As the 3rd episode of Adult Material begins, we jump forward 9 months and Hayley Burrows (Hayley Squires) has left the porn industry. We soon find out that she is working at Coffee & Me. Her co-worker Denise (Michelle Greenidge) notices her scratching her arms and asks if she has scabies. Hayley says she doesn’t but she does have a bit of a medical issue. She claims it is cystitis and that she has been urinating blood. Denise wants her to work either way so Hayley asks about her shifts for the following week since the clinic has bookable appointments. Denise won’t tell her if she’ll end up getting 35 hours. Later that night, Hayley reads paperwork relating to her defamation case as Amy walks through the door.

She asks Amy (Siena Kelly) about being nominated for best newcomer at the SHAFTAS. Amy admits she doesn’t think she is going to win and Hayley thanks her for doing the ironing. When Amy heads upstairs, Hayley checks her phone and watches a video about Stella Maitland (Kerry Godliman) starting a new campaign. Stella tells the media that rape cases are collapsing because of disclosure failings. Hayley suggests going on I Am A Celebrity if she is that desperate for attention. She goes to sleep and wakes up after having a nightmare. Stella knocks on the door and asks Hayley about the direct message she sent her. Stella shows her the direct message and says she was worried about her. Hayley explains that she had a few glasses of wine.

They go back and forth before Stella asks her about the upcoming defamation trial and Hayley planning on defending herself. Stella believes she might be able to help her. Hayley admits it is bad since she has little evidence and none of her witnesses want to cooperate with her. In addition to that, she has remortgaged the house and won’t be able to pay Stella for her assistance. She says she wouldn’t put herself through this if she wasn’t telling the truth. Stella warns her that they better win before Hayley kisses her on the lips. Stella says that did nothing for her before they head inside and begin working on the case. Stella says they need to find one thing that clearly proves that Carroll failed to protect his performers.

She also wants to get an expert medical witness to cover the anal prolapse situation. She wants to know if it constitutes Grievous Bodily Harm but Hayley warns her that Amy says it was consensual. Stella explains that not everyone has a choice but some people do. Hayley pulls out all of the evidence and tells her about the videotape of the footage that they shot that day. That tape has disappeared. They discuss having Amy testify before Stella says she can’t understand why Hayley would do all of this for a girl who doesn’t even want her to do it. Hayley admits she feels responsible because she left her on set. She says she doesn’t like being called a liar before telling Stella she’ll give her a spare key and she can have anything in the fridge except for the sausages because they’re on the turn.

Moments later, Tom Pain (Julian Ovenden) meets with Amy and they have intercourse in Amy’s vehicle in the parking lot. Amy grabs a bag of drugs but Tom doesn’t want her to use drugs because he wants to be with a woman who is present. He warns her that she has money right now but might not when her drug use turns into a habit. When Hayley returns home, Stella tells her that Nadia has submitted a statement and she is Dave Majors’ assistant. Hayley is surprised to learn that Nadia is claiming she sexually harassed her but Hayley says it was only a compliment. It continues until Hayley admits she used a finger on the woman. The following day, Stella says they should go softly and give her anything she wants.

Hayley asks if Stella is worried about working with her since people might think she is a dirty bird. Stella refuses to tell her what type of porn she was watching before saying we’re not what we want. She says they are what they do to get what they want. Lewis Carroll loved little girls but he never acted on that. Nadia (Callie Cooke) arrives moments later and Stella tells her that Hayley would like to apologize for what she did. Nadia confirms that she was on set on the day of the rosebud. She says Amy was fine and wanted to continue before being asked how she was asked if she wanted to stop. Nadia doesn’t want to answer that question so Hayley accuses her of taking money.

