Frasier Season 2 Episode 3 Recap

All About Eve – As episode 3 begins, Doctor Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) has just returned to his office to find Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin) waiting. In just a few seconds he will have learned that she’s in town to comfort her daughter, Alice, over a recent breakup. Despite this, Alice apparently blew her off to spend the evening with a friend. Frasier is happy to jump on the opportunity and Eve appears equally excited just to be considered for an evening out. That is until she learns the evening will consist of an art gallery opening. She nearly cancels and would have likely succeeded if not for Freddy Crane’s (Jack Cutmore-Scott) and Olivia Finch’s (Toks Olagundoye) quick intervention. Eve is further stunned to learn that Freddy and Olivia are attending. Olivia apparently has nothing better to do and Freddy is pursuing a bartender with box seats at Fenway.

The evening is immediately and drastically upended when a nearby Eve (Jess Salgueiro), with an armload of laundry and Baby John, tells them they are lucky to just have a free evening. Much to the displeasure of the men, Roz volunteers their time and makes it her personal mission to give Eve the night of a lifetime. Olivia will not so casually get herself invited along.

Three Men And A Baby – After realizing that his apartment isn’t baby-proofed, Frasier and the men will end up in the bar where they proceed to turn on each other to see who will be left with Baby John. It doesn’t long before the dispute takes a complete 180 when they realize Baby John comes with an added perk, the attention of women. While the men settle on a shared custody-type agreement, the women debate the best way to spend the remainder of their evening. Eve will lead them to what she describes as an immersive theater where the actors interact with the audience. Roz assumes she’s talking about a strip club.

Three Men And Two Babies – Frasier and Freddy are right in the middle of boasting about how easy caring for a baby is when they notice Baby John has disappeared. Those fears only increase when Alan Cornwall (Nicholas Lyndhurst) randomly appears, clutching a baby of an entirely different race. Much to their relief, he’ll not only have an explanation for his but he’s also got John in the stroller. Shortly after Professor Columbus returns to get her baby, both Freddy and Frasier note the late hour and insist on taking John home. Despite that, they appear to be satisfied when Alan unveils some of the stroller’s unique features, such as enclosing the baby in entire darkness.

By this time, the women have learned that the theater has been replaced by a pirate-themed Middle Eastern fusion restaurant called Kaptain Kebab’s. Roz can’t hide her initial amusement over Eve’s distress but becomes insistent on them staying when Eve advocates leaving. This nearly turns into an argument when Eve points out that it is Roz who is in need of the evening out. After admitting Eve is right and apologizing, the women will end up at the gallery.

Three Men And No Baby – Alan delivers a brief, final celebratory toast on a successful evening of picking up chicks, but it isn’t quick enough to go unnoticed by the women. As surprised as Eve is over John’s breaking curfew, she nearly hits the roof upon learning that he isn’t actually in the stroller. Learning that the men dropped John off with David Crane (Ander Keith) several hours ago relieves some of the attention but not enough to prevent her verbal assault. Before making her exit, she promises them an even sterner conversation when they return home.

The bartender that Freddy has been pursuing just happened to overhear the entire dispute. Although she acknowledges him conning her, she claims she can’t be too upset because she doesn’t actually own box seat tickets. Once alone, Frasier calls attention to Alan’s downed attitude throughout the evening. He’ll admit that being around John has stirred up old friends about his and his daughter’s estrangement. Apparently, he’s recently discovered that his eldest daughter is pregnant and chose not to tell him.

Three Men And Three Women And David And A Baby – Eve’s earlier, she is now much calmer having learned that David is surprisingly good with John. Roz will further volunteer their time to look after John for the next five months.

The episode ends with a very short of Freddy and the Bartender having dinner.

Frasier Review

I enjoyed the episode and appreciated the family theme. I had completely forgotten about baby John, so it was pleasant to see the story shine on him a bit. Roz’s appearance was completely out of the blue for me, but I enjoyed that as well as the whole backstory that she brought to the table. I had also forgotten about Alan’s estrangement from his family, so I was happy to see that also. I’m curious to see if this might lead to a prolonged storyline. All in all, a very nostalgic episode that deserves a 5.4 out of 10.
