As the 6th episode begins, Massimo Ruggero (Alessandro Borghi) talks about his mind racing at night as he tries to find a way out of the darkness. Sofia Flores (Laia Costa) is next to him sleeping in bed. Massimo realizes that all of the roads he can follow will lead to the same place. Sofia wakes up and recalls her night with Massimo who is frantically searching for coffee. She helps him before he admits she was right about Dominic since he had one of his lawyers get Carrie out of prison. He says Dominic claimed he was protecting him. Sofia wonders if he believes that before asking if he murdered Edward. Massimo is warned he needs to watch his back because they could be following him.

He says he needs to get Ed’s notes because they are the only way they can find out why Ed was killed. He leaves and we watch a news report about the arrest of Kveku Adoboli who is being called a rogue trader. After the intro, Oliver Harris (Malachi Kirby) talks to his lady friend about his little brother picking a school. She says he is spending a lot of money lately, but Oliver believes it is worth it for his brother. While she uses a nearby ATM, Oliver watches the news report about the rogue trader. As Massimo leaves, he is watched and he realizes it. When Oliver makes it to work, he tries to scan his card but it is rejected. A security officer tells Oliver to come with him. As they walk along, Oliver looks at a computer screen and sees that his access was denied.

He is led to a room where Eleanor (Pai Mechler) and Kalim (Paul Chowdhry) are being held. As Massimo arrives at the parking garage, Oliver admits he is worried because they did the same thing as the rogue trader who got busted. Alex Vance (Chris Reilly) approaches Massimo while the others try to figure out what is going on. When Massimo joins them, they try to guess why they’ve been brought there. Massimo explains it was a trap and they fell for it. They’re taken to another room where they’re joined by Paul (Harry Michell), Dominic (Patrick Dempsey), and Chris (Tom McKay). Dominic explains that Chris is going to serve as his deputy CEO and Paul will be the new head of trading. The others are upset with the decision, but Oliver is just surprised they’re not being sacked. Massimo talks to Dominic in private and contemplates quitting but he is warned that he’ll be prosecuted if he does.

Dominic says Massimo left him no choice since he pulled one stunt after another and he wants him to go out there and make some money. He tells Massimo he’ll get his job back with him. Meanwhile, Sofia sneaks into a church and goes into the vault downstairs where she meets Daniel Duval (Lars Mikkelsen). She soon learns that she was recorded having sex with Massimo and Daniel warns her not to turn her computer on when she is doing something like that. Daniel wants to reel Massimo in now that he trusts Sofia, but she says they should give him what he wants first. Paul tells Massimo he didn’t want to take his job but it was the only way he could get his job back. Paul tries to smooth things over but Massimo isn’t having it. Eleanor and Kalim wonder if they should wait.

Oliver gets up and rushes over to Massimo to tell him he is worried that they’ll turn him in. Oliver knows he should’ve thought about that before but he is under a lot of pressure with his little brother changing schools. Massimo tells him how much he really cares about his brother so Oliver decides it is best to return to work. Then, we see a television report about Duval being charged with insider trading and other things. Massimo gets a message from Sofia and agrees to meet her tonight. He calls Terence (Nick Cornwall) to tell him he has another job for him. He wants to learn everything he can about Sofia Flores. We jump forward to that night and Massimo gets a visit from Nina (Kasia Smutniak) while preparing for Sofia’s arrival. She explains she wanted to see him because the war between them needs to end. Massimo believes she is being manipulated like Dom manipulated everyone.

Nina confesses she is the one who convinced Carrie to leave him. Carrie left because she knew it was better for Max to stay with Dominic and Nina encourages him to move forward. That night, Oliver gets upset when searching for a new job online. He goes out and finds his brother drinking with friends. Sofia meets with Max and tells him that her boss could likely get Ed’s files but he wants Max to become his eyes and ears inside NYL. Dom quickly thinks it over and says he’ll do it but he wants to meet Duval face to face. He says he is going to trust the man with his life so he needs to know who he is dealing with. Massimo goes to Vicky who has been demoted and reassigned because of him and his case. He apologizes before admitting Ed didn’t kill himself.

He thinks she can help him find out who did it and he wants her to help him get the notes. He offers to give her Daniel Duval if she gives him the papers. She is surprised that Max is willing to stab Daniel’s associate in the back to get the files. He gets a call from Sofia confirming Duval has agreed to meet him. Sofia says she’ll call him tonight with a time and place. Before the call ends, they agree that they’re officially on the same side now. Meanwhile, Oliver learns that Paul has assigned Kalim to the freezer. Eleanor isn’t happy with her placement either and that worries Oliver since he hasn’t been assigned anywhere yet. Oliver is told to come to Dominic’s office right away. When he enters, he hears Dominic talking about the American dollar and the Euro.

