As the episode begins, Claire Wilson (Kate Mara) tells Matt (Ashley Zukerman) that she is having an affair. She confesses she has been sleeping with one of her students. Matt doesn’t say much. Then, we see Sandy (Rya Kihlstedt) feeding her kids until Eric Walker (Nick Robinson) enters and asks his mom if she has seen his phone. The doorbell rings and Eric decides to answer the door. Detectives Janice (Kim Faires) and Rick (Rob Hay) are there to question him about his relationship with Claire. Eric tells them that Claire is a good teacher and helped raise his SATs. He is asked if he has ever met with Claire after school and he admits she tutors him. Eric does his best to keep their secret. Janice explains that the school was notified this morning and a report was filed.
They know about the relationship and the vacation they took together. They tell Eric that the most important thing right now is telling the truth and that lying isn’t going to help Claire. Matt tells Nate (Adam David Thompson) about Claire’s affair. Nate tells him that he went through a rough patch with Lisa too but they saw somebody. Matt interrupts and reveals that she was sleeping with one of her students. Nate is surprised to learn that Claire told him that. Matt admits Claire told another teacher about it too. Nate believes they won’t press charges if Eric says it was consensual. Matt wonders what he should do before Claire receives a call from Eric who wants to meet. Eric admits he didn’t know what to do because the detectives said they knew about everything.
Claire doesn’t want to meet and hangs up the phone a few moments later. Logan Davis (Shane Harper) returns home and hears his mother telling someone that Bill has already called the DA. When the call ends, she asks Logan if he knows what has been going on with Eric. At this point, Logan learns about Eric’s relationship with Claire. Claire stays in bed until Matt returns home and checks on her. He tells her he wants to save what they have but Claire doesn’t understand how he can even look at her. He says he loves her and she did screw up. He reminds her that they’ve been working on their relationship for 10 years. He tells her he doesn’t want to lose her before telling her he told Nate about it. Matt explains that they can get a lawyer and get into therapy.
Matt believes they’ll be able to get past this. Logan and Josh (Dylan Schmid) meet with Eric so they can ask him about his relationship. Logan believes Eric is going to be a legend but he doesn’t want to hear that. Eric is worried about Claire but Logan reminds him she is an adult. Josh can’t understand it since Claire has a husband. Meanwhile, Matt tells Claire that he is going to take a few days off work. Claire decides to take a walk. She steps outside and tries to recollect herself. Then, she gets into her vehicle and meets with Eric moments later. Claire drives them to a private spot and Eric begins apologizing. He admits he should’ve lied to the detectives. Claire says she is scared. Eric suggests just driving and leaving everything behind.
Claire says she can’t be with him and that would be crazy but Eric thinks they can figure it out. He reminds her that he loves her and they kiss. They go to a motel and Claire gets a call from Nate. He wants to know where she is and he tells her that everyone is worried about her. Then, Claire is warned that she could be accused of kidnapping. When the call ends, Claire joins Eric in the motel room. They drink alcohol and have sex again. Later that night, Eric gets up and goes to the bathroom while Claire sleeps. He checks his phone and finds a lot of missed calls from his mother, Josh, and Logan. Then, he finds messages calling him a legend. Claire gets up and calls for Eric. She looks around and finds that Eric is gone. Seconds later, Eric returns to his mother.
Eric gets into bed and cries while Claire drives to the police station. She goes inside before the episode ends.
A Teacher Review
This was somewhat of a wasted episode of A Teacher, wasn’t it? I appreciate that they gave the characters one last night together but it should’ve happened much quicker. They should’ve sped it up a lot so we could’ve seen more of the aftermath of Claire’s revelation. I don’t know but it feels like the time could’ve been better spent.
Still, it wasn’t a bad episode and it finally drove a wedge between Claire and Eric. Things are likely going to get much worse for Claire in future episodes. It’ll be interesting to see how bad it gets. This episode scores a 7 out of 10. You can find previous recaps of A Teacher on Reel Mockery.
