As this episode of Somebody Somewhere begins, Fred Rococo (Murray Hill) plays cards with Sam, Joel, and Tiffani (Mercedes White). Joel (Jeff Hiller) is reminded that it is his turn, but he claims he is still deciding what to do. Tiffani questions whether they ever wonder what people do in their house. Sam (Bridget Everett) says Joel made a list of rules, but Tiffani doubts anyone would pay attention to it. Sam and the others suspect people are banging on his bed and elsewhere in his house. They soon learn that Fred invited Susan who goes around hugging everyone.
When Susan leaves to freshen up, Fred explains it is Susan the fiancée. They continue playing and Susan eventually joins them. Fred asks who doesn’t love a beautiful mathematician. They begin telling the others how they got together. Susan explains she had to come out to her dad and tell him that he is trans. Later, Sam and Joel speak about that in the vehicle alone. Sam suggests Susan was a little boring and it might be too fast. Joel thinks it is wonderful because they’re so cute together and seem so happy. Sam is happy for them, but she doesn’t want her playing poker with them every week. She claims she is just kidding. Joel tells her not to worry because he’ll always tie her shoes for her.
The next day, Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) waits on Sam so they can visit their mother together. When Sam gets there, Tricia says she isn’t going in. Sam doesn’t want to go in either because she went in last time. They agree to go in together, but Tricia threatens to leave if she says anything. Once they go inside, the receptionist (Justen Ross) tells Sam that Mary Jo put her on the no visitors list. Tricia asks to speak to a manager so Sam calls her Karen and asks her to cool it. She insists she’ll get Sam removed and she can visit tomorrow. Sam leaves and Tricia visits Mary. Then, Sam joins Joel and Fred for toast at a restaurant. Fred asks what they thought of Susan.
Fred wants Joel to officiate and Sam to sing at the wedding. Sam suggests doing “Rock You Like A Hurricane”. Susan has something in mind so Fred will send it to Sam later. Later, Sam and Joel go to a sex shop to find something nice for Fred. Joel contemplates what he is going to say in front of a big crowd. Sam says she has a song before letting Joel listen to it. Although Joel loves the song, Sam isn’t sure she can sing this style of music. Joel begins crying. Tricia is busy working at Ballards Grocery. She runs into someone who knows her and is asked why she is out there in Junction City. After Tricia says she likes the drive, the woman says she misses Tender Moments.
She goes on to say Tricia is doing so well out there selling those houses. Tricia reminds her that she is Tricia. She claims she is doing great before managing to get rid of the customer. Sam works at Reed & Elliott Jewelers. She helps Drew who leaves a short time later. Sam asks her boss Ray whether Stephanie likes her voice teacher. Ray admits she does and says Stephanie decided to go to K-State because she loves Darlene. Sam is surprised to learn that Darlene Edwards is still around. Ray mentions that the fall recital is next week. Tricia looks at Charity on social media before leaving a nasty comment. Sam and Joel go to the middle school for the recital.
Darlene Edwards walks on the stage to welcome everyone to the recital. Stephanie Elliot eventually gets to sing “Widmung”. Sam knows the song well because it satisfies her depressive side. Once she finishes, Brad Schraeder walks onto the stage. Sam and Joel giggle when Brad begins singing. After the singing ends, Sam approaches Darlene and is quickly recognized. Sam asks if they could pick up where they left off. Darlene says she really stopped before they even got started. Once Sam tells her about her upcoming thing, Darlene says she’d love to help. Meanwhile, Joel tries Brad’s family recipe. Sam comes over to say it might be a terrible idea, but she is starting on Tuesday.
When they try the sushi, they agree it is kind of good and kind of gross. Later that night, Sam goes through the old tapes she made with Holly and Tricia. While listening to the song, she gets up quickly and calls Joel. He has to hold on because Sam has diarrhea. When Sam finally returns to the call, it is Joel’s time to use the bathroom. They realize something really bad is happening to them. Once Sam finishes, she finds that she doesn’t have any toilet paper.
Somebody Somewhere Review
This episode of Somebody Somewhere had some good moments when Sam and the others were able to reflect on things, but some of those moments were a little overshadowed by the humor. In some ways, the humor is really limiting the potential of the show since it could reach emotional highs if the humor didn’t get in the way.
The humor is cheeky and sometimes over-the-top. It works sometimes, but viewers have likely seen other things done numerous times in other shows. At this point, I just feel like there needs to be more focus on the serious aspect of the story because that is where Somebody Somewhere is really going to shine.
Nevertheless, this wasn’t a bad episode since it seems like the story is heading in that direction. It scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of Somebody Somewhere are available on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link. Learn more about advertising on Reel Mockery here.