Dominic is looking for answers and he says this is Oliver’s opportunity to show why Massimo thinks he is such a hotshot. He looks at the stuff on the board and goes to work. He refers to the countries as pigs and says they have disgusting amounts of debt and sloppy public accounts. Paul doesn’t understand but Dominic sees something there so he asks Oliver to get Paul an internal report on the Pigs. Terence calls Max and arranges a meeting while Vicky goes to the station to pick up the evidence. She talks to Sam and tries to get him to show her the paperwork again. Max learns that Flores is being monitored by Interpol due to her involvement with Subterrania. Terence starts at the beginning and tells Max about Sofia’s parents being killed in a car accident when she was only seven. She was cared for by her brother Ramiro until 2001 when he went bankrupt and killed himself.

She lived on the street and did what she needed to get by. She met Daniel Duval who was an economist at the time and lost his marriage and tenure at an Ivy League college. She was only 16 or 17 but Terence isn’t sure if he slept with her. Daniel paid for her to go to college. Then, they started targeting bankers and hedge fund managers through Subterrania. Max takes the evidence before Oliver hangs his report to Paul who invites him out for a drink. Max tells Eleanor to keep shorting the Spanish banks and he learns about Kalim being in the freezer. When Kalim meets with Max, he is told to pull some old files that they have digitized. Max wants the files about the Banco de Rosa failure in 2001. Kalim remembers it and says it was one of the three that came down on March 7, 2001. Kalim is surprised Max doesn’t remember since they bought all of the non-performing assets of Banco de Rosa and it was Max’s idea.

Kalim says it destroyed all the borrowers but that happens and it was beautiful. They made a lot of money and Max got a Porsche from Dom as a bonus. Eleanor pulls Kalim away for a drink. Oliver hangs out with Paul and learns about his woman Emma. Oliver tells Paul about his girl Latoya. Paul tells him he isn’t in the clear yet before he goes to the bathroom. Oliver approaches Eleanor and Kalim who believe he is brown-nosing the new boss. They remind him he wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for Massimo. Oliver tells them Max would still have a job if it wasn’t for them. Oliver notices Paul talking to another man before we rejoin Max as he goes through the old paperwork. He gets a message so he calls Vicky and tells her they have a time and place. That night, Max meets with Vicky and her former partner DS Winks. Massimo is told he is going to help bring down two criminals since his girlfriend is an accessory for hiding Daniel.

When he steps away, Vicky confirms she got the case file. She isn’t sure whether she’ll give it to him yet though. Sofia contacts Max and tells him where to meet and he begins having second thoughts. They move to the Bankside Pier before Massimo changes his mind and runs from them. Max loses them before meeting with Sofia and telling her she needs to get out of there because the police are coming. He tells her that they were going to give him the files in exchange for Duval. He apologizes but she isn’t happy about it. When the detectives arrive, Max apologizes and says they didn’t show up. He says he needs the documents but Vicky isn’t giving them to him. When Max returns to his flat, Duval is waiting for him.

Daniel tells him about his work as an economist. He goes over his past actions and says he was an economic hitman. He killed people without touching a gun and he thinks Massimo has killed people as well including Sofia’s brother. Daniel says the bubble is going to explore sooner than he thinks and he wants to be on the right side. Max asks him how many people he had Sofia sleep with for the cause. Daniel believes she slept with Max because she wanted to. Daniel tells Massimo he knows how to get in touch before leaving. Oliver returns home and hears his Pigs theory being talked about on television. Dominic watches the same report. He calls Margaret and tells her she should be watching the news. She has news of her own and it isn’t good. Dominic learns that Standard & Poor’s is going to downgrade US debt and Margaret says they need to move forward with their plan sooner.

Dom says he’ll take care of it. Vicky returns home and finds her window open so she shuts it. She checks her desk and finds the files missing. Sofia arrives at Max’s door seconds later and he is asked why he didn’t go through with it. He says he thinks he still needs her to work for him. She says she took care of the mess before giving Massimo the paperwork he wanted. He learns about Sofia breaking into the detective’s flat to get it.

 

Devils Review

I am not sure Devils is going to be great for everyone since it is a bit confusing at times. I don’t think it goes into enough depth for all viewers to understand exactly what is happening. Although I watch it slower than everyone else, I still don’t understand everything either. Nevertheless, it is starting to grow on me.

I like the fact that the show taps into real-life events. That makes it more interesting even though it barely touches on these things most of the time. It isn’t my favorite show but I find it more likable with each episode. I am eager to find out what Massimo will discover from Ed’s files and how that relates to Dominic. We’re getting closer to the finale so something big has to happen soon.
