A Discovery Of Witches Series 1 Episode 4 Recap

satu discovery of witches

At the beginning of the episode, Matthew (Matthew Goode) and Diana (Teresa Palmer) travel together. Matthew’s mother, Ysabeau (Lindsay Duncan), is expecting them. She watches the car arrive outside of her home. Diana is introduced to her right away. Ysabeau seems very standoffish. She ridicules Diana’s education. Marthe (Sorcha Cusack) arrives. She is much kinder towards Diana. Matthew tells Marthe that Diana will be sleeping in his tower. In the tower, Matthew and Diana speak about his step-father’s death. He was killed in War World II. Marcus (Edward Bluemel) and Miriam (Aiysha Hart) chat on the phone about their safe arrival. Marcus is surprised to find Juliette (Elarica Johnson) in his room. Juliette wants to know where Matthew is. She explains that Gerbert (Trevor Eve) will be very angry with her if he doesn’t tell her about the witch.

Marcus really doesn’t care. He tells Juliette that Matthew never thinks of her. Juliette attacks him. Miriam arrives and they manage to stop her. Juliette leaves after a brief scuffle. Matthew’s mother tells him that she doesn’t want Philippe’s office open while Diana is there. She eventually relents, but reminds Matthew that Diana’s kind killed Philippe. She is concerned about what Matthew might be exposing them to. Diana sleeps. She imagines seeing her mother by the window. She wakes up in a panic moments later. Diana receives a call from Emily (Valarie Pettiford) and Sarah (Alex Kingston). She tells them about Peter Knox threatening her. They tell Diana that she needs to get out of there now. Matthew’s mother is a witch killer who has destroyed many covenants over the years.

Peter Knox (Owen Teale) and Satu (Malin Buska) chat at the Congregation. Satu is told about Agatha Wilson (Tanya Moodie) as she arrives. Peter claims that they’re going to need Agatha’s support. Agatha ridicules the lack of diversity among the vampires. Baldwin Montclair (Trystan Gravelle) tries to shut her up. They put their amulets together to create keys and unlock the door to the chamber. Matthew scours over the pictures of Diana’s parents. He notices something strange in one of them. He says Merde as he looks at the shoe on the ground. He adjusts the color and it appears that the bodies are sitting inside of a circle. The Congregation begins their meeting. Peter begins talking about Matthew breaking the rules. He accuses Matthew of abducting a witch.

Matthew and Diana tour the house. They speak about Philippe and Ysabeau. Diana knows about the witches working with Nazis and playing a part in Philippe’s death. Matthew insists that it has nothing to do with her. She understands that it does for his mother. Marcus wants to know about his results. Miriam doesn’t want to deliver the results without a second opinion from Matthew. Marcus pleads with her to reveal the results. He is told that there are markers that have shown up in other failed sirings. Baldwin calls them. He wants to know what Matthew is doing with Diana. Baldwin demands to know where Matthew is. Meanwhile, Matthew and Diana go horseback riding. Marthe tells Ysabeau that she hasn’t smelled such power in centuries. Diana and Matthew race their horses.

Peter tries to convince the Congregation that Matthew has stalked and abducted Diana. Agatha isn’t convinced. Baldwin mentions Diana finding the Book of Life. The others turn on Peter. Baldwin confirms that Matthew has Diana. He will send a Congregation representative and Diana will be handed over for investigation. Diana contemplates going home. She tells Matthew that she doesn’t want him to feel responsible for her. She realizes that she must face Knox at some point. Matthew tells her that the photographs of her parents were staged. He explains that there was a chalk circle under the debris. It was a witch’s circle. Diana’s parents were killed by witches. She walks away.

Satu asks Peter why he didn’t tell her that he tested Diana as a child. Peter manages to take complete control over Satu. He makes sure that she knows who is in control. He lets her free and tells her that they need to work together to protect themselves from humans and other creatures. Satu agrees, but she does not seem happy. Agatha speaks with Nathaniel (Daniel Ezra) about Sophie (Aisling Loftus). Soon, she chats with Sophie. She asks her about the statue and its link to alchemy. Sophie explains she needs to give it to a woman in a castle with seven towers. She claims that the woman is with her dark king. She dreams about them. Agatha tells her not to talk to anyone about the subject. Agatha admits she might know who the woman is. Agatha explains that the girl is in trouble with the Congregation.

Diana bathes and rethinks everything. Matthew speaks with his mother about Diana’s parents. He encourages her to at least try. Baldwin tells Gerbert that he is convinced Matthew will bring the book to him. Gerbert believes that Matthew’s behavior is weakening the vampire’s rule. He suggests Baldwin and his family are losing their grip. Diana speaks with Matthew’s mother. Diana asks how Philippe died. Diana explains she is willing to make up her own mind despite the stories she has heard about Ysabeau. Diana admits she doesn’t know why her parents were killed. She is told to make the culprits pay. The family enjoys dinner together. It seems that Ysabeau is coming around to Diana a bit. Matthew and his mother speak about their old Christmas parties. Matthew starts the record player.

He dances with his mother. Then, he dances with Diana. Something happens. Diana’s skin begins to glow. Afterwards, Matthew tells her that it is the first time he actually saw her enjoy her magic. They begin making out. Gillian Chamberlain (Louise Brealey) finishes with the Covenant meeting at her home. She speaks with Sylvia about Diana going with Matthew. Gillian is told that Diana is capable of anything. Peter wants them to find out what Matthew was doing in Oxford. Dominico (Gregg Chillin) tracks down Diana and Matthew. Matthew’s mother arrives seconds later. Diana is told she will need to come in front of the Congregation for questioning. She is also told to hand over the Book of Life. Matthew refuses to let that happen. Dominico believes that Matthew has lost his mind. Diana is escorted away.

Matthew attacks Dominico and gives him a good scare. Matthew is told that they’ll hunt them down and kill them both. Matthew’s mother asks him about the book. She tells him to hand over Diana. Diana asks Marthe about the Covenant. She learns that interspecies relationships are forbidden. To date, it has never been broken. Matthew enters and claims there will be no more visits from the Congregation. He tells her that they will not break the Covenant. Diana claims that they’re bound together. Matthew tries to push her away. He gets a call and learns that someone broke into the lab. He tells Diana that she is not coming. He is going to let her stay at his place. His mother agrees to protect her. Diana tells Matthew that she loves him. He admits she knows how he feels, but he will not say it.

His mother tells her to let him go. Matthew drives away before Diana can catch up with him. She sobs and it begins to rain. Marthe and Ysabeau realize that Diana is causing it to rain.

A Discovery Of Witches Review

This episode of A Discovery of Witches was a little cheesy. Despite being a fable of such, the show has a very liberal slant to it. It doesn’t try to hide it in the least either. The writer wasn’t sure whether to keep things serious or not it seems. Nevertheless, the show itself is pretty good. Despite the lunacy of the story, the acting is very good. Matthew Goode is equally charming and creepy. His connection with Teresa Palmer is great and that really helps drive the story. The supporting cast is excellent too.

It seems like every episode unveils something new. This episode, we learned about the Covenant’s stance on interspecies relationships and we found out that Diana’s parents were killed by witches. The only potential problem is the number of characters. There are too many and that can create some confusion for a show that only lasts 40 some minutes. The episode was solid. It scores an 8 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of A Discovery of Witches right now.
