As the second episode of Behind Her Eyes begins, Adele (Eve Hewson) spends time with Louise (Simona Brown) and asks what type of boss David is. Louise explains she hasn’t known David for more than a week but he seems nice so far. As for Adele, she admits she has really never had a job besides working as a florist for five minutes. Since they have money, she doesn’t need to work. They contemplated having children but it hasn’t happened yet and Adele doesn’t have any friends in London. The people she met were older than her and stuck up. Soon, Adele learns that Louise has been divorced for three years and she has an eight year old son named Adam. Adele notices the cuts on Louise’s arm so Louise explains she whacked it on the balcony the other night while sleepwalking.
Louise goes on to say that she has night terrors. When asked, Louise says she has nightmares of scary stuff and Adele must think she is nuts. Adele says she was thinking how nice it is to talk to someone like Louise because she is honest. Seconds later, Adele gets a call from David and she tells him she was out looking for paint samples when she decided to grab a coffee. She lies and pretends she is alone. She tells him when she’ll be home before the call ends. Louise asks her about the old-school phone she is using but Adele says it does what she needs it to do before asking Louise to swap numbers. Louise gives Adele her number before leaving. Before she leaves, Adele asks her not to tell David about this because he is a bit funny about mixing work life and home life.
Louise agrees not to say anything before leaving the cafe. When Louise leaves, Adele sends her a text message so she can have her number too. After the intro, Adele goes home and experiments with the paint samples. She is noticeably happier than normal. She goes to her medicine cabinet and throws one of her pills down the sink drain. Then, we see a flashback of Adele and Rob (Robert Aramayo) sitting on a tree branch together. Marjorie (Carolina Guthrie) lets Adele know that David on the phone. When Adele runs off to get the phone, Marjorie tells Rob that she is in love with David and he won’t have a chance. He insults her and tells her he prefers penis before going inside and eavesdropping on Adele’s conversation. Adele mentions Rob to David and says he won’t have to worry about him because she loves David.
Moments later, Adele gets a call from David on the home phone because he wants to make sure she is home. He tells her that he’ll be home late because he is meeting a couple of charities about some community recovery work. Adele asks him if he ever thinks what the junkies on the estate. She wonders if they want to continue getting high so David suggests he has been waiting his time then. They agree to see each other that night before the conversation ends. Adele gets upset and throws paint all over the wall while remembering other things. When she finishes, we see a mural of trees on her wall. Then, we see a well and a watch at the bottom of it. She goes downstairs and begins looking through some of her old belongings until she finds a book with Robert’s name in it.
She begins reading from the book in question. Then, we see a flashback of Rob asking Adele about her watch. Adele explains that it is David’s and he gave it to her as a present since he can’t wear it right now. He wants her to wear it until she gets out of there. Rob asks if she ever worries that David is too old for her. She says no but Rob admits he is worried she’ll get hurt. Adele says you have to trust people because there is no point otherwise. She admits she loves him and Rob wants to know more about that. David returns home and calls for Adele before joining her upstairs. He doesn’t seem particularly impressed with her mural and asks why she would do that. After dropping Adam off at school, Louise gets a message from Adele inviting her to the gym and offering to get her a day pass.
Louise isn’t interested. When she enters the office, Sue (Georgie Glen) tells her that someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Louise takes David (Tom Bateman) paperwork and he is short with her as well. They get into a spat about Louise knocking first before she returns to Sue admits she was right. She sends a message to Adele and agrees to go with her to the gym. Next, she has to deal with Anthony and his family. Anthony says he doesn’t want to do this because he isn’t an addict.
Anthony gets upset at Louise before David enters, introduces himself, and tries to get Anthony to go with him. David reminds him that it will keep him out of prison so Anthony goes with him. Louise offers the parents a drink while they chat. When the session is over, David tells Louise that he booked Anthony for another session on Friday. As for the extra half hour today, he doesn’t want to charge for that. They agree to keep it secret from Dr. Sharma. That night, Louise has another nightmare about an overdose. She hears Adam yelling for her and saying it is coming. She runs through the hallways before waking up when Adele asks her what she dreams about. In the morning, Adele walks outside and calls for David as he leaves but he doesn’t hear her or chooses to ignore her.
