Mark (Craige Els) stirs awake as several of the construction workers race from the concrete complex to check on him. One of the workers notices and appears to be startled by his gun.

DS Kelly Evans (Kayla Meikle) visits Simon’s flat where she runs into Harry White (David Bradley), who doesn’t even acknowledge her existence. She soon winds back up at the Trading Post, where she confronts Jordan Franklin (Joe Barber) about his earlier meeting with Simon at the spot. He doesn’t give her anything and reminds her that he’s underage and can’t be questioned without his guardian present.

Paul Franklin (Jonas Armstrong) arrives at the construction trailer looking for Mark at the same time Beth and Simon make it to the police station with Sophie. After a quick debate and Beth’s suggestion, they decide it’s best to speak with an attorney before speaking with the cops. This leads them to a nearby park where Simon attempts but fails to schedule a meeting with an attorney. Simon nearly has a panic attack when he spots a car similar to Paul’s entering the park.

In a bit of panic himself, Jordan returns home to count his take from Simon. He’s interrupted and nearly caught by Paul. Paul becomes suspicious when Jordan asks about Mark and the angry as he refuses to share more. Paul’s attention soon turns to his phone when he receives a call from an associate, requesting a meeting. At the meeting, Paul not only learns that Mark is in the hospital under police custody, but Kevin apparently saw him with Simon and Jordan.

Simon and Beth decide to spend the night in a motel with Sophie, which later proves fortuitous when Paul has their home staked out. Before that, Paul decides to see Mark’s situation for himself but is unsuccessful due to police presence. Still at home, Jordan gets high and posts it all over social media but is caught by Paul. This leads to Jordan unveiling the truth about Simon.

Simon continues to have nightmares before Beth wakes him to update him on Mark’s condition, which only turns out to be two broken ribs. They further discuss their plan over expensively awful hotel wine, but nothing is definitively decided.

Jordan and Paul are still at home when Paul learns from his plant that Simon isn’t home. After hanging up with his man, Paul basically accosts Jordan while trying to put the pieces together from the night of the incident. Their dispute gets pretty emotional but Paul appears most upset that Simon’s attacking Jordan makes him look weak.

Harry Coma Channel 5

Awake by himself at the hotel now, Simon decides to reach out to DS Evans after noticing several of her missed calls. He immediately regrets this and hangs up in the middle of their conversation. Harry is back on neighborhood watch, as he confronts Paul’s man staked outside Simon’s house and threatens to call the cops on him. Although the man intimidates him into running away, Evans later learns about the report and pays a visit to his house.

When Simon arrives back in the motel room, he finds Sophie in the middle of an asthma attack, possibly brought on by an allergy to the pillows or sheets. After debating their options, Simon remembers the spare inhaler in Sophie’s room. Evans has arrived at Harry’s flat to discover that Paul’s man is no longer outside. Spotting a kitchen knife in plain sight inside his flat appears to confirm her suspicions that Harry is not only senile but a possible danger. When asked to put the knife away, he does but becomes upset and blames its presence on the police’s inability to police the neighborhood. This eventually leads him into a rant that reveals Simon as Jordan’s attacker.

Simon arrives just as Evans learns of his role in the attack. Although he walks to her car and reports the discovery, she doesn’t see him. Simon eventually makes his way inside the house and retrieves the inhaler but Paul and his associate arrive before he makes his escape. Simon hides under the bed while they search the house. Harry’s banging and threats to call the police interrupt their search but lead to Paul’s discovery of the hotel sheath used to carry the keycard for Simon’s room. Paul visits the hotel while his man stays behind and Harry makes another report to the police.

Paul Coma Channel 5

Sophie’s condition has worsened to the point where Beth begins knocking on doors and asking guests for an inhaler. She gets lucky but that luck appears to run out when she realizes Paul has shown up outside her room. Paul uses the card sheath to get a copy of the room key but finds the room empty. Paul soon calls his man away from the house to join the search at the hotel.

