Tin Star Review

I don’t like Tin Star. If you do, you should probably stop here. This is not a personal attack on those that enjoy the show. Everyone is different. Now, I skipped forward through the finale, because it was anti-climatic and painfully slow. There was very little substance here. Jim tortured Frank and killed Whitey. Elizabeth used the information against Gagnon to quickly climb up the career ladder with North Stream.

With most of the main characters dead and Jim with no real nemesis, I am not sure why this series would be continued. There is really no story left to tell. It isn’t my cup of tea. I could go on and on as to why, but I won’t waste my time or yours. It scores a 4.5 out of 10. Catch up with past recaps of Tin Star now!

  1. Karl Hainer says:

“The only TV series that I enjoyed more than ‘Tin Star’ was Twin Peaks Season 3, which (for me) was the greatest thing that I have ever seen”.

  2. ReelMockery says:

Great. I am glad people like it. Gives the actors work. While I personally do not like it, I will continue recapping it. People might not like my opinion on the show, but they can still enjoy the recaps. I hope they prove to be beneficial for someone.

    Cheerio 🙂

  3. Wendy says:

I have to say I really liked the show. I was skeptical at first since I wasn’t a Tim Roth fan, but this series changed my mind. Tin Star has everything that a great crime series needs. Yeah it might have been a bit of a slow burner at first but it definitely kept me interested in the story line. The characters where really complexed and interesting, love the character Gagnon he was a trip and even felt sorry for Simon aka Whitey. Really looking forward to season 2. Not really sure what the story line will be, but if it’s anything like the first season count me in. 9 out of 10, would have said 10 out of 10 but that sounded a bit clique.

  4. Deborah says:

Loved Tin Star!! Not since True Detective have I been so hooked on a show, not sure how season 2 will work though if most loose ends appear to be tied up 🤔

  5. Jason says:

I absolutely agree with the recap: I’ve just finished Tin Star, plowing through hoping that it would at least pick up or tie up loose ends. It didn’t. I’m not even sure why Gagnon was even involved to start with, a vendetta against the chief before he even made his scathing comments. The oil company storyline was how it started but it all came to nothing. The whole Jim/Jack thing, is he like Jekyll and Hyde or what? People call him Jim/Jack and no one bats an eyelid as to why. What was Godswill’s reason for trying to kill Jim? The characters all seem to say that they are going to do something and then do the opposite. Jim’s wife one minute hates him for sleeping with another woman, then has six with him herself, and then hates him again. She hunts down Whitey with a shotgun, shoots him, hates him for killing her son, let’s him go with her gun and then look for him again, and then mourns his death. Anna has sex with Whitey then hates him for being a dick, founds out he killed her brother then loves him again. She even says herself: “you treat me like shit but I trust you”. WHAT? Didn’t alarm bells go off when he carried on driving with her past the town for hours on end? No inner function thought “oh hello I might be getting a ride from a kidnapper/murderer/rapist?” Elizabeth said she was going to help the Native woman, then doesn’t, and then does again. Whitey is first shown as a murdering pscycopath, then gangster leader, then tragic orphan, then aggressive gunman then tragic orphan again. This is the most unbelievable array of characters that don’t make believable or sensible decisions. Jim/Jack is a total arsehole from start to finish and doesn’t give a shit about the town or its residents, and frankly his wife is just as bad. She asks him to “kill them all” and then kills someone herself and watches as he tortures an innocent bartender then makes out with him. Who is she Myra Hindley? And the biggest question of them all which I can’t believe no one has raised on the internet: HOW DID JIM NOT RECOGNISE WHITEY?? HE RAISED THE KID FOR MONTHS!!

    • ReelMockery says:

Thanks for the comment. Nice to know I am not the only one that didn’t like it. I questioned the same. I suppose the kid could’ve changed appearance slightly, but Jim wasn’t able to recognize Frank either. You’ve really got to step outside of reality to enjoy the show and even then, it is slow and a little unfathomable.

The cast could’ve put together something excellent. Sadly, the writing didn’t live up to the hype. Not bashing anyone that likes the show though. To each their own. Thanks again for stopping by and leaving your opinions 🙂

      • Pat Mustard says:

You definitely have to detach yourself from reality for this one. Of course Jim/Jack should recognise Whitey. And there’s no way he could have stayed in his job as police chief after all the goings in, never mind his drinking. It was also soooo slow to get going. But… the last 3 episodes really exploded with tension, drama and depth of character. Yes, the main characters were contradictory but that’s what made it interesting and unpredictable. Not a Breaking Bad or The Killing but gripping and ultimately enjoyable nonetheless. 7/10

  6. Chesterton says:

Another accurate review you’ve written. NIck is my favorite character still. But in this series, a cop who is honest and smart is portrayed as the bad guy. While the drunken chief of police is supposed to be the hero?
And the kid hitman who cries every single episode instead of killing who he’s supposed to. Just nonsense and boring.
By the way, this series set the world record for slow-motion close-up shots of glasses of whiskey being poured.

  7. Ken Barton says:

Best thing that could happen in Season 2 is for Gagnon to crawl out of his intended grave and continue you to give real depth to the ubiquitous “Bad Guy” role…

  8. Ken Barton says:

uuhhh. that would be “continue to give real depth to the ubiquitous “Bad Guy” role…sorry, typed to fast

  9. LT says:

Really enjoyed the show. I watch fiction for the escapism so more than happy to accept it being outside of reality. The Sherriff never saw Frank as ‘Jack’, that might be why he didn’t recognise him.

