When the 5th episode begins, we witness a little bit of Kaz’s (Tammy Macintosh) childhood. She recalls the time with her father. We jump over to the cafeteria, where Lucy (Sally-Anne Upton) has an argument with another inmate about the last piece of bacon. Boomer (Katrina Milosevic) steps in and solves the issue, by eating the last strip. Maxine Conway (Socratis Otto) meets with the doctor and learns about an alternative hormone therapy. He agrees to undergo the treatment, which will require him to switch cellblocks for the time being. Doreen (Shareena Clanton) meets with Nash and Joshua in the visitation room. They chat about their upcoming conjugal and Nash’s job prospects. During the visit, Doreen notices Kim Chang (Ra Chapman) behaving strangely with a visitor. Kaz receives a visit from her mother, who explains that her father passed away three days ago.

They wind up arguing back and forth, until Kaz gets up an leaves angrily. Meanwhile, Vera Bennett (Kate Atkinson) is introduced to the new guard, Jake Steward (Bernard Curry). They chat about Jake’s resume, before Will enters and agrees to show his old friend around. Will also tells Vera about Kaz’s troubles. Doreen pays a visit to Bea in the slot and tells her about the situation on the outside. Bea (Danielle Cormack) instructs Doreen to pass the leadership role to Maxine, until she is released. Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) joins the other inmates outside and watches them intently. Tina (Charlie Tjoe) and Kim Chang abruptly leave their basketball game and this concerns the other women. Meanwhile, Jake and Will tour the prison and chat about Bea. Once they enter the yard, Jake is introduced to Ferguson from a distance and the women quickly harass the fresh meat.

Doreen reports to Maxine, who insists he cannot be temporary Top Dog. Nonetheless, he is eventually coaxed into it and forced to give up his treatment. Maxine’s first move is to confront Tina and Kim. He does so and easily disposes of the drugs. Bridget Westfall (Libby Tanner) confronts Kaz in the hallway and asks about her father’s death. Kaz refuses to speak with Bridget and heads to the bathroom, where she crumbles to the floor and soaks in her own sorrow. She remembers cuddling with her father as a child. Back in the cellblock, Ferguson speaks with Allie (Kate Jenkinson) and learns about Kaz’s father. Allie tells her to never ask about her father. Ferguson heads to the shower and confronts Kaz about Maxine. They argue and Kaz storms out, as she tells Ferguson to leave her alone. Ferguson returns to her cell and contemplates her next move. She speaks with Kaz moments later and apologizes. They both admit they don’t want to chat about their fathers.

The next day, a new prisoner, Tasha Goodwin (Frankie Adams) is brought into the prison. Doreen is ordered to show her around. Ferguson quickly takes note of the woman, Tasha is escorted back to her cellblock, where Boomer tells her to stay away from her belongings. Tasha is introduced to the other girls and told to never push the red alarm button. Jake pays a visit to Vera and tells her that now would be the best time to search the women’s cells, since Bea is out of the way. They do just that and discover drugs in Allie’s. Allie is escorted to the slot, while kicking and screaming about her innocence. She also manages to bite Jake, before she is finally thrown into the slot. Back outside, Ferguson confronts Lucy and Stella (Bessie Holland). She admits she doesn’t want another round and instead offers up younger, fresher meat in the form of Tasha. Bridget visits Allie in her cell and asks her about her addiction. Allie admits she has been clean and uses Bea as inspiration. Bea overhears the conversation, since she is in a neighboring cell.

Nurse Lee Radcliffe (Madeleine Jevic) patches up Jake, before Vera walks in. Vera notices the two flirting and immediately tells the nurse to knock it off with so much makeup. Back in the slot, Allie and Bea chat. Bea tells her it wouldn’t be a good idea to use her as inspiration. They wind up chatting about their histories and Allie’s relationship with Kaz. Jake confronts Will in the locker room and offers for the pair to work out together. Will isn’t interested. Linda Miles (Jacqueline Brennan) enters as Jake exits. She learns from Will that Jake is gay. Meanwhile, Allie and Bea chat throughout the night, as their relationship begins to strengthen. In the morning, Allie is escorted out by Bridget. Next, Doreen and Tasha head towards the showers. Doreen is pulled aside, so Ferguson offers to show Tasha the way to the showers. They make it there and the other women scatter. Lucy and her crew enter and prepare to attack Tasha. A fight ensues and Tasha manages to push the panic button in the nick of time.

Bea is awoken, when Juice is brought in kicking and screaming. Bea asks her what happened and learns about the newbie pushing the button. Bea tells Lucy she isn’t going to do anything, once she is released. Bea insists Maxine will deal with it. In the cafeteria, Maxine, Liz and Boomer chat about their options. Ferguson watches from a distance with a big smile on her face. Meanwhile, Kaz looks at a souvenir of her childhood. Ferguson enters and tells her that Tasha is going to be punished and that they cannot allow that to happen. Ferguson manages to get the point across and convince Kaz to stop Maxine from hurting the girl. Once Ferguson leaves, Kaz reverts back to her childhood and recalls her mother tells her not to say anything about her father’s behavior. Next, Kaz and her women head to the laundry to stop the attack on Tasha.

In the laundry, Doreen attempts to talk Maxine out of her decision. Nonetheless, Maxine instructs the others to bring Tasha forward, after describing her crime. Tasha’s hand is put in the steamer and it begins to close. Maxine stops before it can fry her hand and allows Tasha to escape harsher punishment. This throws a wrench in Ferguson’s plans. Next, Kaz has a flashback of her father killing her horse for speaking too much. In the cafeteria, Maxine tells the others that she messed up by not punishing the girl. However, she is mistaken. The other women begin giving over their dessert as a sign of respect. Vera speaks with Jake in the locker room and is asked to dinner to chat about strategies. Once Jake leaves, Linda tells Vera about his sexual orientation, before Vera storms out. That night, Allie is returned and tries to chat with Bea. Bea quickly shuts her up, since she knows Lucy will hear and use their relationship against her. Also, Ferguson comforts Kaz, as the episode ends.

Wentworth Review

The 5th episode took Bea out of the picture and placed big responsibilities on Maxine. Maxine gave up the opportunity to obtain medical treatment to fill in as top dog. Will this lead to severe consequences? The move also gave Bea the opportunity to build a stronger relationship with Allie. Now that Juice knows about that relationship, it may prove to be more of a hindrance than a benefit. Nonetheless, Maxine managed to make all of the right moves, while thwarting Ferguson’s efforts.

If only Doreen wasn’t such an annoyance, the episode would’ve been nearly perfect. A solid 8.5 out of 10 is deserved. Catch up with previous recaps of Wentworth right now!
