Gildas is killed during the escape attempt.
Aulus wants one more thing from Kerra. She grabs her knife. He stops her and begins asking about Cait. Aulus gives her one last chance. She tells him to go back to hell. He stabs her. He removes her heart and throws it into the fire. Veran knows what has happened. Ania tells Phelan that she has decided to stay. He doesn’t want to. They say their goodbyes. Veran tells Phelan that the Gods have a fate for all of them. He needs to find his. Phelan is told to find the light. Aulus speaks with Amena. He gives her the crown. Amena claims that the Age of the Druid is over. She says that it is the Dawn of the Cantii. A captive Antedia claims that the Gods are dead.
Veran tells Phelan the prophecy about Cait. She wakes up with Druid writing on her head. She is in the spot where Pellenor was sacrificed. Divis is nearby. He tells her that he knows what happens next.
Britannia Review
For a show that started out so poorly, it definitely got a little better in the end. Is it binge worthy? Probably not. However, Britannia is worth a watch when you’ve completely exhausted your television playlist. It isn’t perfect or even good by any means. It is indeed unique though. The creators obviously attempted to think outside of the box when creating the show. Much of it failed, but there are some bright points here and there. The relationship between Divis and Cait is pretty good.
It is nice to see that they’re not afraid to kill off main characters. The show has somehow gotten approval for a second season. Call me shocked. Since I’ve come this far, I’ll definitely stick with it. The finale was decent. It scores a 7 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Britannia now.
