Outlaw King is a 2018 historical drama starring Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce. The Scottish warrior declares himself the Scottish king and goes to war with the English army. Along the way, Robert Bruce loses his brother. His wife and daughter are kidnapped. Nevertheless, he continues fighting in an attempt to ensure an independent Scotland.
Despite numerous setbacks, Robert continues to fight for his country. He is also shunned by other Scottish royalty. In the end, the King of the Scots manages to fulfill his goals. The story is pretty interesting in all regards. It is a true underdog story of the Scottish people standing up to the great English army.
The acting is pretty good. Sadly, the show’s biggest talents are killed early on. Chris Pine is awkward at times, but he manages to pull it off in the end. The first twenty minutes or so are downright boring. It feels like the movie is going to go nowhere. It picks up quickly when the action begins. I would have like to have seen more of Callan Mulvey and James Cosmo.
Nevertheless, they weren’t meant to be. The movie definitely has a good cast. It is riddled by poor camera work though. At times, I felt like vomiting because the camera wouldn’t stop moving. The camera work was overdone. It would have been much better if the camera would have just sat still for a few minutes. Outlaw King has a 7 out of 10 on IMDB and that is probably accurate.
It isn’t terrible, but much of the movie feels pointless. It only gets good when Robert Bruce finally manages to outsmart his opponent. After that, it is a pretty good roller coaster ride. Skip the first 30 minutes or so and you’ll love Outlaw King. Watch it all and you might turn it off after half an hour. The movie scores a 7 out of 10.
