Danny Bookie HBO Max

Bookie Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

Mahnanga – The season 2 premiere begins with Danny Colavito (Sebastian Maniscalco) being pulled over for doing 109 mph in a 65 mph zone. Being that he is soaking wet from falling in a pool, Officer Wilkes (Eric Allan Kramer) pays him especially close attention. He even makes him get out and walk the line before running his license and registration. After Danny passes the test and comes back with a clear license, Wilkes gives him a ticket for doing 80 in a 65. However, before Danny can get back in the driver’s seat, Wilkes makes him pop the trunk. Danny is somewhat honest about the money, claiming that he works in a cash business and doesn’t trust banks. When Wilkes asks Danny if he doesn’t trust the banks because of the Jews, Danny knows he’s found a militia member and plays that to his advantage. Although he gives him a brick of cash to forget seeing the money, he can’t convince him to destroy the speeding ticket.

Elsewhere at the hospital, Ray/Rayfield’s (Omar J Dorsey) Grandma (Arnetia Walker) thinks she and John Franklin/Frank (Brent Jennings) are being punished because they’ve committed adultery, multiple times. They don’t get long to debate this because Ray receives a call from 307 (Eric Lopez), who claims he needs more time on a payment because of a broken collar bone. Ray immediately recognizes the lie and arranges a meeting later at a gas station.

Lorraine Colavito (Vanessa Ferlito) and Hector (Jorge Garcia) are in the hospital waiting area when Ray tells them that Frank is alive. He also tells them about Danny going to Modesto to try to bring Sandra (Andrea Anders) and Anthony (Maxim Swinton) home.

Danny is greeted by a not-so-welcoming Wendy (Dale Dickey) when he shows up to deliver his best ‘come home’ speech to Sandra. Even though Sandra has always claimed that her childhood was a crap fest, she is hesitant about going back home with him because things are going so well. Danny doesn’t get much longer to convince her because Anthony shows up to tell him that his car is being towed. Things don’t go much better with the Tow Driver (Dennis Cockrum) as he already has Danny’s car hooked up and won’t let him simply move it. It takes Sandra a bit of convincing but she manages to convince the Tow Man to drop the car for $1,200.

While the Colavitos make their way home, Frank wakes in the hospital but can only mutter one word, Mahnanga. As if Wendy moving in with Danny and Sandra wasn’t strange enough, think only get stranger the following morning when she makes him lunch and tries to place a $10.00 bet on the Sacramento Kings. Sandra makes him take the money. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he learns minutes later that Ray has brought his baby, Julian along on their rounds due to Grandma being at the hospital with Frank.

Later that day, Danny and Ray meet Walt Dinty (Rob Corddry), who pitches them a Botox deal. Apparently, Walt has a dermatologist who lost 6 figures on a Wimbledon game and couldn’t pony up the money. Walt is taking the Botox in trade instead and wants Sandra to sell the stuff in her retail store. They agree on a 50/50 split.

By this time, Grandma is becoming frustrated with Frank’s constant muttering of Mahnanga, when Hector and Lorraine show up to offer their assistance. Although Grandma doesn’t know Lorraine, it doesn’t take her long to realize that she is sleeping with Ray. Grandma warns that Ray will get her pregnant if she lets him ride her bareback.

While Danny, Ray, and Ray Jr collect and make payments at the bar, Lorraine sits with Frank, who is still muttering Mahnanga. Things immediately get off to a bad start when Danny and Ray show up at Brad Garrett’s (Brad Garrett) place to collect on a payment and he constantly rides Ray for having his baby with him.

The episode ends with Brad getting knocked flat on his butt after Ray hears enough.

Bookie Review

Although there was no reason to believe there would be a time jump, I was glad to see that season 2 practically started where the first left off. Some series will skip ahead or opt for huge time jumps. Either way, season 2 got off to a great start and I for one am glad to see Dale Dickey joining the cast. I’ve enjoyed her in everything she’s played in and don’t think you could ask for a more spot-on white trash star.

It was also nice to see Ray interacting a bit with his kid and I can’t wait to see what is behind Frank’s chanting. This episode easily deserves a 6 out of 10.