Simon’s call to Beth alerts him of Paul’s presence at the hotel as well as her and Sophie’s successful escape through the rear entrance. Much to Simon’s surprise, he finds Jordan waiting on him outside and demands an apology for almost killing him. Simon’s refusal leads to Jordan knocking him on the ground and beating him in the face. After several glancing blows, Jordan grimaces in pain. It appears Harry has stabbed him with the kitchen knife. Harry tells Simon to go and he thinks about it but turns back around and tells Harry to call an ambulance. Simon immediately applies pressure to the wound and calms Jordan to slow his heart rate.

As Jordan calms, the footage seemingly skips ahead several hours where Evans and the police are now on the scene. Simon admits to hitting Jordan but refuses to share more until he knows that his family is safe. As the footage scrolls forward, Simon is arrested and Jordan is revealed to have survived the attack. He’s also apparently given a statement to the police about the night of the initial attack. During a later interrogation, it’s revealed that he claimed to have been attacked by a young man that he’s never seen before. Evans pushes Simon for the truth and even mentions the safety of his family, but Simon’s only words are, “No comment.”

Simon leaves a voice message for Beth as soon as he’s released. As he ends the connection, Paul pulls up and demands he take a ride with him. Their trip leads them to a similar-looking construction site from the opening scene. Simon begs for his life as Paul remains stoic while also leading him to what appears to be an isolated section. The scene plays out like Paul shoots Simon but immediately reveals that he just fired over his head. He lets Simon leave but warns him that he better never see him again. Paul is later shown at home where he watches old home videos of Jordan and Danny. Jordan’s later release from the hospital this time isn’t so public.

The episode ends with Simon taking one last, long look at his flat. The ‘for sale’ sign is now covered with a yellow ‘sold’ sign.

Coma Review

As was the case throughout the series, I was blown away by the finale. Blown away might be a bit of a stretch because it’s not like this type of ending wasn’t suspected. I would have probably been more surprised had it ended differently. I don’t always consider myself a sap for the happy ending, but it fits in this case. Above all, I was surprised by the performances of the lead roles. Jason Watkins, Joe Barber, and Paul Jonas Armstrong’s performances were on point throughout the whole series.

I also feel that the shorter run times along with the 4-episode miniseries atmosphere played in the series’ favor. A new episode every night didn’t hurt either. Although Netflix, Hulu, and other major streamers have started releasing entire seasons at once, I feel that the night release was far more effective here. All in all, everything miraculously came together for the show.

My biggest complaint would be that some of the scenarios, such as Beth’s discovery of the inhaler or Paul’s discovery of Simon’s hotel room, felt a bit ‘too convenient.’ I would have also appreciated a more succinct resolution to Simon and Jimmy’s relationship as well as Simon and Harry’s. Compared to the other dribble being released today, Coma is a must-watch! This episode easily deserves a 6 out of 10.

A cautionary tale I guess. I mean know your rights. Jordan was menacing, threatening, did a shoulder chuck, broke windows on his car and threatened his family. At the very least Simon could’ve just said that Jordan swung at him first but a real case could be made in Simon’s defense either way. Seems much easier than some convoluted cover-up. Which brings me to the second moral, which is never say peep to cops without a solicitor present because… corroborating testimony. Simon almost eff’d that one up but was able to recover when interviewed.

Ok…. all is well that ends well and only the Harry Potter guy goes to jail but he’ll probably beat the rap due to the fact he is batshite crazy. Maybe they do a series two where Simon tangles with some gang bangers or drug guys down in Florida.

It was a good show, I really enjoyed it. Bravo Channel 5.

lol yep. I like the UK shows where the accused never talk to the police and just keep saying “no comment” repeatedly lol. He finally got it right but it took a while to get there.

Too many cases of innocent people getting themselves locked away for talking. I’d watch a series two. I always like Jason Watkins and Jonas Armstrong too. Seems Watkins is becoming a regular on Channel 5.
