The Demon King – As this episode begins, Quinni (Chloe Hayden) receives treatment in the back of an ambulance. Later, she is shown recovering at home. Amerie (Ayesha Madon) and Darren (James Majoos) bring her a gift signed by the whole year group. Quinni says that’s such an obvious way to check handwriting samples. They find that she has a whole evidence board on her wall. Amerie forces Darren to pretend it is probably over. Amerie tells Quinni they just want her to focus on getting better, but Quinni isn’t going to drop it. Woodsy (Rachel House) talks to Voss (Angus Sampson) and Jojo (Chika Ikogwe) about what happened during camp. She blames both of them so she decides to suspend their groups until the end of term.

Malakai (Thomas Weatherall) speaks to Rowan (Sam Rechner) about what happened at camp. Rowan doesn’t think Malakai is ready for this. He doesn’t want to be collateral while Malakai figures things out. Malakai believes he can make it right. Rowan insists this isn’t easy for him. Spider (Bryn Chapman Parish) approaches Sasha (Gemma Chua-Tran) and Missy (Sherry-Lee Watson) while they’re trying to solicit votes. He gives them shirts. Spider pleases Missy again in the parking lot. When she offers to do it for him, Spider stops her and says he likes making her feel good. Darren lets it split that Cash (Will McDonald) is 18. Harper thinks they should move in together. Darren likes the idea and says they could be the epicenter of social life at Hartley. Cash seems hesitant though because he isn’t sure he can afford it.

He eventually blurts out that he can’t do it. Amerie tries to get the computer people to help her make a campaign video. No one is interested in helping her. Rowan is there when they tell her no. Cash tells Darren that they’re in a good place so he doesn’t want to rush things. Quinni arrives at the school to get her phone from Jojo. She learns that the school sent out a letter to parents to see if anyone picked up a phone. Quinni is convinced her phone was stolen. Darren tells Quinni she shouldn’t be there. Quinni asks Jojo to authorize a locker search. Jojo says she’ll see what she can do before asking Darren to walk her home. Rowan offers to help Amerie with her campaign video. Sasha suspects something is going on with Missy who admits she’s been with a man.

Missy pretends Sasha wouldn’t know him. Sasha thinks it’s good that the guy only wants to go down on Missy. Rowan records Sasha throwing her cup on the ground when she leaves. He admits it might be more difficult to get something from the Cumlords. Amerie suggests going undercover. Voss tells the boys he’s sick of the school making the men the scapegoats. He will find a way to keep the lords alive. Rowan records them dancing in provocative ways. Amerie asks what he’s laughing about because he and his boyfriend are part of that messed up club. She apologizes for making it weird. Rowan reveals he broke up with Malakai this morning. He thinks Malakai took it fine, but Malakai is busy sobbing. His mom checks on him. His dad tells her that they need to tell him at some point.

Amerie wants to make sure the Malakai thing wasn’t about her. Rowan says it wasn’t. He could tell Malakai wasn’t totally in on it and he deserves someone who is. They what a movie together so Rowan can show Amerie what romance is supposed to be. Amerie has to leave. Rowan tells her she can come to his place tomorrow night to finish the video. Amerie eventually catches up with Darren, Harper, and Cash. She tells them she was with Rowan but promises they didn’t do anything. Darren thinks they should get Quinni out of her room and do something fun. Cash receives a call from Chook before he finds an excuse to leave the others. Harper suspects something is up so she follows him out. She asks if he doesn’t want to move in together because of her. Cash insists he’s just not ready. Missy visits Malakai who questions how he keeps getting stuff so wrong.

He thought it’d be easier going with a guy. Missy questions whether it’s weird if a guy only wants to go down on her. Malakai thinks it’s suspicious. He wonders if the guy isn’t just sure about her. Missy argues they’re not the problem because they’re bisexual icons. They agree to do things differently. Malakai goes to Amerie to ask why he’s a bad boyfriend. Missy goes to Spider to say he doesn’t get to be unsure about her. She’s wearing lingerie to turn him on. Spider’s mom, Cait (Robyn Malcolm), is there and invites Missy to lunch. She ends up getting stuck. Amerie goes through the reasons Malakai was a bad boyfriend. Then, she tells him about the good things to cheer him up. Amerie stops him from kissing her and says they need to do their own things for a while. She could always tell he wasn’t fully into their relationship.

