Sold – The finale begins with Lydia (Lisa Kudrow) and Paul Morgan (Ray Romano) debating why there would be two different shell casings if Emily Morgan (Chloe East) only shot once. On top of that, they can’t understand why the casings are different. Despite their discovery, Paul is hesitant to open the autopsy while Lydia is all for it. Their differing opinions lead to a brief blow-up that ends with Lydia admitting that she can no longer live with Paul because of the way he has chosen to deal with Jacob Morgan’s (Wyatt Aubrey) death.
Carla Owens (Teyonah Parris) and Dennis Sampson (O-T Fagbenle) are in the hospital admiring their handiwork when an excited Denise Sampson (Anna Maria Horsford) shows up bearing gifts. What should be a happy occasion immediately turns heated the moment Dennis brings up Jimmy not being his biological father.
As soon as JD Campbell (Luke Wilson) steps foot in his home, he receives a call from his frantic ex-wife, Christine (Katie Walder), inquiring about Harper Campbell (Joni Reiss). At nearly the same time, Harper and Margo/Luann Starling (Linda Cardellini) are shown enjoying lattes in an expensive suite. JD calls just as frantic as Christine until he learns that he is on speaker phone. Once their conversation is private, JD tells her that Bobby Barnett (Rory Scovel) shared everything with him. He also tells her that Bobby is now in a better place and she will be too if she doesn’t return Harper home safely.
When Sarah Weber (Poppy Liu) stops by to check up on Carla, she plants seeds of doubt by telling her that she and Leslie Fisher (Abbi Jacobson) also bet on the Morgan house despite everything that happened there. As Carla’s curiosity peaks, Sarah tells her about the Citizen App.
Mikey Morgan (Denis Leary) arrives home from his visit with Nate Morgan (Kevin Alves) to find Paul asleep on his bed. There is a brief argument about Mikey ruining Paul’s marriage before Paul asks him about the bullet casing. Mikey claims that it was the casing that came from the kitchen floor. Paul doesn’t believe him and this leads to even more arguing before Mikey blames his relapsing on Paul not coming to visit him in prison. Much to Mikey’s surprise, Paul claims that he couldn’t bring himself to visit him in prison and admits to being an as*hole. Although Paul claims he has no other place to go, Mikey makes him leave because he supposedly has things that he needs to do.
Lydia is trying to enjoy a cup of coffee at home when Greg Boycelane (Matt Rogers) shows up to reveal that the Sampsons have pulled their offer due to rumors on the Citizen App. Although Lydia appears unfamiliar with the app, she assumes that it has to do with Jacob’s death. Greg doesn’t reveal more than this but as soon as he is gone, Lydia receives a call from the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office to inform her that her lawyer has already stopped by and collected Jacob’s autopsy report. This takes Lydia by complete surprise.
Things do not go at all as intended when Lydia unexpectedly shows up to confront Leslie about intruding on Jacob’s records. Leslie babbles and apologizes for several minutes before convincing Lydia that she was only trying to do the right thing. Matters only get more confused when Lydia freaks out after learning that Jacob was killed by a .40 caliber. Leslie asks her if there is anything she wants to share while also reminding her that she is now her lawyer.
While packing up some of Jacob’s belongings, Emily receives an unexpected visit from Margo and Harper. Things immediately get awkward when Emily answers the door and tells Harper to go to the fridge and get a drink. With Harper gone, Margo apologizes and tells Emily that JD is off his meds right now and she doesn’t want him around Harper. Before Emily can respond, Margo practically throws Harper on her and tells her that she will be back in 4 or 5 hours to pick her up.
Dennis and Carla are shopping for a new home at the hospital when Carla not so subtly approaches the situation with Denise. She tries to convince him that everyone lies by telling him about her hiding the fact that her father is a billionaire, womanizing man wh*re, who is now trying to get back in her life. This appears to be enough to convince him to reach out to his mother if Carla also reaches out to her father.
Paul returns home with a bouquet of flowers and a conviction to get Lydia back. Instead, he finds Emily but it is merely seconds before Lydia shows up to unveil the good news about Emily not killing Jacob. Harper interrupts the happy moment to announce to the Morgans that they are out of toilet paper.
Things do not turn out as Margo planned when she returns home to discover everything that JD learned from Bobby. He continues to mock her by telling her that regardless of the prenup, there is no money left for her to take. Much to his surprise, she says she wants the house in her name. He tells her over his dead body and says that she is going to tell him where Harper is right now. This time, it is her who mocks him by asking if he is going to hit her if she doesn’t blab. Before he has a chance to respond, Margo strikes herself and continues to do so repeatedly. She tells him that he has a nasty left hook and responds by saying that he never laid a hand on her. Despite JD pulling him out of the water and taking him to the hospital, Bobby shows up to back Margo’s story.
