Carpe Diem – As this episode of When Calls The Heart begins, Elizabeth Thornton (Erin Krakow) says the people of Hope Valley know how to come together regardless of the challenge. Due to financial difficulties, Florence, Molly, and Minnie started a swap meet. Rosemary Coulter (Pascale Hutton) urges Lee to hire everyone he could from the oil company. Even though she is a few weeks from giving birth, she wouldn’t let anything stop her from helping. Elizabeth reveals that she and Lucas have started planning for a Fall wedding. Lucas (Chris McNally) helps out the shop by buying beets even though Gustave won’t cook with them. Elizabeth is shocked by how far they’ve come in a few months.
Lucas reminds her there is more to life than work. He has to get back to something that will be a surprise. After the intro, Elizabeth teaches the students about poetry. Cooper and Toby sneak into the class only for Elizabeth to notice. Fiona (Kayla Wallace) tells Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry) that they’re moving in above the café. She asks if he has worked out things with Mei (Amanda Wong). Once he says they did, she questions why he can’t work things out with Faith. Fiona recommends talking and clearing the air. Allie (Jaeda Lily Miller) tells her dad that conversation was awkward.
Henry Gowen (Martin Cummins) returns to his cell to follow the terms of his probation. Bill Avery (Jack Wagner) returns from Union City to say the court has agreed to a pre-trial hearing there in town. Grant has to sign for a drop-off which turns out to be a dog named Scout. The dog may have been cut from the training program. Bill asks Henry how long he is going to keep pretending everything is okay. Although Henry thinks everything is fine, he is warned that he is looking at six years in prison. Bill coughs although the doctor says he is as right as rain. Joseph Canfield (Viv Leacock) tells Lee that they’re going to run out of place for lumber if they keep chopping it.
Lee (Kavan Smith) talks about possible buyers. Brett gives Lee a sweater the missus made for the baby. Robert takes Sarah’s lunch to Elizabeth because she forgot it earlier. Elizabeth learns that his mom and dad got an offer on the farm. He believes he is going to be moving to Cape Fullerton. Sarah is going to be very upset since she likes coming to school. Lucas goes to Ned so he can place an order. He also asks Minnie for a favor. Lucas tells Ned he can spread the word that everyone is invited to the saloon tomorrow evening. Nathan soon learns that Scout won’t obey his commands. When Allie enters, Nathan tells her not to get attached to the dog. Faith is glad to see Bill back.
She tells him that the doctor’s office called and said he didn’t show up. Dr. Faith Carter (Andrea Brooks) has been studying cases like his. She asks if he has been getting exercise and fresh air. Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) tells Lee that he is doing the right thing by hiring those men. Lee says he can only make payroll for one month and maybe two. He doesn’t want to jeopardize their future, Rosemary says she only needs him. Elizabeth enters with her article, “A Day in the Life of a Frontier Teacher”. Rosie says she is banking them for after the baby comes. Elizabeth asks Lee if he needs any extra men at the mill because the Wolfs are leaving town.
Lee reveals he offered Richard a job and he turned him down flat. He suggests Richard might come to his sense if he lands a big contract. As Rosemary talks about cutting costs, Elizabeth comes up with an idea. Elizabeth walks outside and speaks to Henry about his hearing. She believes he did the right thing and doesn’t deserve what is happening. Then, she approaches Bill to see if he wants to talk about anything related to Union City. Elizabeth suspects he isn’t telling her everything. Rosemary and Lee discuss ways to save money including switching to prunes. Elizabeth brings Rosemary the maternity clothes. She agrees to come back in the morning and take any Rosemary can’t use.
Rosemary says she’ll be keeping them before Elizabeth leaves. Once she is gone, Rosemary tells Lee that she needs things with more flare. Elizabeth asks Lucas if he’d like to go over some of the items on their wedding to-do list. She suggests they could just elope, but Lucas doesn’t want to deprive themselves or his parents of a wedding. Minnie works to help Lucas with the secret. She won’t tell the others what is going on. Elizabeth wonders why some of the kids showed up to school wet again. Lucas joins Lee who is busy trying to convince a buyer to choose his mill. After the call, Lee tells Lucas he believes he is starting to wear the guy down.
Lucas is going to need a friend with him to make sure he doesn’t faint at the altar. Lee says he’d be honored to be his best man. Allie asks Elizabeth if she’d be willing to look at a poem she wrote. Elizabeth says it is good so she wouldn’t change a word. She offers to share it without mentioning Allie’s name. In exchange for that, Allie tells Elizabeth that Cooper found a swimming hole and they’ve been going there as often as possible. Moments later, Elizabeth learns about the dog and Nathan’s sketch of him. She finds out that Nathan is trying to convince someone to adopt Scout. She visits Bill to tell him about the swimming hole.
Lee tells Rosemary about Lucas asking him to be his best man. Rosemary says Elizabeth hasn’t asked her to be the matron of honor even though she thought she was her best friend. While Elizabeth and Bill hike to the swimming hole, Lee tries to convince Richard to accept a job at the mill. Lucas learns that Richard wouldn’t accept the offer. Once Bill sees the swimming hole, he wants to declare it off-limits. The kids run in and jump in the water before he can stop them. The water is body temperature and possibly even warmed. Elizabeth tells the kids that they should talk to their parents and get their permission before coming up there.
Then, Bill tells Elizabeth that something is wrong with his lungs and the doctors don’t know anything. She urges him to be open to new experiences. Elizabeth invites Henry to the surprise later. He says he’ll try to be there. Later, Lucas has everyone over for dinner and music. Elizabeth learns that Rosemary dyed one of her dresses purple with Molly’s help. Joseph speaks to the group before they eat. Bill and Henry meet up since they didn’t join the others. Henry recommends he enjoy his time because it is a gift. Nathan tries to speak to Faith, but he is pulled away by Allie. Richard Wolf dances with his daughter. Lee asks Elizabeth if she has picked a maid of honor or matron of honor.
Rosemary soon learns that Elizabeth is picking her. When she gets a chance, Elizabeth reads Allie’s poem to everyone. Richard agrees to begin working for Lee after changing his mind. Fiona tells Faith that it might be time to bury the hatch. She is asked whether she has feelings for Nathan. Faith has them in the meantime. Elizabeth and Lucas talk about having so much to be grateful for. Bill uses the swimming hole in the morning.
When Calls The Heart Review
The opening episode of When Calls The Heart’s 10th season was good so it will most definitely satisfy long-time fans of the series. It does have a soap opera feel, but those who have stuck with the show through ten seasons know what is in store for them. The performances are good enough to bring some authenticity to the characters and their respective stories.
Anyone looking for historical accuracy will probably need to look elsewhere. Instead, When Calls The Heart is about the relationships and the characters getting through their difficulties together. The episode didn’t do a lot in terms of building any emotional connections, but it did build on numerous storylines that should work well in future episodes.
It’ll hopefully be possible to build a legitimate relationship with the characters as the series progresses. Overall, this was a decent episode that did enough to build interest for the rest of the season. It scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of When Calls The Heart can be found on Reel Mockery here.
