When We Go – The episode begins the morning after the attack on the town with Victor Kavanaugh (Scott McCord) and Jade (David Alpay) in the bar/gas station with the animals. Against Victor’s advice, Jade eventually goes to the barn to assess the damage. Once there, he’ll find what’s left of Tian-Chen Liu (Elizabeth Moy) and Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) handcuffed, ranting in Cantonese. Elsewhere, Kenny Liu (Ricky He) is startled awake by the distance yelling of Jim Matthews (Eion Bailey), who has miraculously found a fertile riverbank overflowing with fully ripe crops.

Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) wakes on Henry’s (Robert Joy) couch to learn that she passed out on the porch and is now being held at gunpoint. It soon becomes clear that he isn’t going to let her leave and wants answers as to how she got the lunchbox. She’ll attempt to tell him everything from the family road trip to the tree in the road and the mysterious town but he’ll continually interrupt her until she yells that Victor gave her the lunchbox. Not only does he not believe her but he reveals that he’s already phoned the cops.

Sara Myers (Avery Konrad) doesn’t have much better luck when she meets with Kristi (Chloe Van Landschoot) to tell her about Tian-Chen’s death. The scene in town isn’t much better as Jade and Boyd assume the task of taking Tian-Chen’s body to the church. The two are completely silent until Boyd gently carries her inside the church and tells Jade that she would have wanted to be buried with Bing-Qian Liu (Simon Sinn).

Both Ethan (Simon Webster) and Julie Matthews (Hannah Cheramy) are having a hard time with the death as well and Victor’s panicked arrival only makes matters worse when Julie tries to get his help with calming Ethan down. In an agitated state, Victor harshly tells Ethan the reality of the situation.

Despite the online article about the Matthew’s disappearance, Henry continues to refuse to believe the story Tabitha is telling him. At one point, he even suggests that she somehow faked the articles. His whole outlook on the situation changes when she mentions the children in the tower. He doesn’t get much time to pursue this avenue thanks to the cops knocking at the door. Much to her surprise, he apologizes to cops and claims he mistook a dog for an intruder. When he returns, he abandons he revolver and sets out to make her something to eat.

Boyd is stunned by Donna’s (Elizabeth Saunders) harsh reaction to his story about the monsters using the livestock as bait. Her claims that he should have been more concerned with the people as opposed to the animals leads to a brief blowup. Before she rushes off to field-dress the dead cow she apologizes and admits that she isn’t angry at him but their situation.

Ellis Stevens (Corteon Moore) will plead with Fatima (Pgah Ghafoori) to let Kristi examine her as her morning sickness worsens. She will attempt to play down the situation until her teeth begin falling out. Instead of finding Kristi at the hospital, they are greeted by Mari/Marielle (Kalen Ohm). It immediately becomes clear that Ellis is uncomfortable with Mari examining Fatima. Despite her claims of being an experienced pediatric nurse, his tension is only slightly eased.

Kristi joins Boyd at the empty swimming pool with the upended truck for a brief reflection on the many people they’ve lost over the years. This won’t last long thanks to Jim and Kenny’s triumphant return. It is Jim who is initially freaked out by the town’s macabre feel and assumes something went wrong with the kids. Although it only takes Kenny a few seconds to put two and two together, it takes him much longer to grasp the gravity of his mother’s death.

While Kenny comes to grips with his mother’s passing, Mari takes note of Ellis’s discomfort with her. Despite initially making the situation even more awkward by confronting him, the confrontation appears to do the trick. As far as Fatima goes, she is badly malnourished with an acute degree of morning sickness, commonly known as Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

Kenny and Kristi’s conversation in the diner suggests that he is now caught up on the attack and all that proceeded. He will ultimately make her promise to make Tian-Chen look normal for the funeral so he can remember her in a good light. Once left alone, Kenny has a tantrum on one of the tabletop jukeboxes that randomly begins blaring Kool and The Gang’s Celebrate.

Jim’s reunion with Julie is no better as she blows up over his abandonment. They will go back and forth for a few seconds, but before walking out, she practically tells him that she can’t play the ‘fill-in’ parent to Ethan again as he loses his marbles like he did when Thomas died. Tabitha has had much more luck with Henry and as she finishes her soup, he tells her about Miranda Kavanaugh (Sarah Booth) having visions of the children in the tower before she disappeared. Things take an enigmatic turn when she says that she truly believes she was sent to find him. He will tell her that she was sent to find what he has in the basement.

Fatima has an even stranger experience when she returns to the Colony House to find several boxes of rotten crops on the front porch. Whether it is hunger or the acquisition for a new taste, she’ll tear into them. At the same time, Donna will try to comfort Ethan when he encounters her field dressing the cow. With the help of Jade, Kristi appears to have gotten a good start on transforming Tian-Chen. Much to their surprise, Sara shows up with a dress that Tian-Chen was apparently fond of and often tried on during the slow times at the diner.

Boyd finds Kenny at the bar filling several large jars with homemade hooch. Boyd makes a brief joke but Kenny’s intentions are clear. Much to Kenny’s surprise, Boyd doesn’t try to stop him but agrees to go with him. They will get all the way to the entrance of the tunnels before a conversation leads to Boyd revealing that he was with Tian-Chen when she died. Boyd’s claims about her strength inspire Kenny to abandon his suicidal attack. Instead, he goes to the chapel to view Tian-Chen’s body.

While Julie thanks Sara for saving her and Ethan the previous night, Henry shares his basement of Miranda’s treasure with Tabitha and expands even further on her visions. As she looks around in amazement at the paintings and listens to his stories, Tian-Chen’s funeral will play out as well.

Ellis attempts to check on Boyd after the funeral but Boyd is all fired up about his plan of capturing one of the creatures to learn more. Ellis agrees to help him the following day. The Matthews are returning home when Julie mentions checking on and feeding the animals before dark. Ethan will go with her leaving Jim to return home alone.

The episode ends with Jim receiving a phone call from Thomas. He sounds around the age of Ethan.

 

From Review

Now this was a great episode that easily deserves a 6 out of 10. If not for some of the needlessly long, drawn out scenes, it could have even gone higher. Despite that, everything that transpired was incredibly intriguing and had the performances to match. Both Kenny and Boyd did a decent job of showcasing their motions. I’m not saying they were Oscar-worthy but not bad at all. It was really more of the intrigue of this episode that drew me in.

I’m not sure how to take the scene with Fatima. Was she starving and afraid to eat or has she developed an odd appetite for the rotten crops? She kept claiming that she wasn’t hungry.
