December 19, 2022: “Mayflies” is a TV series about the controversial topic of assisted suicide. The two-part drama is a co-commission between BBC and BBC Scotland.
“Mayflies” is not the typical tale of bromance many will assume, as it kicks off with the developing friendship of Jimmy and Tully, set in 1986, in the small town of Ayrshire in Scotland.
A chance meeting at a concert in Manchester develops into a profound friendship that would be shaken to the core some 30 years later.
When asked what he hopes the audience will take from the show, Martin Compston (Traces, Line of Duty, Victoria) says, “First and foremost it’s entertainment; that’s what TV is, and you hope people enjoy it. But there’s also a big conversation to be had around assisted dying. I’m a huge supporter of hospices – I’m a patron of Ardgowan Hospice in Greenock – and I know people can be treated with dignity and respect when it comes to end of life care.”
