The Void – As the finale of Fantasmas begins, a flashback shows a young Julio being struck by lightning. Bibo (Joe Rumrill) wakes up Julio (Julio Torres) to ask for help running his lines because he’s worried about an audition. Vanesja (Martine Gutierrez) tells Julio over the phone that Dustin wants to create change because America isn’t fair. Julio asks if she’s set up a press conference to announce this. Julio believes he’s found a lead on the oyster. He speaks to a goldfish named Deedra and Bryce about getting the oyster from the bottom of the sea. Bryce writes down information about the oyster. Carl (Spike Einbinder) speaks to his mom about what he’s going to do today. She urges Carl to apply for jobs and invites Carl to come to church. Carl isn’t interested. He watches The True Women of New York. During the show, Genevieve (Emma Stone) approaches Dina (Cole Escola) who is talking about the negative space in the restaurant. The women go on vacation and continue fighting. Behind the scenes, the team is told to bring them more alcohol even though they’re already drunk. At one point, the man in the green costume stops the show and tells Genevieve the truth about the producer, Jared. The man tells Genevieve and Bianca (Rosie Perez) that they can escape. Brandon tells Genevieve his name. He says they’re going to escape tomorrow and they should not go into Jared’s office.

The show continues briefly before it’s time to escape. Genevieve doesn’t think they should leave without Brandon. She goes into Jared’s office to look for him. She finds her creator (James Scully) who calls her so stupid. Bianca catches up with them. The creator tells them that they have a little bit of the source in them. He gets mad at them and yells that it’s enough. When they try to leave, the creator tells them to have fun in prison. He reminds them that they signed a contract. They’re here there or they’re going to jail for tax fraud. He says their attempts at freedom made the perfect season finale. Genevieve and Bianca stay on the show to avoid going to jail. Suzanna (Natasha Lyonne) tells Julio about the show. Julio works with an actor briefly before pitching another idea to Suzanna.

episode 4 fantasmas Julio

Bibo is told that his performance was incredible and transformative. He gets the part, but he doesn’t have a SAG card or proof of existence. Julio throws the script out the window and Carl gets it. Carl finds Vanesja’s number so he decides to call her and say he found a script by Julio. Carl sees himself in those stories and he believes other people would agree. Vanesja thinks they can think of something. Julio urges Suzanna to give Bibo the part regardless. She suggests they can hire him as a prop. Julio doesn’t think he should take it and suggests finding an exception. Julio gets a call and he’s immediately put on hold. Bryce (Sam Taggart) swims behind the mermaids and sees an oyster. Dodo (Bowen Yang) loses the case against Santa. Chester (Tomas Matos) speaks to his passengers about the case.

He tells Edwin (Bernardo Velasco) about his sliding scale before asking for nacho. Carl ends up getting in. Vanesja tells Dustin (Dylan O’Brien) she doesn’t really know what the press conference is about. Dustin has been thinking about it. He talks about his role in the show in the fact that people celebrate him even though he’s getting paid. Dustin thinks they should stop doing the stop until the people at the top promise to redistribute what they earn. Vanesja sees a dot on Dustin’s head but gives the signal to stop. She says they should make it public. The oyster is returned to Julio. Vanesja warns him not to give up his body because those businesses mine people’s abilities to make software to replace people. Vanesja makes Dustin record his announcement.

He mentions he wants a villa in Tuscany. Vanesja doesn’t think he’ll have enough money with the redistribution thing. She explains that he’ll be comfortable but he might not have a villa. Dustin thinks they should call it off. Julio gets a call while waiting for the procedure. ASAP MD tells him that it all looks good. Julio learns that the oyster is not the missing piece. He’s told it’s from Amazon and it’s not one of a kind. He returns home just as they’re starting to demolish his place. Bibo is nowhere to be found. Two months later, Julio got proof so he can get another apartment. Vanesja calls him to say she found some people who are responding to his ideas. Julio goes to the elementary school to see them for himself. Edwin helps Bibo prepare to go on stage.

Gina (Greta Titelman) asks Edwin if Carl prefers Bibo since he got two characters. Edwin tells her to focus on herself and no one else. After the show, Julio is approached by a man with a lot of questions. Vanesja runs into a shadowy figure. Vanesja’s sister says she was the top agent in the business until her lazy artist sister started doing a performance of her and stole her life. Vanesja soon finds out it’s just Bibo messing around. Julio gives the man (Jeter Rivera) his doctor’s note so he can get out of doing anything.

Fantasmas Review

The finale of Fantasmas was interesting and mostly enjoyable although it didn’t stand out as the final episode of the season. The episode did a good job of finishing the concurrent stories with Julio finally relenting and getting proof. Dustin changed his mind about changing the world and Bibo achieved his goal of becoming an actor.

The series obviously isn’t for everyone because of the themes and overall senselessness of the show. Others may enjoy it for these reasons. There are many silly moments throughout each episode, but there’s cleverness and meaning for those willing to look beneath the surface. The series has a unique feel that makes it very relaxing and lackadaisical.

Sometimes, viewers are just looking for something original that can kill time without putting in much effort. Fantasmas is great for those viewers. It’s just so easy to watch and requires minimal effort from viewers. The biggest issue is the release schedule which makes it very difficult to keep up with storylines and characters from week to week.

That’s more on HBO’s part though and is an issue with all Max titles. It’s hard to say whether the viewership numbers will justify it, but I’d be happy to watch another season. The finale scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of Fantasmas can be found on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link.