  10. Ed says:

I watched 10hours of this crap and still had no idea why whitey wanted to kill Jack. When I read an online recap, it made no sense whatsoever Really, when was it explained who these British guys were? It was the premise of the story and went unexplained

  11. David Caldwell says:

I thought it was rather comical in a weird sort of way. I found all the beatings, shootings and blood almost farcical. Also for a little guy Jack/ Jim was remarkably resilient to all the various injuries he sustained. I cannot imagine being beaten up by abikey gang for knocking over their bikes without sustaining permanent brain injury. Yet Jack/ Jim appears to recover from the beating overnight. Also anybody who drank as much as he did would most likely have cirrhosis of the liver and would be hung over for days on end. But not our automaton Jack/Jim! He just gets up as if he just as had a cup of tea!

  12. Michieux says:

I grew steadily more disappointed with each further episode. Did someone say ‘hackneyed’? Don’t lie to me!

A show so relentlessly, stupidly dark, right through to the bitter end, doesn’t rate a second season.

The real star here was Canada.

  13. Mike merchant says:

You people sound like my wife, I have to explain everything to her in movies that she cant keep up with or understand. I used to read books all the time and I used my imagination before my eye’s went bad. Same thing with this series, i guess they cld have explained all those little details to drag it out. The drinking issue made perfect sense to me, maybe i know to many functional alcaholics that are jekyll and Hyde. I liked it and hope there is another season.
This is my first post ever, on anything, dont even have face book. “So what do I know”

  14. Joanna Metcalf says:

    I thought it was genius
Horses for courses and all that
Makescme laugh athat all those that did ‘t watched all 10 episodes so that they could winge after
    Yawn

  15. Dave G says:

I thought it was okay, but it went off the rails towards the end. The problems were:

    1) Whitey starts off as a crazy psycho but morphs into a sad orphan way too easily. He wants to kill Jack so bad but makes zero effort to actually do so after episode 1.
    2) The other 2 cops are never around when anything is happening…would there really be zero other law enforcement around while all this is happening?
    3) It made no sense that the daughter chose Whitey over her parents. Also, the recapper didn’t seem to notice that Anna shot her dad right at the end before the screen goes black? C’mon, buddy.
    4) Anytime you kill off a innocent 5-yr-old in episode 1 of a show, that’s a hell of lot you have to come back from. A lot of people watching with little ones would be out after that happens. When something that tragic happens, what’s even at stake anymore? The worst has happened.
    5) So Jack went undercover and was nice to the family in England for a short time and then left. He wasn’t Whitey’s dad, Whitey needed to get over it.

    • Joni Gail says:

Jack was the only man that was even remotely nice to Whitey and he abandoned him. And whitey had to watch all those dogs starve to death and his mother slowly kill herself and you tell him get over it. Whitey ends up being the only one I liked. Jim was a total jerk with no redeeming qualities. I’d like to shoot him myself.

  16. Margaret says:

What a confusing story to say the least. was very disappointed in the series.

  17. MJJ says:

Episode 1 delivered. It left you wanting to know the “why” after the worst “what” that could have happened did.

Episode 2 delivered was supposed to go about the business of setting the stage for answering the “why”….but sadly it failed.

As for the rest…well if you watch 5 min at the start…middle…and end of each, then you will spend only about 2 hrs-ish and you will still understand everything. You will see the whiny kid cry alot and rage a little…but not really do much about the the source of his supposed pain. You will see the french version of the “x-files” smoking man…well…smoke (with a french accent l might add) and always magically be there to eavesdrop at percisely the right moment…but not do much else. You will see the yawnly typical teenager flip off the parental units in yawnly typical “l love him and l dont care” fashion. You will see countless glasses of whiskey poured…actually the only parts of the series that show any real depth.

The best part of this series were the accents…the Irish quips and sayings…and the sound of guns being loaded…all kinds of guns.

The end. I wish it was the actual end. I simply do not understand what is left to say…or not say as it were…in a second season? Rubbish. Complete rubbish.

    • ReelMockery says:

lol! Well put. I thought the opening scene was the best too. Built the hype and never really lived up to it. Really shocked it got a second season too. Sad so many superior shows have been canceled.

  18. Anthony says:

Watched the first episode…what a load of crap. Didn’t make sense and thankfully abanded it.
Much later out of curiosity watched the last episode…what a load of crap. Didn’t make sense and thankfully missed all the twaddle in between. To all those that liked it…well you have low parameters for any kind of realism or logic.
There I said it so sue me lol.

  19. Patricia A Rooney says:

I really liked this show … the acting and the music were GREAT!

  20. Annee Ramus says:

Excellent actors doing the best they could with the lines they were handed. Too many moments where suspension of belief was impossible. Tim Roth’s character was a drunk yet had more physical and mental bounceback than Thor. Ragged writing, poor plot lines, attempts at cleverness. But the Actors didn’t disappoint and saved it for me. Barely. Silly pseudo ending.

  21. James says:

Whoever wrote the final episode was a blithering fool. Or he thinks we are. Great build up to a putrid, mindless final scene. Too much focus in the second seasons storyline to do the first season justice. Yuck.
