Apples Never Fall Season 1 Episode 7 Recap
Why – The finale opens 14 days earlier with Joy Delaney (Annette Bening) suffering a leg injury during a bike crash. Getting to her feet, she sees a pothole responsible for her accident. After removing her bike to a safe location, she calls each of her children and Stan Delaney (Sam Neill) to no avail. Wrapping a sweatshirt around her injured knee, she walks away without her bike.
Upon returning home, Joy tosses the bloody sweatshirt in the waste bin but it falls on the ground where a stray dog takes it. She finds a copy of Harry Haddad’s autobiography on the table. While Stan’s podcast is live, he and Joy discuss Harry’s cheating confession. He admits to always knowing Harry was cheating. She accuses him of defending Harry against Troy Delaney (Jake Lacy) because Harry was supposed to be his “prodigy.” She claims to have sacrificed everything to make him look good. He says she betrayed him and cheated on him before grabbing his keys. When she refuses to let him pass, he empties the trophies on the floor. He tries to force his way past her when she hits him in the face. He walks away. The podcast captures everything. She receives texts with excuses as to why her children cannot join her for brunch tomorrow. She tosses her phone in the laundry basket before walking to a local pub where she makes a call. A short time later, Savannah Pagonis (Georgia Flood) arrives. Joy grills her for answers
Savannah admits to being a low-level con artist and taking a bribe from Troy to leave. She claims her time with Joy was the happiest of her life. Joy goes with Savannah to a remote location in Georgia.
In the present at a local jail, Tyler Cruz (Quentin Plair) warns Stan that he is facing a death penalty or life in prison for first-degree murder. He says a dive team is being assembled to search for the bag. Stan believes his children think he murdered Joy. Cruz tries to assure him that they love him. Stan claims to not care about his well-being if Joy is gone.
11 Days Earlier – Savannah and Joy arrive at the cabin. Refusing to call her family, Joy says they need to miss her for once. Later, Savannah cuts the landline.
In the present, Troy, Brooke Delaney (Essie Randles), Amy Delaney (Alison Brie), and Logan Delaney (Conor Merrigan Turner) find her parent’s house spotless.
10 Days Earlier – Joy tells Savannah that she and Stan are broken. Elsewhere, Brooke, Amy, Troy, and Logan are looking through their family photos. They see photos of only Stan which Amy contributes to Joy being the photographer. She says no one ever tried to capture Joy’s moment. Looking at a family photo, Brooke claims to have promised herself to be like them when she grew up. With Gina Scolis (Paula Andrea Placido) out of the picture, she has no place to live. Logan informs them of his decision to go live with Indira in Seattle and offers Brooke his houseboat. Amy supports his decision. They find a photo of Harry, his mother, and Savannah.
6 Days Earlier – Joy and Savannah pull weeds from the flower garden when a neighbor, William (Robert Taylor) approaches. He tells them that Maggie’s has karaoke tonight. Joy identifies herself as Diane.
In the present, Logan, Brook, Troy, and Amy watch Harry play tennis. Brooke shows him the photo from Joy’s album. Harry identifies the girl as Lindsey, not Savannah. He says the Delaney house was a refuge from his unstable, disabled mother. He says Lindsey was left with the responsibility of caring for their mother when he and his father left. He claims Lindsey threatened to kill his family when he stopped giving her money. He gave her $500k when he retired.
4 Days Earlier At Maggie’s – Joy is on the stage when Savannah checks her phone to see the Delaney family’s campaign to bring her home. Joy second-guesses her recent actions. Savannah assures her that she did nothing wrong. Seeing a falling star, Joy makes a wish that she refuses to share with Savannah. The next morning, Savannah finds Joy and William talking on the porch. Upon leaving, he invites Joy out to dinner. She tells him that she is married and lives in West Palm Beach, Florida. He suggests she fled the hurricane. Joy tries to call her phone only to find the landline dead. Savannah reminds her of how badly her family treated her. Joy says it is time to go home. Savannah leaves her packing while she goes to gas up the car.
In the present, Elana Camacho (Jeanine Serralles) and Ethan Remy (Dylan Thuraisingham) question why Stan hired a dive team to find the bag with Harry’s trophies.
Back at the cabin in Georgia, Joy searches for something to put her clothes in for the trip home. She finds a roll of cash, a handgun in Savannah’s bag, multiple IDs, and Harry’s restraining order against Lindsey Haddad. She puts everything away before Savannah walks into the house. En route to Florida, Savannah knows Joy knows she is Lindsey. She blames Joy for being left to take care of her mother who was “poison.” Savannah admits to her plan to destroy the Delaney family and speeds up. Joy apologizes as the car collides with something. A short time later, Savannah tells an unconscious Joy that she forgives her before fleeing the scene on foot. In jail, Stan learns about Joy as she is dropped off at their house. Troy, Logan, Brooke, and Amy greet her with an embrace. Joy informs them that Savannah is on the run when Stan arrives home. Embracing her, he thanks God that she is home. She questions who would believe he killed her. Turning to look at his children, he says they did. Brooke explains what they have been going through since her disappearance.
Joy claims to have left because Stan got to do it and she was hurt because they shut her out of their lives. She says Savannah answered her call for help when they refused to. She apologizes for not telling them that she reported Harry for cheating. Amy says they were lost. Later, Stan asks Joy if she wants a divorce. He tells her when he left home, he would go nowhere. He admits to lying about his father dying when he was young. He describes his father as a “violent coward” which is why he came to the United States. He professes to love her before pleading with her to stay.
Logan apologizes to Stan for the way they treated him. Stan vows to do better and embraces Troy. Joy is surprised to find her children still there. Assessing the damage from the hurricane, she insists on everyone pitching in to clean up the debris. The episode ends.
Apples Never Fall Review
The series is filled with noticeable flaws. The manner in which the hurricane plays out is ridiculous. Troy attends a party while at the Delaney house, his ill-prepared family is caught off guard when the power goes off. The aftermath is a downed palm tree, branches, and other debris but the lawn furniture remains upright.
The collision is the worst. A split second shows the airbag still intact. Savannah and Joy come out unscathed with no hair out of place. Another vehicle, no victims, at least not in the scene.
Their concern for Joy seems insincere. The lackadaisical investigation is laughable. The detectives are too busy pointing the finger and judging the Delaneys to search for Joy. The only investigative work is the sudden appeal to forensics for a fingerprint analysis on the knives
Savannah on the run is opening for a second season which will depend on audience viewership. The series portrays elitists as self-centered, conceited, unmotivated, obnoxious dimwits.
