The episode begins with Soul (Paul Ready) recalling his eating the heart of a Fairborn Witch, Bjorn (Fehinti Balogun). A call from Aoife (Shereen Martin) jars him back to reality. Jessica (Isobel Jesper Jones) blurts out they’re near the Ozanne territory while he remains quiet. Aoife asks what happened to Nathan Byrne (Jay Lycurgo). Soul admits to losing track of him. After learning Soul only has eight Fairborn Witches left, she warns him, the Blood Witches will come for them. He assures her, the Blood Witches are no longer a concern before daring Marcus Edge to come for him. She informs him that Wolfhagen is stocked with supplies and weapons.

Disconnecting the call, Soul asks Jessica if she’s questioning his power against Marcus. After a brief flashback of Annalise’s power, she admits to believing he’ll be ready.

Kieran (Hector Hewer) asks where Bjorn, Max (Louis Walwyn), and Henri (Eric Godon) are being held. After telling him, Bjorn is alive in one of the sheds, she says they killed Henri when he tried to flee. She claims to have shapeshifted into Henry in hopes Max could complete his Giving Ceremony which failed. He tells her that he’s confused as to why they’re still there. She informs him of Soul’s orders to track Annalise before kissing him. He pulls back when he realizes she’s shapeshifted into Annalise.

Lying side-by-side, holding hands, Nathan wakes up to Gabriel’s heartbeat. Gabriel informs him that Annalise and Ceelia left to find Soul. Nathan asks why he never woke him up. Gabriel reminds him of his quickly approaching Giving Ceremony and what happens to witches when they don’t complete theirs.

Ceelia tells Annalise that she’ll do whatever it takes to get Soul back to the Fairborn Council. Annalise admits to feeling like she’s losing Nathan who may not be hers to lose. Ceelia says her height gave her insecurities that she eventually overcame.

Kieran tracks Annalise along the river.

Nathan tells Gabriel his “Lord of the Rings theory.

Nicky (Emilie Largier), Hugo (Joey Akubeze), and Bernard (David Isiguzo) cautiously approach Le Camp. They fire an arrow into a Le Camp member previously frozen by Bjorn. Alice (Severine Howell-Meri) utilizes her power to wake Bjorn’s spirit that tells her the shadows said “Wolfhagen.”

Gabriel escorts Nathan to a warehouse with a living area. He makes a potion that allows them to go anywhere of their choosing when they hear a noise below. Grabbing a large tool, Nathan hits Kieran on the head as Gabriel says he isn’t being attacked. Kieran warns them that Jessica is out to harm Annalise before saying, “Don’t go.” Gabriel asks where shouldn’t they go. After saying, “Wolf, I only wanted to do something good” before passing. Nathan breaks down when he realizes what he’d done. Gabriel questions if the “wolf” was Marcus. Nathan assures him there is no connection.

Ceelia forces a driver (Veronique Sevegrand) to get out of their car. The driver reminds her that she’s stealing. Annalise admits to feeling guilty about the car. Handing over a cellphone, Ceelia tells her to get Soul’s location.

Soul stands nearby while Teemu (Luke Polie) refills the gas tanks. Jessica shapeshifts into Soul before answering Annalise’s call. Annalise says she’s alone. Jessica suggests they meet at Wolfhagen later today. When Soul opens the door, she abruptly ends the call without saying anything.

Nathan informs Gabriel that the Peace Massacre took place at Wolfhagen. After reminding him of his Giving Day, day after tomorrow, Gabriel says they’re going to meet Mercury (Roisin Murphy) so he can get his blood.

Gabriel and Nathan look down at the cut from the rooftop. When Nathan is reluctant to jump, Gabriel says, “Sometimes the bad times are the good times” before they kiss. Nathan tells him that he’s sorry before giving him a gentle shove. Landing in the snow, Gabriel describes him as a “stupid idiot.” N

Nathan utilizes Gabriel’s potion to reach Wolfhagen. After hearing a heartbeat, he hides behind a tree. Ella (Natalie Kimmerling) orders the group to stop when she hears a heartbeat. Nathan watches as the group continues on.

Ceelia drives down the road when they’re hit by arrows. Annalise becomes frantic as two witches pull Ceelia out of the car. Annalise floors the accelerator while Ceelia fights off her attackers. She utilizes her power to free a Blood Witch (Maks Borzemski) as another one approaches. The victor, Ceelia curses Robin Hood before heading down the road.

Soul arrives as Wolfhagen.

Standing in front of a home, Gabriel says, “Speech is silver, silence is golden” to unlock the door. He makes his way to a room filled with vials of blood. Approaching from behind, Mercury asks if he was going to say hello. He informs her that Nathan went to Wolfhagen. She says he’s attracted to Nathan before warning him of trouble at Wolfhagen.

Maeve (Alice Hewkin) utilizes her power to demonstrate Marcus attacking Fairborn Witches at Wolfhagen. Aoife can be heard talking to Soul from her cellphone. Someone suggests they leave. When Soul demands silence, blood drips from the ceiling and the lights go out.

Gabriel assures Mercury that he’ll bring Nathan to her if she gives him the blood. Putting the vial of blood in his hand, she asks if it’s love before erasing his memory. He asks what was he doing. She tells him that he was going to bed. He takes a seat on the bed before pulling out his book.

Nathan stares at Wolfhagen when Nicky approaches with her gun drawn.

When Annalise arrives at Wolfhagen, Soul demands to know why she’s there. She reminds him that he asked her to come. He tells her that she shouldn’t be there when they hear a howl.

Nicky warns the others that Marcus’s there.

Jessica smirks while watching Annalise from behind as the episode comes to an end.

 

The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself Synopsis

Jessica lied to Kieran about Bjorn being alive and her shapeshifting into Henri to try to help Max complete his Giving Ceremony. He pulled back when she shapeshifted into Annalise while they were kissing.

Nathan was none too thrilled by Annalise’s decision to accompany Ceelia in a search for Soul. Gabriel convinced him to not go after her.

Nicky found Bjorn’s body in a shed at Le Camp. Alice woke his spirit to discover the Fairborn Witches left for Wolfhagen.

Nathan fatally injured Kieran for what he believed was protecting Gabriel. He warned them against going to “Wolf” and of Jessica’s plan to hurt Annalise.

Jessica shapeshifted into Soul to convince Annalise to go to Wolfhagen.

Gabriel and Nathan reach a cut to Mercury. Nathan convinced Gabriel that he was going to jump but shoved him in instead. He takes off to find Wolfagen while Gabriel heads to Mercury’s.

Annalise and Ceelia are separated following an attack by several witches.

Mercury caught Gabriel trying to take a vial of blood without her knowledge. Mercury detected his feelings for Nathan before erasing his memory.

Soul utilized Mauve’s power to find out that Marcus possibly killed Aoife and other Fairborn Witches at Wolfhagen.

Nathan is outside Wolfhagen when he’s captured by Nicky. Annalise is inside with Jessica and Soul.

 

The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself Review

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the show but when a season has too many episodes, it gets old pretty quickly. Starting with the pilot, nearly every scene was stuffed with filler, all unnecessary, just to accomplish an 8-part season.

It seems as if they couldn’t choose between Nathan and Annalise or Nathan and Gabriel. I’m confused as to why they chose both Annalise and Gabriel to have feelings for Nathan. As far as Nathan goes, his feelings are difficult to interpret.
