Somebody Somewhere Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

NNP – As this episode of Somebody Somewhere begins, Sam (Bridget Everett) and Joel (Jeff Hiller) walk at the park and talk about the hotties around. After getting 10,000 steps, they sit down and the conversation continues. Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) calls Sam to say they need to meet because she has their dad’s list. After the call, Sam tells Joel that Tricia would never play pound it or pass. They see Roger nearby and Joel says he is glad he is okay. They argue about doing another lap before doing one.

Sam meets Tricia and they begin talking about their dad and his list. He wants them to see their mother every day, put in storm windows, vacuum, feed the chickens, mow the lawn, check the sump pump, and clean out the barn. Tricia argues that she doesn’t have time for this. Sam asks if she is just happy he is finally doing something for himself. After Tricia says his timing sucks, Sam claims she is going to come by later to say goodbye to Shannon. Sam and Joel go through the drive-through at Freddie’s to get drinks. They pretend to be husband and wife since that is what the clerk thinks.

At home, Sam admits she wishes tonight wasn’t a designated non-drinking night. Joel thinks it is time for a DN and suggests they go out. When he begins talking about yoga friends, Sam says NNP or no new people. Joel steps in pet poop so they go to the hardware store to find something to get rid of the smell. They ask Steve for advice. Later, Sam begins cleaning out the barn. Tricia helps Shannon (Kailey Albus) pack her stuff for college. Once Tricia takes one last picture of her, Shannon asks her to send it to dad. Tricia doesn’t seem happy about it, but she sends it to him anyway.

Sam calls Joel and says she is getting ready for the renters. She admits it feels weird to be there with all of his stuff. Sam is glad he went because she knows it would’ve broken his heart to clean out the barn. She didn’t know it would break hers. Sam feels like she is packing up his whole life and it sucks. Joel offers to bring alcohol, but Sam says no. He tells her that she is doing good by him. Tricia notices a Charity Cooper Real Estate Group sign in front of the house. She gets angry. Sam visits Mary Jo (Jane Brody) who already has a reputation among the staff.

Sam tells her that dad wanted to make sure she had plenty of clean underwear. Mary claims he burned her house down, but Sam says he didn’t. Sam learns she has been smoking and there is nothing they can do about it. As Sam leaves, she gets a call from Tricia inviting her and Joel over for dinner. Once they arrive and go inside, Tricia tells Joel that he almost makes Sum fun. She reveals he wasn’t even there. Joel thinks she should be proud of herself for raising a really wonderful young woman. Tricia has never been alone so she is worried she’ll be alone forever now. She never thought she’d end up like this.

Joel reminds her she could get back together with Rick, but Tricia isn’t interested in that either. She tells them how she tried to cheat with Coop although he turned her down. Tricia demonstrates the pencil test for Joel before they make him tell her that she has great breasts. Later, Sam and Joel begin drinking. As they drink, they laugh about Tricia and talk about Sam’s mother. She admits she wouldn’t visit her if it weren’t for her father. Joel suggests he could go with her the next time. Fred Rococo (Murray Hill) visits them by visiting. Fred reveals that Sam’s father called.

Fred was getting cold and bored in Wisconsin anyway. Sam doesn’t understand why he’d call Fred, but he wouldn’t call his own daughters. Fred suggests he doesn’t want them to think he is being overbearing or micromanaging. Fred says nine months was enough and the research can be finished there. Sam’s dad mentioned that MJ had a stroke. Sam explains why he is on a boat with his brother in Corpus Christi. Fred gives them cheese curds. Later, Sam and Joel text and discuss their active hours. Joel gets mad that they gave him two stars and claim he has non-absorptive bath towels. He complains that their dog crapped all over his house. They say goodnight as the episode ends.

Somebody Somewhere Review

The opening episode of the second season of Somebody Somewhere fell in line with last season’s finale in terms of story continuation. Fans of the first season will enjoy this episode because the comedy style remains and the characters haven’t changed much. In particular, I like the scenery and soundtrack that help make the show so moody at times.

In many cases, the characterless scenes that only spotlight the scenery with the moody tunes achieve this the best. At some point, the series will have to turn the corner and get to the meat of the story considering the humor may wear out its welcome. It is understandable why the series is hesitant to dive into the emotional stuff without the shield of humor since many viewers complain about bleak content.

However, Somebody Somewhere is at its best when it gets serious and deals with the drama straight on. Those scenes can be truly profound while the humor is often a bit cringe. As the season progresses, it would be nice to see the show get a little more serious. The opening episode scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of Somebody Somewhere are available on Reel Mockery here.