Stella tells her that they think problems occurred that day and they need access to that tape. Hayley does her best to apologize to Nadia but her apology only leads to an argument between the two. After Hayley storms off, we see a video of Izzy (Anya McKenna-Bruce) showing off her mega haul. She gets a call from Amy who lets her know she is coming in. Meanwhile, Hayley tells Stella that she wouldn’t give Nadia what she wanted because she isn’t a liar. Stella asks if she has done any financial planning because she might owe 100,000 pounds in costs if she loses. Amy goes to Izzy and asks her for the money she gave her when they went out for the weekend and spend a hundred quid on her. Izzy says she doesn’t remember that. Tom enters and interrupts. Izzy tells Amy that she doesn’t have the money.

Stella and Hayley enter and Amy tries to escape without Tom being noticed but that doesn’t happen. She can’t believe her friend has been hanging out with Tom and she begins hugging Izzy. Tom steps outside while Hayley tells Amy that she needs to get her belongings and get out of her house. Stella tries to calm her down before asking what Tom did to her. They sit outside and Hayley tells Stella that Carroll sent her over to LA approximately 10 years ago. She books a really big shoot on the last day and got a call saying Tom wanted to meet her the day before the shoot. Hayley went to his house and found two women there. She waited about 45 minutes before the women left and Tom came downstairs.

Tom was friendly and offered her a drink. He immediately begins offering to do sexual things to Hayley before ordering her to bend over the chair. Hayley said part of her was saying this awkward and the other part wondered how much he’d hurt her if she tried to get him off of her. She contemplating running to the house next door before Tom got behind her and put his hand around her mouth. He told her he was going to screw her to death and Hayley says it seemed real at the time and she couldn’t breathe. Everything went blurry before Tom said he didn’t know why they sent her because she is too old for the part and the part had already been filled. Hayley explains she was pulled from the shoot because she had bruises all over her face.

She admits she never told Rich (Joe Dempsie) but did tell Caroll Quinn (Rupert Everett). Hayley thought Carroll would never let that man near her again. Stella suggests submitting her statement as evidence and that it was rape but Hayley doesn’t want to do that. After that, Hayley goes to the doctor, submits a urine sample, and tells the doctor it feels like knives when she urinates. He confirms she is dealing with an infection now before giving recommendations. Blood samples are taken. Meanwhile, Carroll gets a check-up as well. The nurse tells him that his viral load is still undetectable and she’ll see him next month. Amy goes to the SHAFTAS and does drugs in the bathroom. She hangs out with Tom and Carroll during the party.

Tom tells Carroll he feels nervous to even hug a woman and he wonders where all of this is going to end. Carroll heads to the bathroom and runs into Sabelle (Timmika Ramsay) who says she had a rough day because she was shooting with Tom Pain and she is trying to cover up bruises on her neck. She finds it funny that Carroll is never around when Tom is shooting a film. She says just because he doesn’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Carroll hangs out alone before Hayley learns that she likely has cirrhosis of the liver. He warns her that she is dealing with a serious condition that they cannot treat. They can manage it and she’ll need to reduce her drinking. She leaves and immediately begins chugging alcohol.

She returns to work drunk before Denise tells her that she’ll need her for an evening shift later. Denise tells her that she can’t depend on her and some customers only come in to look at her breasts. She also knows about the bottle Hayley has stuffed down her pants. A boy snaps a picture of Hayley from nearby. Then, she returns home and learns that Izzy lost her receipts after borrowing money. Hayley complains a bit about Izzy’s father before stepping inside and finding Abby (Mandeep Dhillon) working with Stella. Hayley learns about Abby helping her and Stella being her boss. She believes Stella abused her power and took advantage of Abby. Stella finds Hayley outside and tells her that they need to use the information about Tom Pain. She explains it is more about Hayley instead of Amy and Carroll using a performer who abused her is a big case.

Stella says it was rape but Hayley insists it was a bad audition. Then, Stella says she wants the judge to see a good hard-working family woman so she would like Phoebe to be at the trial. Phoebe (Alex Jarrett) gets a call from her mother but she doesn’t answer it. Hayley checks Rich’s social media account and finds out that he has gotten into a new relationship with Kelly Sutton. She meets with him at the school and he tells her that it is already down because she is more than 40 minutes later. He explains everything that Mr. Gibbons said. She requests to see Gabe but Rich says that it is up to him and he can’t force Gabe to see her. She complains about him being lazy before he gets into a company vehicle and leaving. Hayley gets sick and vomits.

