You Really Don’t Want To Kill This Scrumptious Little Puppy – Episode 9 begins with Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn) and Doctor Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez) saying goodbye to Neville Stafford (Ronald Peet) and Dawnie (Reese Antoinette) after an evening of drinks and good food. After finding Ya-Ya (L. Scott Caldwell) hiding at Mrs. Martin’s (Avery Sommers) house, Gracie/The Dragon Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) will say a similar goodbye, with much different intentions. Ya-Ya refuses to join her while ominously warning Gracie that the island will never let her leave. Gracie appears bound and determined.

Yancy and Rosa spend the morning on the beach discussing their prospective futures when she receives word that Eve (Meredith Hagner) and Christopher/Nick Stripling (Ron Delaney) want her to accompany them on a flight to Miami today to get the money in order to get ahead of the oncoming storm. At the same time, Bonnie Witt (Michelle Monaghan) tests the relationship that he’s begun developing with a much younger guard, Tomas Martinez (Nicolas Sellar). At the moment, he’s not completely wrapped around her finger but it’s only a matter of time because she uses him to escape sometime later.

Ya-Ya finds a possible new protégé, in Lulu (Amina Massai) during a visit at Nachline Swaine’s (Meggie Cherilus) gravesite. At nearly the same time, Gracie’s encounter with an Airport Security Guard (Essex O’Brien) proves Ya-Ya’s earlier premonition true.

Rosa has just arrived at the Stripling’s house as Neville and Yancy put the finishing touches on boarding up Dawnie’s house. Rosa attempts to speed up the process by continually reminding Eve of the impending storm, but Eve is insistent on a toast. Right after Rosa sends Yancy a text confirmation text that everything is going as planned; she learns that Eve is stalling because she’s seen the photo at the barn with her, Yancy, and K.J. Claspers (Bob Clendenin). Rosa attempts to leave but Egg (David St. Louis) is there to prevent that.

Assuming that they have plenty of time to kill, Yancy and Neville make a stop at the bar before their fishing trip. It doesn’t take Yancy long to spot Gracie and invite himself to join her. Just as quickly their conversation goes from joking to serious when Gracie tells Neville that he won’t be getting his money back. Neville throws her for a loop when he claims there is no need because the curse worked. Yancy will be the next to be taken by surprise when the conversation leads to him learning that Eve knows the truth about Rosa. Yancy leaves the bar on Neville’s bicycle in panic. As he races towards the Stripling’s house, a phone call to Rosa reveals that Egg has moved her offsite to what appears to be a small work trailer. Egg also calls Christopher to alert him that Yancy is on his way.

Not long after arriving at the Striplings, Yancy finds himself being held at gunpoint by Christopher. Despite the one arm, he wields the shotgun adeptly and even manages to cock it with ease. The noise however leads to major problems because it alerts Eve, who wants no part in cleaning pieces of Yancy out of the bedroom. Yancy will use the opportunity to grab Tilly. This buys Yancy enough time to allow Neville to get into position and stab Christopher from behind with a fishing rod.

While Yancy and Neville escape to Dawnie’s house, Gracie has a strange encounter with a drunk female at the bar who is later suggested to be an apparition of her mother. Shortly after returning to Dawnie’s house, Rosa shows up with a wild story about how she escaped, which in no small part can be attributed to the gun that Yancy snuck into her purse before she met with Eve. After a very brief strategy session, it becomes clear that they need to get off the island and Yancy apparently already has a plan in store and asks for a ride.

Just a few minutes later at Andre’s Fritters Yancy’s plan is revealed as KJ Claspers. Although he is in no position to negotiate, KJ agrees to fly them off the island if they take another photo with him. It isn’t until Eve manages to remove the fishing rod from Christopher’s back that she realizes how bad the wound is and that she needs help. This sends her in search of Gracie, but instead, she finds Ya-Ya who has just found the rebuilt altar.

The episode ends with Eve finding Gracie retransformed into the Dragon Queen.

 

Bad Monkey Review

Not a horrible episode but certainly nothing spectacular. I do like the way things are set going into the finale. At least with not such a great pre-finale, it means that the actual finale could only be better. Despite the Dragon Queen not being one of my favorite characters, I have always found Voodoo-type religion intriguing. It’ll also be nice to see what kind of revenge she’ll extract.

Poor Christopher, the guy just can’t get ahead and I’d contribute a great deal of that to Eve. She’s a pretty lady but not pretty enough for all the trouble she’s caused. I’d give this episode a 5.2 out of 10.
