Chapter Six: Apex – The finale begins with Mike Byrne (Chris Diamantopoulos) in complete hysteria due to the death of Bo (Jamie Lee Curtis).  He is worried about disposing of the body and getting out of town before Charlie (Mark O’Brien) and Boston show up while Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale) wants to continue with the original plan. Remy Bouchard (Guillaume Cyr), on the other hand, is concerned about his father, Maurice Bouchard (Michel Perron), and tomorrow’s harvest.

As Mike muscles Bo’s body to the garage and puts her in the deep freeze, Ruth tries to come up with a way that they can steal more syrup, faster. She not only comes up with a new daring plan but she gets Mike back on board.

Elsewhere at the warehouse, Leonard Gauthier Sr (Guy Nadon) tells Leo Gauthier (Mickael Gouin) that he was right and is announcing his retirement at the Harvest Party tonight. All he asks is that Leo let him complete the Visitor’s Center before taking over. Leo agrees.

Ruth is thrown for a huge loop when she goes to the hospital to say her final goodbye to Martin Landry (Joseph Bellerose). While she does so, Martin squeezes her hand. This causes Ruth to yell for Florence Russell (Vickie Papavs) who doesn’t believe her until Martin squeezes her hand as well. Despite all this, Florence tries to convince Ruth not to get her hopes up because, for someone in Martin’s condition, the squeezing could also be a sign of death. Ruth is almost unbelieving as she is rushed from the room.

Mike returns home to be confronted by Teddy Green (Gita Miller) and Detective Valerie Nadeau (Suzanne Clement) about Bo’s car being in his driveway yesterday and her being a known member of a crime family. Mike casually jokes that it was a good thing that he was gone but the officers do not find this too funny. The conversation doesn’t get much further before Green and Nadeau notice the freezer and decide to search it. Mike is sweating bullets the entire time and expects to be busted but much to his surprise, someone has already moved the body. They promise to return with a warrant and find more.

While Leo prepares for the big Harvest Day Party, Mike goes to the woods to retrieve a bat that can later be used as evidence. He is in the process of making his way to the tanker truck when he receives a call from Ruth, inquiring where he is. He tells her that he is taking care of business as usual. Several minutes later, he and Ruth are watching the last few farmers exit the warehouse as Remy stands guard. When the last farmers are gone, Mike is backing the cargo truck into the warehouse.

At the Harvest Day Party, Maurice introduces himself to Gary Montour (Meegwun Fairbrother) and asks about Remy. Gary tells him that Remy is finishing up at the warehouse but offers to call over. Maurice thanks him but turns down the offer. By this time, Mike has the truck in place. It’s only minutes later when they are tapping and suctioning the barrels.  Much to Remy’s surprise, his father shows up at the warehouse and catches them stealing the syrup. It takes him a few minutes, but he eventually puts two and two together. Although Maurice is clearly upset, he promises to stay quiet to keep Remy safe.

While that takes place, Leonard addresses the farmers at the Harvest Party about corruption in today’s system. Although he speaks for several minutes about the system, he ends up blaming it all on his son, Leo. This does not go at all as he intended because the farmers not only begin launching empty beer bottles at the stage but they begin making their way to the warehouse to take back their syrup. Although Mike and his crew have one tanker filled and are starting on the second, things are not going any better due to Remy’s concern about Mike attacking his father. Their confrontation leads to a brief fight that is interrupted by the mob of irate farmers closing in. Ruth buys them a few minutes by making a homemade Molotov cocktail and throwing it at Leo’s prized Visitor’s Center which catches fire and blows up.

While the Visitor’s Center burns, Remy decides to fill the rest of the tanker with the huge syrup container that the farmers donated to earlier. He also opens the bottom spout to make it look like someone left it open. At the same time, Green and Nadeau show up at Maurice’s house with a search warrant. Despite all the lucky breaks they’ve caught, Remy and Mike can’t put their distaste for one another behind them. This leads to another fight that is almost instantly broken up by the arrival of Gary. Gary recognizes Ruth from the woods and automatically assumes Remy caught her and Mike in the middle of stealing the syrup.

Gary eventually takes possession of Mike and is in the process of handcuffing him when Remy knocks him out from behind. With one cargo tank full and the other at 90%, Ruth, Remy, and Mike immediately begin erasing all traces of their existence and make their way out of the warehouse. Once they are on the road and appear to be free and clear, Ruth assumes they’ve got around $8 million in syrup.

Unfortunately, things are not going so well for Maurice when Don Leblanc (Tristan D Lalla) not only finds a bat in the back of Remy’s vehicle but also finds traces of blood. This discovery leads to Maurice taking responsibility for Orval Steeks’s (Jason Cavalier) death.

The episode ends with Ruth calling Florence to find out about Martin’s condition. As it turns out, he’s still in the coma but he is stable and there are no current signs of brain damage.

 

The Sticky Review

I figured that this was going to be a miniseries but I could easily see the series going for another season if it gets renewed. That said, I don’t possibly see how the second season would be as good as the first. First off, it’s not like the first season was gold, but the second season would have to be about the sale of the syrup and the fallout from Bo’s death.

Of course, there would be plenty of other interesting side stories like Leo and Leonard, Green and Nadeau, and Remy’s father, but I just don’t see season 2 holding my interest like season 1 did. Because there were so many cliffhangers, the finale felt unfulfilling, which would leave me giving it a meager 5.1 out of 10.