Back at the Morgan’s house, Emily, Paul, and Lydia are debating why Margo would show up out of nowhere and leave Harper with her. They don’t get long to debate it because JD abruptly shows up out of nowhere to collect Harper. He incorrectly assumes that the Morgan’s hostility has something to do with the offer falling through. Before the discussion becomes too X-rated, Paul tells Emily to take Harper up to her room. In passing, Lydia tells Harper that she can play Jacob’s keyboard. Harper claims that she doesn’t know how even though Jacob had supposedly been giving her lessons for over a year. This leads to admitting that Jacob only gave her one lesson. All the other times, he came over to hang out with Margo.
Margo is at home admiring her handiwork when the front door opens and the alarm beeps. She calls out to Bobby before the story abruptly returns to a heated JD, who claims this is the first time he’s hearing about Margo and Jacob’s hanging out. Paul lures JD into the attic to confront him while Lydia is revealed to be Margo’s guest. JD claims he never hurt Jacob while Margo admits that Jacobs had a crush on her but she never slept with him. As the dual confrontation continues, Margo tries to spin the story that Jacob robbed them and JD caught him and acted in self-defense. While telling her lies, Margo goes for a weapon, but Lydia is faster and pulls out the 9 mm. Lydia leaves with Margo’s purse and returns home just as Paul discovers the truth for himself. Lydia encourages him not to do anything rash and claims that she is going to call her lawyer. As she does so, Paul goes to Jacob’s room where he apologizes to Jacob and has several fond memories from his childhood.
Paul also asks Jacob to put in a good word for him with Lydia, if he happens to talk to her. Lydia overhears this and asks him why he doesn’t tell her himself. He tells her that he loves her and she responds by thanking him. While Sarah and Leslie update each other on what they’ve learned about the Morgan case/house, Carla and Dennis open baby gifts at home. Dennis notices that one of the gifts is from Carla’s father and gets a real kick out of the message. Carla doesn’t so much but when she gets up to respond to the crying newborn, Dennis discovers a $5 million check hidden inside. He chooses not to share the discovery with Carla.
With the help of Paul, Mikey returns Lydia’s piano as repayment for the detox. When she inquires as to how they managed such a feat, Paul simply tells her that they had to make a sizable donation to the USC Shoah Foundation. He tells her not to worry about it because if they ever unload the house, they will make their money back. It is Lydia who has the surprise this time when she tells Paul that she’s already handed it.
The story quickly changes to Margo who is taking a bath and stewing on Lydia’s earlier insult. Her brief memory finally unveils the story of how Jacob really died. It turns out that he broke into Lydia’s house to steal back what jewelry he had given her. In the process, she threatens to blab to the entire neighborhood that he is a thief. He in turn threatens to tell JD about their affair. As Jacob leaves, Margo follows him all the way home and shoots him with JD’s .40 caliber just as he attempts to make it through the kitchen door. After this memory fades, JD and Margo’s house randomly catches fire while Margo is still in the tub. As she cries out for help, JD is shown silently cruising down the highway in his car.
The story skips ahead 6 months to reveal that Dennis has completed his third book, Ghosts Of Our Forefathers and dedicated it to his father, Jimmy. The ensuing conversation with Carla also reveals that they are the new proud owners of what used to be JD and Margo’s house. With Dennis’s book advancement, they have the opportunity to build their dream home. Denise also briefly joins the scene to reveal that she has moved in to help with the baby. When it is just Dennis in the scene, he receives a text from Carla’s father, confirming that Dennis has cashed the check but at the same time wants to see his grandson.
Sarah and Leslie christen what will be their baby’s new room while enjoying the view of their Mandarin Tree. Although Margo escaped the house fire with her life, she did not get out completely unscathed. The entire right side of her face is now scarred but it soon won’t make a difference thanks to Nate. JD gets his dream role as a cowboy, while Lydia and Emily play a duet that Jacob wrote. Paul admires the rendition from a table with a light that begins flickering after the introduction.
No Good Deed Final Review
I am not usually a big proponent of the sappy, happy ending, but I was surprisingly glad to see everything work out for all the good guys. It was also very fitting that Margo turned out to be the bad guy and got justice at the hands of Nate in the end. I have to give Margo credit for being such a dislikable villain.
I have always enjoyed the comedy of Ray Romano and Denis Leary is an incredible actor in some roles. While he didn’t really get the opportunity to shine in this, what he did on Rescue Me was absolutely incredible. I have never cared much for Lisa Kudrow or O-T Fagbenle, but I am now seeing them in all new lights. Both Luke and Owen have also been long-time favorites, although I can admit they are not the most versatile actors. All that said, this finale easily earns a 6.6 out of 10.
