Spirits Speak – As the finale of Black Snow begins, Anton Bianchi (Josh Macqueen) listens to the mixtape before asking Isabel (Talijah Blackman-Corowa) if she is ready for the big dance. He wants her to trust him that nothing happened with Natasha. He offers to smash the tape because he loves her. Lynn Walcott (Lucy Bell) finds them kissing and tells them to stop. Everyone puts their envelopes into the time capsule. At home, Isabel gets her dress from Aunty Rosa (Lisa Blackman) who doesn’t know if her dad will be there.
Isabel goes to Chloe’s where she hangs out with Chloe and Hector (Fraser Anderson). At one point, Hector goes outside with his camera and records an argument between Isabel and Steve (Erik Thomson). She tells him he is a predator that feeds off black bodies. Isabel heard him with the cleaner and she knows he lied about Niman and Kalip. They stop fighting with Chloe comes out. Before they leave, Steve notices Hector is pointing the camera in his direction. When Victor Bianchi (Rob Carlton) drops them off, Isabel and Anton walk into the formal together.
Isabel is surprised to see Joe (Jimi Bani) there. In the present, James Cormack (Travis Fimmel) tries to catch up with Anton (Alexander England) who is sleeping in a tent. Victor tells him he needs him to pull himself together. He needs to stop hanging around the Baker girl because people are starting to talk. Cormack asks Tasha (Kestie Morassi) if she was with Anton all night because Isabel’s killer could’ve killed Billy too. Tasha confesses that Anton wasn’t there when she woke up. James gives her the pills back before leaving. When Hazel (Jemmason Power) wakes up, she notices that Kalana is gone.
She tries to call her daughter who says she is a goal-kicking practice with Meg. Hazel steps out of her room and learns that Joe knows about Kalana’s dad now. Joe suggests she apologize to Kalana who could’ve had a father. Hazel thought she was doing the right thing. Katherine calls Victor to ask where Anton is. When he learns the detective was asking for Anton, Victor says he’ll take care of it. Anton drives Kalana (Eden Cassady) so she can see it although she is worried about ditching soon. He grabs her phone. Kalana says she just wanted to text Meg to make sure she could cover for her in first period.
He tells her to live on the edge a little more like Izzy did and he’ll give her the phone back later. In a flashback, Anton tells Izzy they should move in together in Brisbane. He offers to go down early to find them a place while she is on the trip with Chloe. She steps outside where she finds Hector throwing up. Hector says the last few weeks have been the best of his life because of her. After he tries to kiss her, Isabel tells him that things will be better for him in Sydney where he can be himself. They’ll also be in each other’s lives. To prove it, Isabel gives him her necklace. Hector decides to walk home because he is so drunk.
Ezekiel pulls up and Izzy notices he has been beaten. He reveals he went to the boss and begged him to tell him where the boys went.  Ezekiel told him he’d go to the police, but Steve didn’t think they’d care about a couple of Kanakas gone missing. He hit Steve before Billy pulled him off and beat the heck out of him. Ezekiel needs his cousin’s passports. Izzy promises to get them for him. She tells him to go see her father. Billy approaches Hector and asks to see the camera. Hector says no before hitting in only to be taken down and held there. Billy takes the camera and leaves.
Anton learns that Izzy doesn’t want to dance and she doesn’t have her necklace. He gets upset and yells for her to f!ck off. Dale Quinn (Gulliver McGrath) tells James that the shoes are still in the queue and they haven’t found anything else at Dalkeith. James believes she was killed somewhere else because of the dirt on her dress. Dale gives him the analysis of her hair and asks what wisteria Sinensis is. James says it is a flower called the Chinese wisteria. He looks for the picture of Isabel in front of the shed with the flower next to her. James calls Hazel asking her to come to the station since he may know where Izzy went that night.
Anton takes Kalana to the shed and gets a picture of her in front of the door. Once Hazel gets to the station, James tells her his theory about Anton being the killer. She tells him that Anton and Izzy used to go to the shed when they wanted to be alone. Hazel admits he took her there and Anton is Kal’s father. James wants her to take him there after Hazel learns that Kal went with Anton. He grabs a handgun first. Kal drinks a beer with Anton while James and Hazel rush to the shed. Anton tells Kalana that they split because Izzy found out he wasn’t good enough for her. In a flashback, Izzy and Chloe find out that Anton is going home with Tasha. They decide to grab the beers in the van.
As they drink, Isabel finally tells Chloe that she isn’t coming on the trip. Chloe gets upset and reminds her she gave up Paris for her. She also claims her dad is the reason she got that scholarship. Izzy argues her dad exploits people like her every day before urging her to ask him about those boys. She claims that Steve is a criminal and a racist. Chloe tells her to find her own way home. Isabel goes to the school to change her letter in the time capsule. In the present, Anton tells Kalana he would’ve tried to get back together with Izzy although he thinks he lost her that night.
