The finale begins several days after the previous episode and suggests that Austin Hogan (Michael Theo) is now traveling alone across London and documenting his experience for an upcoming book.
Thanks to Florence Hartswood’s (Ellie McKay) painstaking efforts, everything is arranged for Ingrid Hartswood’s exhibit. Despite this and Florence’s constant reassurances, Ingrid considers backing out. Although a brief conversation with Julian Hartswood (Ben Miller) confirms Austin’s solo trip, there are no mentions of a book. Being that Austin’s phone has been off for over an entire day, Mel Hogan (Gia Carides) is beside herself. Julian’s assurances faux assurances that he is simply exploring do little to satiate her fears.
Ingrid Hartswood’s (Sally Phillips) anxieties over the exhibit intensify when he joins Heidi (Kate Elliott) and Florence at the gallery. At nearly the same time, Austin discovers that he has a lot in common with fellow writer, Lucy (Boni Adeliyi), whom he meets at a popular hotel. Although they both claim to be writers, Lucy apparently writes for a publication that specializes in celebrity scandals. Her tenure at the hotel has something to do with following recently divorced or separated celebrities.
As time passes, Julian seeks help from the authorities. This doesn’t go well at all and ultimately leads to him taking his search online. This yields even less desirable results. At the same time, Austin shares his book research with Lucy and not only receives incredibly high remarks but invaluable advice. Julian’s online efforts finally prove useful when he notices one of Julian’s posts with Billie Piper (Billie Piper) at the hotel from the tour.
Much to Julian’s surprise, Billie is not only starstruck by him but she provides the crucial tip he needs to uncover the ulterior meaning behind Austin’s note Bill Hogan (Roy Billing) and Mel make the connection at nearly the same time and although they are the first to locate him, they do not approach. It doesn’t take Julian long to show up and convince Austin to leave with him. Before doing so, Austin and Lucy make plans for later correspondence.
Ingrid’s show goes much better than expected and all her sketches sell, except for the one of Julian, which is okay because she opts to buy it. Julian and Austin arrive just in time to catch the tail end of her speech. This is followed by a very brief family hug where Austin breaks the news about meeting someone special, Lucy. He relays this news to Mel mere minutes later and she and Bill make plans to return home via the premium (first) class.
Season 1 ends with the Hartswoods/Hogans returning to Julian and Ingrid’s flat where Julian tells Austin that is he putting writing on hold so he can publish a new author he recently discovered. That author is later revealed to be Austin. Even later that evening, Julian receives the results of the DNA test. They are not shared with the audience.
Austin Finale Review
A decently fulfilling final. It left the show in a place where it could just as easily continue as it could end. I wouldn’t mind seeing another series but wouldn’t be hurt if it got canceled. The really only likable yet totally unrelated character I enjoyed was Bill. I was sure that Austin would end up romantically pursuing Billie, and that could still be the case. With that in mind, I do feel a relationship with Lucy would bring much more to the series. Not only is she of color, but she’s a writer, brash, and very outspoken. That could make for some interesting future content. The finale deserves a 5.1 out of 10.
