Far Away – The episode opens with Evelyn Wiseman (Amanda Lawrence) pulling a cart down a mountain toward a lone house. She flips on the radio, sets a jar of sauerkraut on a shelf, writes “Supposed to be” in her diary, and stares at her reflection in the mirror. She goes out to collect eggs and documents the number on her notepad. Her washing machine malfunctions. It appears as if she has experienced the same time of type before. She repeats it over and over when a news report about the Rigby’s Toys bombing draws her attention. Looking in the mirror, she grows more frantic while watching her reflection carrying a basket through the house. Elsewhere, Gideon Shepherd (Peter Capaldi) stares at his investigation board when he receives a call from DI Lucy Chambers (Jessica Raine) asking if he can defuse a bomb. He assures her that he can stop the individual once he is identified and if not, he will reset. Refusing to reset, she threatens to notify the police. He warns against telling anyone what they know. She admits to shooting Steve Dunn (Jimmy Walker). He urges her to come to his place and burn her clothes. Inside her car, she wipes the blood from her face when Debbie Warren (Rhiannon Harper-Rafferty) calls. She is forced to change her plans because Isaac Chambers (Benjamin Chivers) suffered a dog bite. Later, Lucy arrives to pick up Isaac. Giving her a cloth tied around his wound, Debbie denies any of them saw the dog but Meredith Warren saw him disappear.
Ravi Dhillon (Nikesh Patel) listens to music while staring at Dunn’s bloody, lifeless body. Sam Boyd (Saffron Hocking) snaps a photo of the stolen Subaru before giving Ravi a file with Shrewsbury Museum archival photos of a man and girl at the “Faraway Farm.” She says if Lucy knew, it would be obstruction of justice. He reluctantly agrees to visit the farm and question Lucy on the record. Elsewhere, Isaac tells Gideon that he keeps his broken watch because it deters ghosts. Gideon says it doing what it is supposed to and dogs sense things that humans cannot. He claims to have killed a “broken” dog and suggests the dog that lived bit him because it sensed something that no longer exists. Gideon urges him to keep the watch. Lucy rushes Isaac off to get ready for bed. Gideon attributes Isaac’s existence to himself. She finds Isaac and Sylvia Chambers (Barbara Marten) staring at each other.
Ravi dreams of proposing to Lucy and her accepting before waking at 8:05am. He calls Lucy to check on her. She claims to have Isaac at the hospital because he suffered a dog bit, “believe it or not.” Taken aback, he says they need to question her at the police station. She insists he asks her now. He asks her about Evelyn Wiseman. Pretending to know nothing, she hurriedly ends the call. Gideon warns her of what will happen if she tells the police what she knows about the Rigby’s Toys bombing. He says they will put them on drugs that will zap their memories and echoes. She threatens to kill him if any harm comes to Ravi. He speeds away toward the Faraway Farm. Lucy gives Isaac a phone to reach her and promises to never leave him. A short time later, she tries to convince Ravi to not go to the farm. When he refuses, she blurts out that she is pregnant. Pulling a note from his favorite book, she says he got jealous when Rhea found it on his birthday. He took it from her piggy bank and when she discovered it missing, she cried herself to sleep. Ravi threatens to arrest her for obstruction of justice if he finds Evelyn at the farm.
The pub landlady (Diane Axford) tells Boyd that Jack Graham is in the hospital. She receives a call from Elena Rogers (Rosie Jones) telling her about Isaac and claims he has suffered injuries in the past. She claims Lucy is an old colleague of the workers at Children Services. Elsewhere, Isaac squeezes his watch tightly in one hand and holds Sylvia’s hand with the other. They sit quietly on the bed. At the Faraway Farm, Gideon discovers Evelyn’s sketch of Rigby’s Toys. She approaches from behind as he stuffs the drawings in his pocket. While stuffing her things into a bag, he warns that the police are coming. She insists on telling Jonah and shuts herself in a room. En route to the farm, Lucy discovers Ravi’s Tazer. He demands she put it back in the glove box. She assures him that he has always known her. He turns up the music. Elsewhere, Sylvia suddenly remembers everything. She tells Isaac that she has been asleep for a long time and thanks him for waking her up. Back at the farm, Gideon pleads with Evelyn to leave with him from outside the door. She emerges from her room and embraces him. They meet Ravi and Lucy on the road. They both pull over to the side of the road. Retrieving the Tazer, Ravi emerges from his car, and orders Gideon to get out of his truck. Gideon reveals his shotgun, emerges from his truck, and gradually walks toward Ravi. Lucy urges Ravi to listen to Gideon. As Ravi activates his Tazer, Lucy steps in front of it and collapses to the ground. He frantically removes the Taser barb. After Lucy comes to, Gideon shoots out Ravi’s front tire before speeding away. Ravi accuses Lucy of warning Gideon and tries to make a call. She says there is no signal there. He puts her under arrest and starts to change the tire.
Boyd asks the receptionist (Curtis Callier) about Graham. Overhearing their conversation, a woman tells her that a detective visited Graham yesterday and showed him photos. Kevin (Winston Ellis) locates CCTV footage of Lucy in the receptionist area. Elsewhere, Lucy tells Ravi that it is crucial for the bomber to execute his plan and reveal his face. Irate, Ravi bangs on the steering wheel and claims to love her. She starts bleeding. At the hospital, Dr. Rebecca Ford (Victoria Bolt) doesn’t find any uterine damage. Lucy tells Ravi that they turned to IFV therapy and they still couldn’t get pregnant. She says it is good the baby is gone. While they embrace, he remembers their time together and his desire to name their baby Amir. He returns from the vending machine to find Lucy gone. He receives a call from Boyd informing him that the DNA at the crime scene does not belong to Dunn. She follows Lucy to Sylvia’s house. Sylvia tells Lucy that she is back and can see her. Isaac brags about making her better when Boyd enters. Lucy says her wife is Danielle and her son, George, will be a graphic designer, not a firefighter like wants. Gideon walks away. Boyd pushes Lucy against the wall. Gideon approaches her from behind and places a cloth over her mouth. Boyd struggles against him. Lucy orders him to restrain her as the episode ends.
The Devil’s Hour Review
In the previous episode, Isaac revealed his ability to disappear at will. Now, he can heal Sylvia’s dementia-ridden mind. Lucy can now recall her past life and share bits of their time together with Ravi.
While her story is gripping and emotional, it lacks credibility and direction. The continuous revelations are spinning the story out of control with no legible ending in sight. The episode deserves a 5.5 out of 10.
