As the episode begins, Louise (Simona Brown) gets dressed and shows off her bum until Adam interrupts. Adam (Tyler Howitt) tells her that someone is at the door but he didn’t open it because she told him not to. Laura (Charlotte Mills) joins her friend. She sits with Adam while Louise shows off her wardrobe. Once Louise arrives at the pub, she gets a call from Sophie letting her know that she won’t be able to make it. As she tries to leave, she runs into David (Tom Bateman) and knocks his drink onto his shirt. She offers to buy him another drink but David says she doesn’t need to. Before long, they sit down and David explains he just moved into town. When asked she was sitting alone, Louise says her friend Sophie couldn’t make it.
She tries to leave but David attempts to get her to stay. She bluntly tells him that she isn’t going home with him. Before the night ends, David begins kissing Louise but stops and says he can’t do this. He rushes off in the opposite direction seconds later. When Louise goes to work in the morning, she learns that she just missed the new boss. She walks through the hallway and hears Dr. Sharma (Roshan Seth) talking in another room. She looks in and notices David with Adele (Eve Hewson). When the doctor begins showing them around, Louise hides in the bathroom. Later that night, Louise tells Sophie (Nichola Burley) about hiding in the bathroom for a long time.
Louise says David seemed sad before questioning whether he lied to her. She admits they didn’t learn each other’s names. Louise has a nightmare that night and it looks like someone has overdosed in bed or something. She freaks out and gets up for a drink. Next, Adele asks David if he is nervous but he reminds her that it isn’t his first day. He hopes he doesn’t let Sharma and the others down. Adele doesn’t think he will because he is a good psychiatrist. She says she is lucky to have him before taking a pill in front of him. She follows him out and gives him a kiss before he leaves. Meanwhile, Louise rushes to get Adam to school on time. Then, she goes to work where she is greeted by Sue (Georgie Glen).
Sue says Dr. Ferguson is in a meeting until 9:30 so they can relax. Sue hands her a sandwich and Louise gets ketchup on her shirt. Louise goes to the bathroom to try to clean her shirt. Adele goes upstairs and relaxes on the bed. Meanwhile, Louise goes into David’s room and looks at one of the pictures that is face down on his desk. David interrupts and surprises her. She admits it is her and it was no big deal since they were both drunk at the time. She promises not to tell anyone and says nobody will ever know. Then, she tells him she works there too. David says he shouldn’t have done what he did and he can’t explain it. Louise says they should just forget it since she loves her job.
They shake hands moments later. She admits she is from the area so David asks if she can talk him through the area. She shows him the areas on a map and tells him which areas are good and bad. David soon finds out that she has a child but he doesn’t. They talk about the 7-year-old and Louise being divorced. He thanks her for not thinking badly about him. David and Adele hang out with Sharma and drink that night. Adele tells them that two is her limit. David admits psychiatrists are just as messed up as everyone else but they’re better at hiding it. Adele jokes that he doesn’t want her getting drunk and spilling all of his secrets. She says she didn’t mind uprooting her life and moving because it was a good opportunity for David.
David claims she had reasons to move up here as well. She admits she always wanted to live in Central London since she grew up in the country and the city is exciting for her. Adele again says she thinks it is a good opportunity for them. When everyone leaves, David keeps drinking but Adele doesn’t. They agree they had a good night and she wants it to work. She begins kissing him before he says he can’t do this and it has to be the last time. She agrees and says it will be before leading him upstairs. They have sex and Adele tells David she loves him several times. They change positions and continue going at it for a bit longer. In the morning, David gets up and leaves Adele on the bed.
Later, she goes for a walk and listens to music. She stumbles across a man who asks if she didn’t fancy the team misery walk. She admits she didn’t want to join them before he asks if she has seen Mark. The man says he doesn’t think the counselors should be wearing the same shirt for three days. He recognizes Adele as the girl who paints fires. He knows about Adele’s parents because he read about it in the paper. She admits it was horrible before recognizing him as the guy who sleepwalks. He introduces himself as Rob and says they think Adele doesn’t want to sleep because she was asleep when the fire happened. He tells her to paint water next time and tell them the fire represents her grief but the water is washing it away.
Back in the present, David tells her good morning. He gives her a cell phone and a credit card before saying he thinks it is time she got them back. He says he has been looking into the area and he wants to do some outreach work with addicts. As a result, he’ll be away for the weekends and stuff. Adele says it won’t be an issue. At work, Louise gives David documents for his upcoming visits. She makes sure David is happy with the way everything is going. He says he feels like he is in good hands before asking if she has anything planned for the weekend. He claims he is only trying to create a conversation. She says Adam is with his dad so the world is her ostrich this weekend. She spends her time doing laundry at home and going to the grocery store.
Later, she sits around and watches television. She thinks about David before getting ready for bed. She has the drug overdose nightmare again but it is slightly different this time. She dreams of chasing her son through the halls before waking up on the balcony. She checks her arm and finds a bloody wound. The next day, Adam returns home with his dad Ian (Aaron Anthony). Louise agrees to let Ian in before he reveals Lisa has the offer of a house in the south of France for the summer. He wants to take Adam but Louise says that isn’t going to happen. Lisa is pregnant and Ian wants Adam to bond with her before the baby comes. Louise gets upset about his new relationship and Adam listens to their argument. She is angry because Ian told Adam before telling her.
When Ian leaves, Louise tells her son that he isn’t going to France and that upsets him. He tells her he hates her before slamming the door. Later that night, Louise complains to Sophie about Ian and what has happened. Sophie encourages her to let Ian take Adam so she can use this month for a fresh start. Sophie says this is her chance to change some of her life. In the morning, Louise talks to her son about using hate before agreeing to let him go with Ian. As David leaves, Adele tells him she is going to go to the gym and shopping. Louise walks her son to school before going in the opposite direction. She walks around a corner and runs into Adele knocking her down.
Louise recognizes her but Adele says she doesn’t think they’ve met. Louise admits they haven’t but says she works for her husband. They introduce themselves before Louise quickly tries to leave. Adele stops her and asks if she wants to get a coffee together. Louise agrees to go with her to make up for knocking her down.
Behind Her Eyes Review
Although I can see Behind Her Eyes getting interesting with future episodes, the opener didn’t hook me in. Unfortunately, it did a poor job of setting up the major storyline for the season. I am not sure what the purpose of the show is at this point. The show’s description doesn’t give much away either but it makes more sense than the opening episode.
Maybe they shouldn’t have drug this out six episodes? With four episodes, they would’ve been forced to push things along a bit quicker. It was fairly interesting and I think it will get better as it goes. I hope it picks up soon but I’ll likely stick with it anyway. The episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Future recaps of Behind Her Eyes will be available on Reel Mockery here.
