Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Season 4 Episode 6 Recap

Proof Of Concept – The episode opens with Elizabeth Wright (Betty Gabriel) in a committee meeting. Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) is dragged to a cell before his mask is removed. He finds himself face-to-face with Zeyara Lemos (Zuleikha Robinson). Senator Henshaw (Derek Cecil) votes against Elizabeth could end her dreams of being the Director of the CIA.

Coast Of Phetchabu, Thailand – Domingo Chavez (Michael Pena) backpacks their money while Mike November (Michael Kelly) convalesces. Chavez stresses the importance of getting to the nearby fishing village. An injured November suggests utilizing the helicopter GPS to locate the place where Cathy Mueller (Abbie Cornish) was because Ryan will probably be taken there as well.

CIA Headquarters, Langley, Virginia – James Greer (Wendell Pierce) informs Bill Tuttle (Michael McElhatton) that Miranda Rights do not apply here. Tuttle’s 17-year tenure at the CIA earned him Lieutenant status. He was a former 75th Squadron Army Ranger. Greer warns that the CIA confiscated his hard drives. Tuttle claims they are nearly empty. Greer accuses him of knowing where Ryan was taken and the bombs when Cathy calls. Before he can inform her of Ryan being taken hostage, she says Bennu Fah (Ryn Greenwell) and Kyi Fah (Jacelyn Parry) have no actionable “intel.”

Undisclosed Location – Zeyara warns a beaten Ryan that he does not want to black out because waking up won’t be pleasant. Under the threat of electrocution, he is grilled about what Chao Fah (Louis Ozawa) told him before he died. He says their time together was cut short before she had him killed. Hit with the electrical leads, she reminds him of the four triggers that the CIA did not get. He tells her that they are on their way to the United States. She claims it was always about “proof of concept,” of America’s current vulnerable state.

Fishing Village, Thailand – Chavez tries to acquire a rusty blade and sheath when the seller announces the price, 100 Baht. November brings several gallons of gas to the boat as Chavez tinkers with his new spear gun. Chavez plans to find Ryan while November is a bit affronted he won’t be part of the rescue. He questions where they are going to get a plane, despite Du Muang Air Force Base being only 100 miles away. Chavez says Somsak (Rick Kiesewetter) knows where to get one. November warns that Somsak will kill him and take his money, if not, he can return for him and Ryan.

CIA Headquarters Langley, Virginia – Elizabeth invites Adebayo “Ade” Osoji (Okieriete Onaodowan) to a meeting. Greer congratulates her with a bouquet of flowers. As she turns her computer to allow Ade to see Tuttle on the screen, Greer says they know about the Sanderson Tribute. Ade assures him that he is guilty of nothing but being charitable. She asks if was a coincident Thomas Miller (John Schwab) was utilizing the same shell companies to fund an illegal international operation. He assures her that he would be open to “immunity.” Greer laughs when Ade asks how they would like to know Ryan’s location.

Coast Of Mawlamyine, Myanmar – With a spear gun in hand, Chavez makes a clear landing.

Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs, Maryland – Bennu alludes to her stuffed animal, “Mun,” being the barrier of valuable secrets. Ripping open the seam, Cathy discovers a flash drive hidden inside Mun.

Undisclosed Location – Ryan is out cold while Zeyara runs her finger along an old military injury. She claims the infrastructure has remained unchanged. He warns that no one will invest money in something that has not been proven to exist. A bucket of hot water is emptied on his exposed skin. She demands to know what else he knows about the Marketplace. When he refuses to speak, she assures him that the punishment can get more severe. Salt on his raw skin sends him writhing in agony. Outside the former British detainment facility, Chavez barrels toward the entrance in a burning car. Drawing the guard’s attention, he rappels down the side of the stone structure.

CIA Headquarters, Langley, Virginia – Greer tosses a manila folder, with Thomas Miller and Tuttle’s encrypted files, in front of Tuttle. The CIA has not been successful in decoding the files. Greet says he will not be offered a deal. Tuttle suggests Ade is working with the CIA before removing a topography photo with several marked locations.

Du Muang Air Force Base, Thailand – November speaks with a familiar acquaintance about borrowing a plane. Removing a worn business card from his pocket, he is willing to back. Purposely given the card face down with an American Eagle logo, the man flips the card over to learn that he is dealing with an authentic CIA consultant.

