uwantme2killhim? Review

Uwantme2killhim? is a a British drama, which is loosely based on a bizarre true story. The film explores the relationship between two teenage schoolmates, Mark (Jamie Blackley) and John (Toby Regbo). Although the pair attend the same school, they become close, after Mark establishes a relationship with John’s sister, Rachel (Jaime Winstone). After a few brief pornographic chat sessions, Rachel convinces Mark to defend John at school, since all the kids refer to him as a terrorist.

As the pair begin to get closer, it is revealed that John has led a bad life at home, while Mark experienced much of the same. Mark’s dad (Mark Womack) and mother (Louise Delamere) face money troubles, which is partly due to his mother’s lottery addiction. Rachel also begins to open up to Mark about her abusive boyfriend, Kevin (Mingus Johnston), who threatens Mark through the Internet.

Throughout the movie, Detective Inspector Sarah Clayton (Joanne Froggatt) begins to investigate a strange incident involving Mark. Meanwhile, Mark begins to lose control, as John begins missing school and Janet no longer makes contact with him. Instead, he receives messages from other anonymous individuals. Finally, Mark makes contact with John, who explains his sister is dead and was killed by Kevin.

After Rachel’s death, Mark’s new Internet friends slowly begin to fuel him with a hatred for Kevin. Eventually, Kelly (Stephanie Leonidas) attempts to take Rachel’s place, as Mark’s online lover, but he refuses. Meanwhile, Mark and John begin scheming to get revenge on Kevin. After Mark tells John he thinks they’re being watched, Janet (Liz White), who happens to be an MI5 agent, makes contact with Mark on the chat room.

Janet pulls the strings on the Mark puppet again, as she explains the MI5 is after John, since they believe he is a terrorist. Jane eventually convinces Mark that John is the enemy. He is planning an attack on their school and must be stopped. With a little convincing from Janet, Mark agrees to go through with the plan to kill John. Of course, everything is not what it seems. Who is pulling the strings and turning Mark into a killer? Will John survive the attack?

Review

When it comes to bizarre true stores, it is difficult to find one more strange. If you’ve heard of the insane story from June of 2003, you might find the tale a little comical. However, those who’ve heard nothing of it will find the movie suspenseful. Either way, this is definitely an enthralling film, which is actually bleak at times. Without giving too much away, it is depressing to the boy’s desperations.

Overall, the acting from Jamie Blackley and Toby Regbo was surprisingly good. Jamie was convincing as the naive teenager, who couldn’t see past the fairytale story. Toby Regbo was excellent as the intelligent, but socially awkward loner. Meanwhile, the plot is simply too bizarre to grasp and will leave you guessing until the very end, when the stunning twist leaves your jaw on the floor. I enjoyed the film, which deserves a 7.5 out of 10.
