Critical Incident Series 1 Episode 3 Recap

Resist – Despite Detective Sam Che’s (Danny Kim) earlier lackluster approach to Senior Constable Zilficar ‘Zil’ Ahmed’s investigation (Akshay Khanna), episode 3 opens with him finding body cam footage suggesting that Ahmed was coached.

Ahmed uses an outing with his brother, Kasim Ahmed (Akkshey Caplash), to spy on Dalia Tun (Zoe Boe) and Yvonne Kaczmarek (Emily Martino). Once he’s caught and called out, he then uses Kasim’s social worker status to make things even more awkward. While Kasim accuses Ahmed of arranging the trip, Yvonne tells Dalia that it was Ahmed who saved her life at Brad’s (Jeremy Blewitt) party. Yvonne apparently already has a revenge plan in mind to get back at Ahmed for ruining their day.

Shortly after Ahmed arrives for his shift later that day, Hugh Horvat (Josef Ber) shows up demanding to see the body cam footage from Luka Horvat’s (Luke Greco) accident. Senior Constable Peter Emery (Oliver Acklan) and Superintendent Trevor Latt (Erik Thomson) encourage Ahmed to take an early lunch while they deal see to the matter. Instead of the early lunch, Ahmed winds up in the security office where he watches Hugh view the footage.

As Ahmed deals with a near panic attack over Hugh’s reaction to the footage, Dalia and Yvonne enjoy their handiwork of rewiring Kasim’s horn. Despite their success, they only wish that it would have been Ahmed’s vehicle.

Ahmed briefly debates reaching out to the Horvats with his attorney, Kane Kerr (Sean Hall). Kane wastes little time advising him against doing so and attempts to further distract him by mentioning a sit down with Detective Sergeant Edith Barcelos (Simone Kessell). At the same time, Emery seeks advice from Inspector Ivy Tsuma (Zindzi Okenyo) on how to respond to Dalia and Sabine Horvat’s (Annie Rose Buckley) earlier altercation.

Kane’s plan to keep Ahmed’s focus off speaking with the Horvats backfires. It is during this meeting that Edith reveals the footage that Che discovered earlier. According to her, the footage was pulled from Senior Constable Greg Hall’s (Jackson Hywood) Taser which automatically activates and deactivates when the device is armed or disarmed. Matters go from bad to worse when Ahmed storms from the interview room to see Hugh’s media press conference, publically blaming him for the loss of Luka’s legs. Senior Constable Sandra Ali (Roxie Mohebbi) attempts to provide him with reassurances later that evening but turning down advances doesn’t help his ego.

Trevor meets with Edith to voice his concerns about her applying for the Crime Manager position at the Blacktown Station. He doesn’t appear to be opposed to her taking the position but fears that her recent vilification of Ahmed will only lead to internal problems.

When Dalia is picked up at the group home for her fight with Sabine, Christian (CJ Bloomfield) advises her not to say a word until he calls an attorney. Shanika Thorpe (Dalara Williams) is every bit as good as promised and gets Dalia out of the station nearly before Emery and Constable Phillip Davidson (Challito Browne) can even think about questioning her. She, however, can do little about the house arrest and probation. Ahmed’s session at the gym doesn’t last much longer thanks to the arrival of Greg, who apparently wants to make sure that Ahmed will back him. Ahmed’s only response is that he followed procedure.

Ali becomes concerned when she later witnesses Ahmed accosting Dalia and encouraging her to tell Edith that he identified himself as a police officer. She not only denies that he did but is savvy enough to know that he shouldn’t even be speaking with her. Ahmed continues this harassment by having Dalia searched at school and wellness checked at the group home. After one particular night visit, she apparently has enough and asks Hayden Broadis (Jai Watford) to take her to meet with Ty Egan (Hunter Page-Lochard). It doesn’t take her long to realize that Ty is not only much savvier than she gave him credit for, but they have quite a bit in common. He appears more than eager to help her.

Tsuma meets with Trevor to not only tell him that she’s put in for the Crime Management position, but to let him know that she is well aware he and Edith have previously worked together in other settings. Although she doesn’t come off as threatening, he assures her that he will stay out of it and let the higher-ups make the decision.

Ali becomes upset when she discovers that Zahra Khan (Rina Mousavi) has been sharing news of Dalia’s arrest. Zahra claims she is merely defending him as everyone should be. Ali sees it as Zahra unfairly placing blame on a kid and even goes as far as to say that Ahmed brings a lot of his problems on himself. Elsewhere, it appears that Dalia puts Ty’s advice to use by telling Christian that Alice (Brittany Santariga) makes her feel unsafe. She doesn’t specifically name Alice, but it is suggested this is who she is referring to.

Ahmed spends the day drinking after Ali confronts him about his harassment of Dalia and practically tells him he made the wrong decision following her into that train station. He’s drunk by the time Zahra shows up later that evening. This leads to them kissing and her running off in shame.

The episode ends with Dalia getting arrested. When Ali is called in for the search, Dalia attacks her and begins screaming.

Critical Incident Review

I think the series is starting to grow on me, which is exactly what a good series should do. That said, there were plenty of not-so-great moments and the series could do a much better job of explaining things. The ending scene would be the perfect example. I’m it was fairly self-explanatory but it would have helped to know exactly why Dalia was arrested. I would have also liked to know who she was referring to during her discussion with Christian. Nonetheless, episode 3 deserves a 5.5 out of 10.