Moments later, Carroll visits Silje (Karina Beuthe Orr) with Hazewire. Carroll is confident that Hayley won’t be able to beat them and he is worried that she will bankrupt herself in the process. He suggests letting is go and dropping the case but that would make people believe Hayley was telling the truth and it could lead to the loss of investors. Silje tells him that removing himself from the suit would make him guilty of everything Hayley said and Hazewire would no longer be able to work with him. They chat about how the company uses its users’ data before Carroll says he is a respectable person. After that, we watch Tom film a movie before he helps Amy dry her hair. Tom gets upset when Amy snorts drugs behind his back so he suggests cooling it a little.

He believes they’re in different places right now and he is much older than Amy but she doesn’t want to give up on their relationship just yet. He says he was trying to be human about this but it is getting boring now. That night, Izzy cares for herself until her mother returns home and lies about what Mr. Gibbons said. Izzy is sent to bed before Hayley calls Stella to tell her how grateful she is for everything she has been doing for her but she can’t do it anymore. She says Carroll is her mate and she wants to close the door on it right now. Stella doesn’t get the message so she returns the call and tells Hayley that Nadia has gotten the tape for them. They prepare to meet with Nadia the following day but Stella says it isn’t worth going inside unless Hayley will give her what she wants.

Stella explains that she wants a proper apology and 3,000 pounds. Stella says it isn’t her problem before Hayley leans over and gives her a kiss. Stella says they need boundaries and Hayley does nothing for her but she doesn’t believe that. They go inside and Nadia grabs her phone so she can record Hayley’s apology. Hayley says her father left when she was six and never had much to do with him. Her mother worked all of the time and often self medicated. She ended up hanging out with the pot-smoking kids as long as she would give one of them a BJ each night. She admits to doing that for a few years before finally apologizing to Nadia and admitting it was screwed up. She says she has different opinions about certain things than normal people and she doesn’t know how to do that but she is trying.

Stella gives Nadia the money, Nadia gives them the tape, and they learn that the password is BangCherry69. Carroll finds Izzy walking down the street so he stops and asks her about missing the bus. He learns about Izzy needing money and he refuses to let her smoke a cigarette. He lets her play with it though. Caroll gives Izzy the money she needs and tells her not to tell Hayley about it. Seconds later, we join Julie (Faith Edwards) and Mike (Kenny Blyth). Amy returns to their house before Mike asks her what she wants. She says nothing and that she missed them before saying she was thinking about moving back in. Her parents aren’t ready for that though. She pretends it is fine and says she is going to use the bathroom but instead steals jewelry from the family. Then, Stella and Hayley prepare to watch Dr. Simon’s Violation Tape. Izzy returns so they close the computer and Hayley offers to give her the money she needed but she doesn’t anymore. She makes her daughter tell her where the money came from.

We jump over to Carroll who is trying to write a memoir. Hayley visits him, attacks him, and threatens to cuck his penis off if he doesn’t stay away from her. When Hayley returns home, she finds Amy with Stella and Abby. She apologizes to Hayley, says she was confused, and admits she broke up with Tom now. She tries to give Hayley the jewelry she stole from her family. Hayley tells her she wants to see exactly what she is before grabbing the computer and telling her to play the tape as the episode begins.

 

Adult Material Review

While not perfect by any means, I think this was a pretty good episode of Adult Material. The show is a bit over the top and outlandish but I also found this episode depressing. Although I am not sure it is a perfect representation of the porn industry, I could see something like this happening or at least something similar. All film industries have dirty secrets and I’d assume the porn industry is the worst of the bunch.

I am enjoying the relationship between Hayley and Stella and I am eager to see what is going to happen next. I can’t wait to finally get to watch the full rosebud tape so we can see what actually happened. I could see it going two ways. Hayley will find something that makes her resent Carroll and he’ll push forward with the defamation suit or she’ll find nothing and let it go.