Undisclosed Location – Chavez takes out several guards before finding where Ryan is being held. A grenade takes out to guards grabs Zeyara’s attention. She orders two of her men to locate the source which is believed to be Chavez. She puts her theory to the test when speaking to the unseen man. She points out it is strange their paths never crossed before. She threatens to shoot Chavez on sight. She says if he walks away, they will give him money for the families of his fallen comrades. Chavez approaches with his weapon drawn. All she says is Chavez, in an attempt to plead with him and he puts a bullet in her before the name is fully out of her mouth.

CIA Headquarters, Langley, Virginia – November informs Greer of Ryan and Zeyara. When Greer rushes in to tell Elizabeth, Ade is signing a deal that gives him immunity. He sarcastically congratulates them. Senator Henshaw also calls to congratulate the “hero” (her).

With Jack home safe, everyone is eager to start digging into the uncovered “intel.” November is impressed with Patrick Kinghoffer’s (Adam Bernett) effort. Greer enters with a Bible which is obviously the decoder. It is revealed the Marketplace goes door-to-door through Myanmar to Mexico, stopping once in Lagos. The President was assassinated so the criminal organization could gain control of the port. Tuttle claims to know where the bombs are stored. Learning Ade made the final arrangements, Ryan asks what he was sent. The organization utilized snail mail because it eliminated an electronic trail. Being detained has prevented Tuttle from receiving an update on the expedited shipment. He denies any knowledge of the shipment being pushed up. Ryan asks what was the shipment destination. Tuttle leaves it open for the “Hardy Boy” in the room, Greer.

BizHub Offices In Bethesda, Maryland – The team receives a set of keys clad on a dealership tag. Phoning that dealership, they speak Derek Hill (Derek R. Hill) who announces five Toyota Tacoma vehicles will be waiting at the border in the morning.

US/Mexican Border – Ryan informs border control that five new Toyota Tacoma vehicles, registered to Derek Hill Motors in Houston, Texas, will be arriving from the Progreso Pier. Panicking, the driver shoots several border agents with a sawed-off shotgun before plowing through to the border gate Military intervention is needed to force the driver to bring the carrier to a halt. Emerging from the vehicle, the driver starts firing. A shootout ensues as media helicopters hover overhead. Chavez takes out the last gunman while Ryan and November disarm the bomb. It’s only a matter of doing that additional times and the threat will be eliminated.

Washington Restaurant – Ade joins Elizabeth at the bar. Feeling what he had done was for the better, he offers to help improve her new position. Handing him a Mormon Bible, she asks if the Mormons rescued him during the war and paid for his education. She says a Mormon Bible was utilized to decode the intel. She points out that Miller didn’t worship Mormonism as police sirens are getting closer. He reminds her of their deal. She says the door is left open for local homicides.

Senate Intelligence Committee, Washington – Ryan is sworn in by Senator Henshaw who boasts of America’s prevalence. After a bit of back and forth, Ryan explains what he was feeling when facing a bomb disarming. He admits to violating protocol because it was instinctual. Disarming the bombs was his main priority. Zeyara Lemos expedited a well-planned operation at a magnitude unheard of. He adds the pressures on a closing timetable only open the door for mistakes. Senator Jennings (Nancy Lenehan) asks about the mistakes He says little mistakes with catastrophic effects. The room erupts when Jack delivers the very document that was drafted to expedite the shipment with Senator Henshaw’s signature on it.

 

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Review

Let me start by saying that I have never read a Tom Clancy novel. I have, however, had the privilege of enjoying many great espionage authors. I’m also a fairly big fan of the genre. By no means an expert, but familiar enough. That said, I enjoyed this 6 episode series.

Overall, I enjoyed the main story arc, and the few side stories weren’t that bad either. However, for some reason, I feel like a lot of this came too easily. It seemed as if Jack’s escape and especially Cathy’s was far too easy. Even Elizabeth’s confirmation against Henshaw’s wishes seemed too easy. I didn’t care for the torture scenes, especially when they scalded Jack’s back. It wasn’t because of the brutality, but I felt the emotion in Jack wasn’t there. I am a huge fan of Krasinki since “the office” days, but feel he didn’t pull it off. All in all, the series deserves an easy 5 of 10.

Henshaw could make a powerful nemesis should the creative minds want to extend the series. Not a regrettable watch. Would recommend to anyone fond of the genre.