Adele arrives at Louise’s place and says she has a nice flat. Louise gets prepared while Adele walks around and checks the place out. After checking Adam’s room, Adele approaches Louise and says she is looking forward to this but Louise believes she’ll laugh at her. Louise struggles in the gym and Adele says it was impossible not to laugh at her. She tells her to put in some effort and she’ll get better. She invites her to come with her more often. They visit the spa moments later. They talk about Louise taking a day off and calling in since she forgot to schedule it. Then, she learns that they’ve been married for ten years and David’s parents ran the farm on their estate. Adele says David saved her life on the night her parents died.
There was a fire at her house when she was 17 and David broke in and pulled her out. David was sneaking around to see her. They decide to get food until Adele notices what time it is and invites Louise back to her place for lunch. They go back to Adele’s place and Louise is impressed. Adele explains that David worries if she doesn’t answer when he calls so she had to return home. Louise finds out that he calls the landline to make sure she is there and he calls seconds later. When the call ends, they eat together outside. Moments later, Adele approaches Louise and gives her Robert’s book because she thinks it’ll help with the night terrors. Adele says it is rare but people sometimes remember their night terrors. She used to have them and she remembers them too.
She says they’re special and Louise needs to learn to control her dreams. Adele claims everything Louise needs to stop the night terrors is in the book. She says you’ll get to choose what you dream but you’ll have to keep an open mind about things. Adele worries she thinks she is a new age lunatic but Louise says no. Louise admits she went to a clairvoyant after her mother died and the woman knew things even though she only told the woman her first name. She was convinced the woman knew her mom somehow. Adele hands her the book and promises it will help. Louise accepts it and thanks Adele. She goes home and Adam begins packing for France. His father picks him up a bit later and Louise encourages them to have a great time. When she is alone, Louise goes through Robert’s book.
He admits the place isn’t helping and everyone is so dull. He says everyone is out for themselves and this includes himself, but Adele is different. He says she is beautiful inside and out. Plus, she wants to help him. He goes on to say he would do anything Adele told him but she can never see this book. Louise is surprised when Tom arrives at the door. He explains he was checking in since she called in sick but it looks like she is fine. Louise said it was a headache and was killing her this morning but it is better now. She admits it was her son’s last day before he went to France and Tom knows he was acting like a prick so she didn’t ask for the day off. He tells her not to worry about getting sacked before he accepts a drink. When asked, he admits he wasn’t just passing by.
After blabbering a bit, he admits he didn’t want to go home. He wonders if it was fate meeting in that bar but Louise says it was simple bad luck. She explains she met a man she actually thought she could like but he is already married. He says people should always be able to make each other laugh regardless of what happened. They talk about Adele briefly until David says he keeps thinking about Louise even though he knows it isn’t fair. She tries to make him go home but they end up making out. She tells him bye but they continue kissing and eventually have sex. When they finish, they discuss what they’ve done and David says Louise has nothing to feel sorry about. He suggests they weren’t thinking and Louise says she won’t bring this to work.
David kisses her on the cheek before leaving. Adele hears David return home and climb the stairs. She closes her eyes and pretends to be asleep. She turns over and we get a closer look at her mural before the episode ends.
Behind Her Eyes Review
Although this show is interesting, I am a bit confused about everything going on with Rob and Adele. What were they doing in that institution or whatever it is? Adele was likely married before she went inside so I wonder if David had a say in putting her in there. The relationship between Adele and Robert is intriguing though and I question where Rob is right now.
Did David do something to get rid of him? I wish the show would get into its bread and butter. I want to know what is going on and what happened in the past. I can’t be the only one with more questions than answers. Either way, the show is decent. I just hope it gets better as it goes. I’d give this episode a 7 out of 10.