Next, Amerie and the others take Qunni to the Taronga Zoological Park. Amerie tells her that Rowan has been helping her make a campaign ad video. Darren gets the tickets. Quinni begins panicking. Missy has to wear one of Spider’s t-shirts to lunch with his mom. Cait doesn’t like it. She was hoping the election might be a sign that Spider was growing up a bit. Missy tells Cait about Sasha and their campaign. Missy asks Spider to make it make sense that Cait is his mom. Amerie tells everyone about Malakai’s visit. She has so much to fill Quinni in on. At one point, Cash finds Quinni upset by herself. She thinks everything is wrong and weird. Cash says Darren and Harper are upset that he won’t move out with them. When Quinni seems distraught, Cash quickly says he shut down the idea. Cait learns about the feelings garden. She claims it’s all pretty harmless until it’s not.

Cait doesn’t know how Spencer can run for school captain when he can’t even listen to another person’s point of view. Spider says he just doesn’t want to listen to her. Cait tells Missy not to fall for any of Spencer’s BS. In another language, they argue about Cait drinking another glass before Spider gets up and leaves. Darren and the others surprise Quinni with a birthday present. They give her a phone. She thinks it’s her old phone only to learn it’s a new one. Quinni explains she just wanted the phone because it’d show them who Bird Psycho is. She complains about how everything is changing. Darren goes after her. Amerie asks Harper if she is moving out. Qunni admits she’s been feeling like this for a while. She asks why they can’t go back to the way things were before.

She’d like things to slow down a bit. Darren reminds her that things change and they will keep changing. Darren recommends finding new ways of coping. Quinni has spent her entire life playing by their rules even though they don’t make any sense. Darren tells her to stop. Quinni says she will stop and there will be no more pretending. She is going to look after number one from now on. Cait tells Missy that Spencer is an IVF body. She always wanted a girl so it was disappointing when she found out Spencer doesn’t have a queer bone in his body. Cait talks about masculinity and the possibility that Spencer will do something unforgivable to a girl. Cait wonders if their problems would disappear if a virus got rid of all men. Missy believes they’d be left with a few. Before they go upstairs, Missy tells Cait her painting is fake.

Amerie speaks to Rowan about what happened today. She tells him about finishing the movie. Rowan likes it because it reminds him some of the most beautiful love stories can have painful beginnings. They watch the campaign video. Missy tells Spider she’s sorry he has to live with that. She asks if that’s why he carries on the way he does. Missy doesn’t buy any of the stuff she was saying. Before she leaves, she questions why Spider doesn’t want to have sex with her. Spider says he really wants to but he can’t. He eventually blurts out that he can’t get it up. Missy offers to try anyway, but Spider believes it’d end up being embarrassing for both of them. He tells her to feel free to run away but he sits down and asks about watching a movie. Cash has dinner with Nan and Roger. He learns about Roger’s warehouse in Matraville.

Roger has a residential property where a few friends stayed for a while. Cash suspects Nan has been talking to Darren. Roger wouldn’t charge him a lot of rent. Someone throws a brick through the window before a car speeds away outside. Cash visits Chook (Tom Wilson) to say his nan’s house is off limits. Chook says ratting to the cops is too. He had to get Cash’s attention somehow. Chook needs Cash to come back since he needs a school connection. He tells Cash to go inside so they can figure something out. Amerie learns that Rowan does sand animation. He reluctantly shows it to her. Amerie thinks it’s cool. She asks why the boy is sad. Rowan doesn’t know but he says she can fix it. They almost kiss but don’t. Rowan says they’re almost done with the video so he walks her out.

Quinni talks about finding out how things really work. Malakai’s parents want to speak to him about something. Cash tells Harper and Darren that they should move in together after all. Quinni says the enemy was under her nose the entire time. It appears Rowan has Quinni’s phone in his desk. He writes down “forget Amerie” in his notebook once again. Quinni says the demon king is someone else’s problem now.

 

Heartbreak High Review

This episode of Heartbreak High had a more serious tone compared to the last one. The series is always best when it is playing to its emotional strengths and it did a good job of that here. Darren, Amerie, Harper, and Cash decided to take Quinni to the zoo to cheer her up and help her forget about Bird Psycho. Although it worked, it may have backfired since Quinni may have turned against them. She is distraught about everything changing around her.

In all likelihood, Malakai’s parents are going to tell him that they’re leaving although they probably won’t. With Roger’s help, Cash finally decided to move out with Harper and Darren. Amerie has grown much closer to Rowan who also seems infatuated with her. He may also have Quinni’s phone so he might be the psycho after all.

We also saw Spider in a different way thanks to his extreme mother and learned about his problem. It also seems Chook is going to force Cash to work for him. Overall, this was a stronger episode because it focused on serious storylines and toned down the humor and sex. It scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of Heartbreak High can be found on Reel Mockery here.
