As the second episode of We Might Regret This begins, Freya (Kyla Harris) jokes with her food while out with Abe (Darren Boyd). Jo (Elena Saurel) interrupts and orders for them. Abe and Freya talk about sending Jo somewhere for training. Jo goes to a class being taught by Susan (Lolly Adefope). Poppy (Rana Bader) pretends she’s dizzy so Jo can have her first lesson which she fails. Susan tells everyone not to be a hero and to leave them on the floor until 999 arrives. At home, Freya talks to Ty (Aasiya Shah) about how they left things. Ty believes she’s lonely and unsatisfied so she calls her there. Abe interrupts and tells Freya he’s off to Sydenham to visit Bronco Brian’s Diner. He reveals it’s going under. Freya and Abe talk about her upcoming photo shoot.
Susan warns Jo she’ll leave empty-handed if she doesn’t start showing the process some respect. Abe visits Levi (Edward Bluemel) and Jane (Sally Phillips) to look for an old photograph. Levi asks about Jo and learns she’s still around. Once Abe finds what he’s looking for, he leaves. Ty tells Freya that she really doesn’t need training. Freya arrives for the shoot for Gym Asylum. Will tells her that she’s going to be shooting a golf scene. Freya tells Olyvya (Hanako Footman) and Olivia (Emma Sidi) that she wants to talk about golf. They refuse to change their minds though. Will (Moe Bar-El) says everyone can play golf in their clothes and that’s the point. Will reports back that she hasn’t shaved her legs. Susan and Jo continue arguing during class.
Abe makes it to the restaurant and sits with Brian (Tim Key). Brian knows all about Abe and his past visits. Abe shows him the picture before saying he still comes with his boy every year. Brian claims Netflix is killing him because one visit a year doesn’t cut it. Freya speaks to Bex (Ashley Sherman-Young) who did the swimming shoot. Jo arrives and takes over for Ty. Abe tells Brian what they’d do during the bankruptcy proceedings. Brian believes they’re going under because they’re consistent and people don’t want consistency. He says he doesn’t want his movements tracked so he doesn’t go to America. He also mentions how the local demographics have changed. Jo shows Freya her certificate. Jo received a call from an unknown number before the shooting begins. Brian talks about Brexit being a godsend for them.
Brian tells Abe how the restaurant got started. The unknown number asks Jo why she’s not answering while Freya struggles through the shoot. Jo gives Freya advice so she can complete the shoot. Abe returns and tells Levi and Jane that Brian is a bigot. Abe surprises Levi by showing him the camper he bought him. Levi reminds him he didn’t ask for a food van. Abe claims this is grabbing the bull by the horns. This is his investment in Levi. Jo pushes Freya back and tells her she did great. Freya is still not sure about the proposal. Once they get back, they see Levi’s new food van. Jo learns that Levi has been calling her. She wants to leave only to learn she has to stay with Freya all the time. Levi asks Jo if this is their first day. The next day, the Olivias tell Freya that Gym Asylum is happy with the pictures. They’ve already talked about getting her in again for socials.
Freya is the face of the campaign. She learns they’ve Photoshopped her hands and Ty is also in the pictures. Freya is asked if she’s ready to take over the world.
We Might Regret This Review
It’s hard to know exactly where this episode was going considering how it played out. Based on the synopsis, one would think this would be more about Abe, Freya, and their relationship, but this episode barely touched on that as they went in ludicrously different directions.
As previously mentioned, there are important issues to be covered here. Yet, the series isn’t covering them authentically and instead tries to use humor to downplay the seriousness of everything. The series has consistently taken digs at certain individuals with different beliefs and that was evident here with the Brian character.
That may work well if there was an ounce of authentic humor in those scenes but they’ve missed the target. Not to mention, these silly scenes add nothing to the overall story. It’s hard to know exactly where this is going, but it seems to be floating in outer space with no direction. A legitimate comedy romance with more emphasis on Freya’s unique struggles could’ve been so much more effective.
Instead, we’re getting repetitive pee jokes, worn-out bigot jokes, and so on. It doesn’t even begin to skim the surface of the possibilities. The episode scores a 4.5 out of 10.