His life has felt empty until Kalana came along. He goes on to say she has her mom’s skin and her brains. Anton reveals that he is her father. He says Izzy brought them together, but she is also what kept him from her. James and Hazel arrive and attempt to get Kalana away from Anton. He tells everyone that Izzy broke up with him at the formal, but that isn’t the last time he saw her that night. Anton approaches her at the service station and insists that nothing happened with Tasha. Victor arrives on a motorbike. Anton says he is done lying before saying she died instantly.
Victor says his son isn’t well. He points the rifle at Anton while telling him to step away from the knife. Anton lets Kalana go. Victor runs over to comfort his son. James manages to get the gun away from Victor. James pulls a gun on Victor and accuses him of beating his son to keep him quiet. He suspects Isabel found the boys there. Isabel sees the motorbike so she decides to follow it. When she makes it to the shed, she sees Victor go inside. She gets the boy’s boots and puts her shoes in the washer. Izzy runs back to the shed to check on Kalip who says the boss killed his brother.
He shows her where he has been digging and she notices he is bleeding. Izzy gives him something to put on the cut. When she hears the motorbike returning, she runs through the wisteria plants and away from the shed. Victor returns and tells Kalip it is okay because he has medicine. When Victor realizes someone else has been there, he panics and shoots Kalip. He finds Isabel’s cloth and has to go after her. He finds her with Anton at the service station and beats her with the rifle. James takes Victor away while the bike Izzy was riding is recovered.
James tells Dale to call him when they find the bodies of the boys. At the station, he learns that Vic has waived his right to have counsel present. James tells him that human remains have been found on his property and they believe they’re the two Vanuatu boys. Victor claims it was self-defense because one of them broke into his home and tried to molest his baby daughter. In a flashback, Victor refuses to let them drink until they’ve finished. Kalip passes out. They go to Victor’s house to drink from the faucet outside. Kalip hears the baby crying so he goes inside to check on it.
Victor catches him and gets mad. They try to apologize only for Victor to beat up Niman who yells for Kalip to run. Victor chases him on the motorbike as Isabel watches. Victor says he didn’t get help because they’d try to pin an assault charge on him or something. He was going to leave them there until the boy got better, but he got an infection. Victor went to the SES shed on the night of the formal to get the antibiotics. He claims he was going back to help him only to find he was already dead. When asked if he drove Billy off the road, Victor mentions that he was a drug dealer.
Victor says Billy was as bad as them because he was a piece of crap. Billy dropped the boys at Victor’s place. Then, he was mouthing off at the pub so Victor couldn’t risk him remembering. James tells Anton he is free to go although he should surrender his passport. James doesn’t know what he should do not, but he believes Victor will spend the rest of his life in prison. Katherine comes in moments later and begins sobbing. Outside, Kalana asks Anton why he took Izzy’s hair. Anton explains he couldn’t leave her like that so he took her to the cemetery and laid flowers on her.
He promised her he’d be strong enough to face him down at some point and he’d need proof. He cut her hair and put it in the time capsule. Kalana believes she spoke to them and did what Anton couldn’t. Hazel doesn’t know if Anton could be a part of Kalana’s life. She explains it is her life so he needs to stay away until she is ready. Six weeks later, Kalana gets money from Hazel since she is going to the town with Meg. James visits to return Isabel’s hair to Hazel who hopes he finds answers too. The locals hold a ceremony for the missing boys.
When James gets back to the office, he finds a disk waiting on him. He watches the surveillance video from the prison and sees someone visiting his father. James looks at a picture of Ritchie to compare him to the man in the video. He begins laughing.
Black Snow Review
The finale of Black Snow was decent overall with a few scenes that stood out. While some of the performances were less than stellar, the ones that mattered were good enough and some were great. Travis Fimmel, Jemmason Power, and others were excellent in their respective roles. Some cast members were underutilized because the cast was so large.
Certain aspects of the story didn’t make sense or weren’t realistic while others were modern prerequisites. There could’ve been more in terms of originality from the murder investigation, but Fimmel’s James Cormack was an interesting, unique detective that made up for many of the show’s issues.
As for the final revelation, it felt a bit like a copout and not unexpected. The show built up all these characters and probably thought it would’ve been too risky to make one of them the killer. Instead, they picked one of the least developed characters of the series while the others were dropped from the story.
Despite these complaints, Black Snow will prove to be a good binge for many viewers who are willing to overlook a few hiccups here and there. The series is effectively moody, there are some emotional scenes, and Detective Cormack is strangely absorbing. The combination makes Black Snow a good watch even if it doesn’t leave a lasting impact.
The finale scores a 6.5 out of 10. Recaps of Black Snow can be found on Reel Mockery here. Want to advertise with us? Find out how to do so by following this link. Support Reel Mockery by clicking here.

Did you think that Travis Fimmel looks like a more rugged Leonardo DiCaprio? I could not watch him without seeing Leo. I thought he did a great job as Cormack.
You are correct now that I think about it. I always like Leo’s young roles personally although I am going off topic lol. Travis was mesmerizing in this and really made the series. I’d watch another season for him alone.
