As the episode begins, we’re introduced to Zoe Walker (Laura Haddock). She speaks about the weather in Almeria and how it almost never rains there. She says it is a desert in Spain and we see that this led to the discovery of a corpse. Zoe was only a kid when her brother disappeared but she is confident that she will find out the truth at some point. Inspector Juan Miguel Fonseca meets with Mike (Barry Ward) and his wife Zoe at the scene of the discovery. They learn that the location used to be used to film spaghetti westerns. They are told that the body has been mummified but a tattoo is visible and it matches the one Axel (Tom Rhys Harries) had. Zoe and the others wonder if Axel made it into Ibiza before Mike asks what they should do next.
Zoe spots her brother’s body and moves in closer for a better look. In a flashback, we see the day Axel left his sister at home but she tells Mike that he didn’t leave and give up on her. After the intro, we’re introduced to Boxer (Nuno Lopes) who is hanging out at a club. He tells Bruno that he needs to stop messing around while they check out the latest body paint. Boxer receives a call and is asked about Axel. Seconds later, we see two women practicing synchronized swimming. Meanwhile Oriol Calafat (Juan Diego Botto) practices his speech in front of his family. His father, Andreu (Pedro Casablanc), jokes about it. They chat about trying to convince the investors to get involved with their business. Kika joins in as well.
Andreu leaves and takes his dog for a walk. Then, Kika tells her husband that the clubs must be clean until everything is signed. Andreu runs into Boxer outside and they discuss the discovery of the mummified body in Almeria. Andreu wonders why they would think it is Axel and he is told about the tattoo with Kika’s name. Next, Zoe and her husband continue chatting with the investigator. He explains it is important to know when Axel died first and that murders cannot be prosecuted after two years. Zoe is told that she’ll have to accept what the investigator tells her but she isn’t willing to accept that. Then, we see Zoe pretending she is willing to let it go and that the killer should coming out of hiding. After that, the investigator says they’ll need to take a DNA test first.
Zoe goes outside and asks a man to take her to Ibiza. Mike finds out what she is going to do and that surprises him. He says he doesn’t want to let the ghost of Axel destroy her once again but she promises that she will be okay. Zoe leaves with the trucker and they head for Ibiza moments later. In another flashback, we see Axel arrive with his friends Anna, Marcus, and Dave. Axel speaks about the location and how much he loves it. Zoe arrives at her destination and begins looking around. We see two men dumping drugs into the water before logging the coordinates. Two men retrieve the drugs shortly after that. We join Marcus (Daniel Mays) who happily cruises down the road while singing to music. Marcus arrives and meets with three other guys.
They chat about cleaning their backsides before Oriol joins them. He tells the men that the clubs need to stay clean for the time being and they’re not happy about that. He is warned that he might get his casino but he will lose his clubs. Then, we see a woman dealing with some type of health issue. Conchita speaks with the woman before walking with a priest. She tells Rafael that she doesn’t care what priests do in their spare time. He tells her that he will not take God’s name in vain just to suit her business. Moments later, Zoe visits the club where Marcus will be working as a DJ but he isn’t there. She tries to get information about him and where he lives. Marcus cruises down the road with his children.
They chat about Matilda living with her mother and other things. Marcus learns that his ex-wife is running parties right now. We jump over to her and find out that she is running orgy parties. She speaks with a newcomer and tries to calm her nerves. After that, Oriol and his mother speak with the guests. He promises that Andreu will be joining them soon. However, he is busy speaking with Boxer about movies and their relationship. Andreu explains that he has asked Boxer several times but he wants to ask again. He asks if he killed Axel. Boxer takes off his glasses and denies it. Andreu wonders who buried someone his land to mess with him.
Oriol speaks with his mother and the others about the casino. Andreu interrupts when he calls and asks his son if he killed Axel. Then, he asks Conchita if she had something to do with the murder. When those calls end, Andreu tells Boxer that he needs to find out who killed the boy. Marcus makes it back home and speaks with a friend. The guy is worried that Marcus is going to screw him over. Marcus says he has problems too and that includes his mortgage. Marcus tries to convince his friend to take the drugs back but he won’t. Marcus gets stuck with the drugs. The container has a hole in its so the drugs begin leaking all over the ground. He tries to hide it when Zoe arrives outside. His kids leave and he speaks with Zoe in private.
Marcus tells her that everything is great since he is a 44-year-old DJ in Ibiza. They chat about old times while Marcus’s dog gets high on the drugs he finds on the ground. Zoe mentioned Axel and we see a party from the past. Marcus and Zoe hang out with Axel and the others. Marcus believes good times are always behind you. Then, Zoe asks about David but Marcus doesn’t believe she would recognize him. He offers to let her crash there for the night as well. That night, Anna (Angela Griffin) hosts her orgy party and Oriol shows up. Meanwhile, Zoe asks Marcus about the last time they spoke about 20 years ago and Axel had just called. Marcus believed he was in India but he wasn’t. Marcus told her that her brother was even though he was likely already dead at that time.
Zoe wonders if Marcus knew he was already dead but he denies it. He has to clean up the drugs when he finds out his dog has been taking them. Boxer arrives seconds later. They chat about Marcus’s upcoming performance and Boxer throws his beer into the pool. Boxer gets him with a net and demands to know who killed Axel while Zoe listens from a distance. Zoe grabs a knife while Marcus fights for his life. She grabs a harpoon gun and tells Boxer to get Marcus out of the water. Then, we see Zoe in a hospital. She sits in a wheelchair and speaks with Joanna on the phone. She tells Joanna about shooting someone with a harpoon and that she lost Axel all over again. Again, she says he didn’t abandon her.
Oriol joins the sex party. The following day, Rafael blesses the land. Andreu drives in a vehicle and worries about his dog who seems to have gotten sick. Zoe attends the party at the club while Oriol is introduced to the new girl at the sex orgy. Marcus and Boxer meet with Zoe and give the harpoon back to her. Kika gets a call from her father who says King has died and that he needs her. During the pasty, Zoe believes she sees Axel before the episode ends.
White Lines Review
I had to rush this recap a bit because I got so busy with work and other things. Nevertheless, I was hoping for more from White Lines. I really couldn’t get into it. I found it difficult to follow and felt it was all over the place at times. I wish it would’ve slowed down a bit and I felt the translated subtitles were difficult to read. Maybe it was just Netflix but the subtitles were too small making them nearly impossible to read from a distance.
The show wasn’t awful but it wasn’t spectacular either. Like many other shows, I don’t feel the need to watch the rest. There was nothing captivating enough to draw me back in for another episode. I’ll likely watch the others but I won’t rush to do so. The opening episode scores a 6.5 out of 10.
