A Town Called Malice Series 1 Episode 2 Recap

The episode opens with Cindy Carter/Cindy Smith (Tahirah Sharif) frantically waking up after a nightmare of Uncle Tony (Dougray Scott) getting shot.

Uncle Tony and Ernesto Alvarez’s (Ramiro Blas) bodies are rolled out on a stretcher and placed into an ambulance. Jose (Manu Imizcoz) suggests a blood trail belongs to someone who got away. Detective Alfonso (Bruno Sevilla) admits to liking the idea of death in Costa before entering the crime scene.

Gene Lord (Jack Rowan) questions why Uncle Tony took a gun to their meeting with Ernesto. Cindy describes him as a “showman.” He tells her that they have nothing but property deeds.  She assures him that none of it was his fault. He suggests they go to the police. She says they should law low when the police knock on the door.

Alfonso asks if Uncle Tony ever mentioned Ernesto. Cindy says, “No.” When he addresses the same question to Gene, he doesn’t respond. Cindy claims Uncle Tony invited them over to discuss their stress testing some properties for him. Alfonso asks if they have an alibi. She says not any longer. He asks them to stay in town. After the police leave, Gene suggests leaving after they sell the property. Luuk (Coen Brill) and Metin (Yassine Fadel) are in a vehicle outside the house.

Gene tells Cindy that Uncle Tony and Ernesto’s property should be worth 50,000 pounds. She suggests informing Albert Lord (Jason Flemyng) of what happened. He suggests it will devastate Albert.

The Lord family is watching “Family Fortunes” when the phone rings. Gene informs him of Uncle Tony’s death. Albert ends the call without speaking.

Albert, Mint Ma Lord (Martha Plimpton), Carly Lord (Eliza Butterworth), and Leonard “Len” Lord (Lex Shrapnel) arrive in Costa del Sol. Len tells Gene that Kelly Lord (Daniel Sharman) is laid up with his arm. Mint Ma suggests Albert drive Uncle Tony’s car because it’s his now.

Mint Ma is in awe at Uncle Tony’s home. Gene tells Cindy to not tell his family about the property deeds. Mint Ma tells Albert that Uncle Tony’s assets will put them back in the game.

Albert asks for a memory of Uncle Tony that will stay with him. Gene says he was an amazing singer. Albert asks Gene to hold him. Gene awkwardly hugs him when Len approaches wearing Uncle Tony’s hat. Albert angrily orders him to take it off.

Mint Ma claims Uncle Tony was always coming on to her. Cindy assures her that Gene had nothing to do with what’s going on. Mint Ma describes her as a “survivor.” Len tells Gene that rumors going around in London about him at the scrapyard. He says they’re calling him the new “Ronnie Biggs.”  Luuk and Metin decide to come back for the property deeds after they get hammered.

Alfonso informs Cindy of Ernesto surviving a gunshot wound to the chest. She says that is wonderful. He says Ernesto’s story should explain what happened.

Cindy suggests she try to offer Ernesto a land deal. Gene assures her that he’ll never agree to a deal with them. She warns Ernesto will blame them for killing Uncle Tony. He agrees to her plan.

Alfonso asks Ernesto to move his finger if Gene and Cindy were with Uncle Tony at Escobells. Ernesto raises his finger after Alfonso leaves the room.

Cindy leaves Uncle Tony’s wake to visit Ernesto in the hospital. Cesar Cabrol (Marcelo Converti) introduces himself to the Lord family as the Mayor. Mint Ma sings a song in Uncle Tony’s honor. Cindy offers Ernesto a deal. He says “murderer” before grabbing her throat. While frantically suffocating him with a pillow, she has flashbacks. Her earring lies on the floor underneath his bed as she makes her exit.

Len says someone took Uncle Tony’s head off. Gene claims Cindy wanted to be alone with Uncle Tony. The Priest (Jose Luis de Madariaga) greets Alfonzo as he enters the church. Alfonzo leaves after seeing Cindy sitting on a pew. Gene asks if Ernesto accepted their deal. She says there was no other option. He asks what happened before realizing her earring is missing. Albert gives a speech about him and Uncle Tony growing up poor.

Gene walks in as Albert and Mint Ma are packing up Uncle Tony’s assets. Gene says Uncle Tony wasn’t wealthy but a singer at Club Paradiso. The real owner lives in Monaco. Mint Ma slaps the property deeds out of his hand. Irate, Albert demands to know why he waited so long to tell them before asking if he is satisfied.

Mint Ma pleads with Gene to come back to Bermo with them. She assures him that Cindy will land on her own two feet.

After meeting with Emilio Suarez (Ernesto Collado), Gene and Cindy realize they need Mayor Cabrol on their side. Luuk has Albert and Mint Ma at gunpoint when they enter the house. He claims Uncle Tony scammed them out of two million pesetas for a beach. Albert asks what beach. Mint Ma says kill them or “f**k off” when Metin backhands her. Len punches Metin and Albert hits Luuk. After firing a shot into the ceiling, Mint Ma orders them to get rid of them. Once they’re gone, the Lord family looks for the property deeds.

Mint Ma is looking through Cindy’s bag when she finds a postcard from Eddie Carter/Eddie Smith (Josh Tedeku). She believes Eddie is Cindy’s other man. Len pops open a desk drawer and the property deeds fall to the floor. She describes the property as a “gold mind.” Albert professes his love for Gene before celebrating their find.

Cindy suggests Gene return to London with his family. Gene shakes his head no.

Albert has a flashback of having a lavish dinner with his family. Back to the present, Mint Ma admits to being proud of him before describing him as a “leader.”

Club Paradiso – The Lord family hit the dance floor. Mint Ma calls Kelly to tell him that she suspects Cindy already has a man. Kelly assures her that Cindy was never right for him. She orders him to find out more about her man. DI Lindsay (Leanne Best) is recording their conversation.

Gene tells Cindy that no one has ever done as much for him as she has. He says they’re going to build this dream together. Alfonso arrests him for conspiracy to murder Ernesto. She watches as the police cruiser drives away with Gene. The episode ends.

 

A Town Called Malice Review

The Lord family travel to Costa del Sol to settle Uncle Tony’s estate. Gene waits until after the wake to inform him of Uncle Tony being broke. Albert is irate until he discovers the property deeds.

Detective Alfonso investigates Escobells murders. When Gene and Cindy discover Ernesto is still alone, she visits him in the hospital. Instead of accepting their offer of a land deal, he tries to kill her. During the struggle, she loses her earring. She suffocates him with a pillow.

Luuk and Metin fail to recover Uncle Tony’s 20,000-pound debt from the Lord family. Cindy and Gene’s plans to finish his hotel plan goes up in smoke with Albert finds the property deeds. During the search, Mint Ma finds a postcard from Eddie in Cindy’s bag. She believes they’re romantically involved.

The family celebrates at Club Paradiso when Gene is arrested for conspiracy to kill Ernesto.

The script is cleverly written with the occasional ha-ha funny one-liner. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. The show’s best feature is its 80s soundtrack. Each song brought back wonderful memories from my teenage years.
