As the third episode of The Couple Next Door begins, Danny (Sam Heughan) thinks about what happened. Gloria (Janine Duvitski) approaches Pete (Alfred Enoch) outside and learns his fish died. Pete approaches Danny to ask if he was at a building supplies place in Sheepscar yesterday. Danny says no since he was in the office all day. Pete admits he might have a big scoop if he can pull it off. He asks about checking a local businessman’s criminal record even if there is nothing on file. Danny says he’d lose his job if he did something like that. Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) daydreams about Danny during a meeting. At work, Gary (Joel Morris) tells Danny that the van contained diamonds.
Danny worries about being caught on CCTV, but Gary thinks he can take care of that. Alan (Hugh Dennis) posts a link on Becka’s page to her naughty videos. The worker comes over to help Jean (Kate Robbins) with the stair lift. He tells her he’ll see her Saturday before leaving. People begin responding to Alan’s post while calling Becka names. Sophie (Ioanna Kimbook) tells Pete that she has some new information. She shows him Colossus Building Supplies’ turnover for the last year. The fictitious Eddie Smallwood has accounts in the Cayman Islands. If he existed, the money in those accounts would make him the richest man in Leeds. Pete believes the story is bigger than just council corruption.
Alan spies on Becka when she runs through the neighborhood. She begins to worry she is being watched. Alan watches Becka as she approaches Evie and asks her what they’re doing this weekend. Becka reveals she has been offered a two-bedroom suite at Forefield Hall Spa. Evie says she’ll speak to Pete. Gary checks the CCTV footage before telling Danny they’re good. He says they need to go see him, but Danny wants Gary to deal with it on his own. Sophie tells Pete about her night with the throuple. Although they play with others, Sophie has never played around with them. It doesn’t mean she wouldn’t because you only live once. Yvonne (Lauren Douglin) tells Becka that half of her class canceled at the last minute.
Danny visits Lena (Deirdre Mullins), gives her money, and says he wants to come in this time. He believes it is time he met him. Danny goes inside where he meets Ethan (Noah Holdsworth). Danny tells Ethan that he is his father. They talk about meeting more often and Danny’s job as a policeman. Molly’s mum (Leila Mimmack) tells Evie that Molly is obsessed with her. She tells Evie she is sorry for her loss. When Becka arrives, Olly (Daniel Bell) asks her what a wh**e is. She tells him to never use that word. Lena doesn’t want Danny to destroy the boy by just up and leaving. When he says he is there for good, Lena urges him to tell his family. Danny doesn’t want to do that just yet.
Lena asks Ethan should be allowed to meet his brother. Danny offers to come back and take him out for the day. Becka tells Evie about Olly. They talk about becoming a parent. Evie is worried it’ll never happen for her. Becka admits this isn’t the life she imagined. Later, Evie tells Pete about the spa date. Pete complains they’re spending all their free time with them. He feels like she is a million miles away from him half of the time. Pete says he is fine with it as long as it is just a normal weekend. Danny gets upset with Olly and yells at him. Then, he tells Becka that Olly doesn’t respect him. She doesn’t believe that. Becka says they’re going to have a lovely weekend together. Evie hears a shriek in the middle of the night so she gets up to look outside.
Danny scares her outside. Evie admits she thought someone was being attacked. Danny didn’t know that they were also coming to the spa. He says Becka must’ve wanted to surprise him. Evie hopes it is a nice surprise. They all arrive at the spa hotel. Pete soon learns he has a massage so it is the first time for everything. The worker tells Jean they’re ready for lift-off. Pete tells Danny he’s never had a massage before. Danny insists they need to live a little. He tells Pete that the masseuse is ridiculously hot. Mel and Siobhan come over to take care of them. Evie tells Becka she has so many questions about the setup she has with Danny. Becka insists she doesn’t get jealous when he is with another woman because it’s an act of trust.
They discuss the possibility of Evie wanting to try it herself. Evie explains it sounds really fun, exciting, and forbidden. She claims she has talked to Pete about it. Pete and Danny join them. Alan tells Jean he has been called out to something. She suggests they could go upstairs together later. Jean talks to him about how they lived in sin before they were married. She found a note the other day in which he said she was the only one for him. Alan claims he is happy before leaving. Becka wants to save it for their friends, but Danny reminds her of their rule. Becka argues that it feels different this time. She says they’re both up for it and she knows Danny wants Evie. Becka thinks they should ignore the rules. Pete tells Evie that it is all a bit weird. He suggests they were lured there to be corrupted.
Evie wonders if something did happen before they talk about Becka being hot. Evie admits she thinks it’d be really hot, but Pete argues that this is insane. Alan learns that they went away for the weekend with the couple from number 49. Evie and the others play a game while getting drunk. They end up setting off the fire alarm so they have to deal with a warning from a worker. Before long, Becka begins kissing Pete. Danny sets his sights on Evie. Pete notices them walking away together. Danny and Evie have sex. Jean uses the lift to go upstairs. Alan snoops around in Becka’s house. Jean tries to guess the password on his computer. Alan watches a video of Becka having sex with another guy and girl as he begins playing with himself.
Jean uses the telescope to see Alan whacking off in Becka’s bedroom. When he sees her, he collapses. Danny worries he shouldn’t have done that, but Evie insists it is fine. Pete is remorseful though. Becka, who is lying in bed alone, checks her social media and finds the link Alan posted.
The Couple Next Door Review
Despite the silliness of the story, I was really trying my hardest to enjoy The Couple Next Door for what it is. Then, the end of the episode rolled around and turned the whole thing into a laughingstock. The series was already unbelievable, but the script is getting worse by the minute. It is comical that they’ve been building up Jean’s stair lift for three episodes just so she could use it to catch Alan masturbating in Becka’s room causing him to have a heart attack or stroke.
Not to mention, it was obvious from the first second that she was going to dig into Alan’s stuff the very moment she got up there. Then, none of the characters are likable in the least. It is hard to believe Becka would receive so much backlash for the videos at this stage in the game. Again, the series is going through the motions without any emotional hook or intrigue.
In one sense, I suppose the show is so bad that it is humorously entertaining. After all, it might be fun to see just how bad it gets. The episode scores a 4.5 out of 10.
