Unforgotten Series 6 Episode 4 Recap

As this episode of Unforgotten begins, DCI Jess James (Sinead Keenan) talks to the team about the case. Back in an interview room, Marty (Maximilian Fairley) is asked about his dad. Marty says his dad couldn’t go and see Gerard because Gerard made him “be dead”. Taylor (Pixie Davies) asks Juliet Cooper (Victoria Hamilton) why they’re at the school when she’s supposed to be a socialist. Taylor complains about the school she’s lucky to go to. Marty says Gerry told him the vaccine was a plot to control them. He told Marty not to take it. As a result, Marty told his parents not to take it. Marty says his dad didn’t get the vaccine so he died of COVID. Jess and Sunny keep pushing Marty to admit something. Melinda Ricci (MyAnna Buring) sees a police officer outside and becomes nervous. The officer, Joseph Kane (Louis Dempsey), comes inside and speaks to her. Joseph mentions Father Ryan being supportive.

He tells Melinda that police in London want to speak to her. Melinda learns it’s about Gerard Cooper. She agrees to speak to them via Zoom. Murray (Jordan Long) sends Sunny an email from the letting agency. Asif (Elham Ehsas) helps Hassan (Ahmad Sakhi) get fake documents. Before the transaction concludes, Sunny and Jess arrive outside. Asif is worried even though there is no sign that Sunny and Jess are detectives. He tells them to go out the back now. Hassan and the man get out before Asif speaks to Sunny and Jess. Marty continues watching propaganda. Asif is asked about Gerard Cooper. He believes he remembers him. Asif believes he encountered him in 2020. Asif remembers that Gerard wasn’t good at maintaining his properties and he was aggressive with his tenants. Sunny mentions that Dowari family and the dispute that blew up. Asif doesn’t want to give them any answers. Sunny asks him about being from Afghanistan and being angry about seeing his people being treated like that.

As they leave, Sunny tells Jess that they need more information on the Dowari case. Sam arrives just as they leave. Asif tells Sam (David Witts) that it was just social services. They go inside and continue their spat. Asif says he doesn’t like that Sam thinks he can tell him how it’s going to be. Sam reminds him that it’s his house. Asif tells him to call the police. Jess speaks to her mom about Steve. At the station, Karen Willetts (Pippa Nixon) says Marty studied a foundation course in computer programming in 2016 at the University of Ramsgate. He was asked to leave after regularly picking the locks to the rooms of fellow students. They would come back at night and find Marty sitting in their rooms. There was no violence until the last incident. Marty tried to strangle one of the lads. The student didn’t want to pursue charges and admitted to using inappropriate language about disability. As for Melinda, she went to a Catholic girls’ school.

After university, Melinda enlisted in the navy. She served four years before leaving in 2005 following a disciplinary issue involving a fellow Muslim officer. After the crash, Melinda had to rent and had a bad experience with an Asian landlord. Melinda arrives to speak to the detectives. Karen says Melinda spent six months in a convent in Wicklow in 2009. Juliet finds Taylor who doesn’t want to go back. Juliet says they can talk about moving her if she still hates it at the end of the year. Taylor asks if it was her who killed dad. Juliet says no. Taylor asks if she told the police about the fight. Juliet insists it was just one of their rows. She asks Taylor not to mention that row to the police because they’ll come to the wrong conclusion. Taylor admits there’s something she never told her mom. Jess asks Melinda about UK United and Gerard. Melinda denies there being a romantic relationship between herself and Gerard. Then, she says there was a brief one.

She was still living in the UK, but she wasn’t seeing him in February 2021. Melinda says she didn’t know about Gerard going missing until a friend messaged her months later. Sunny asks her to forward that message to them. Melinda says it might’ve been a call. She claims their relationship just fizzled out. She insists he never got violent with her. Sunny asks where she was on February 24, 2021. Melinda says she can try to provide them with that information. She rushes home and begins looking through her calendar books. She burns the 2021 book. Fran looks through Gerard’s chats. Immigration Enforcement Agent officers raid the farm. Hassan begins panicking. The team gets together to discuss the latest evidence. There were dozens of threats to Gerard on X or Twitter. Sunny and Jess finally get the idea to speak to Taylor. Paul Merrick (Adrian Rawlins) speaks to Juliet. He tells her that the board wants a meeting. They think they have a solution.

Paul says they want to offer her an early retirement. Murray speaks to a woman about Asif who is supposedly still in contact with the Dowari family. She saw him interact with Gerard Cooper on a few occasions. Fallon (Chandrika Chevli) tells him more about Asif. One time, Asif told her that people like Gerard would be dealt with in his country. Fallon isn’t sure whether they’ll be able to find the Dowari family. They left one night and dropped out of the system. Fallon says that happened on February 28, 2021. As Murray leaves, he calls Fran to say they should swab Asif. Jess and Sunny look through Gerard’s text messages. It seems the relationship with Melinda actually started in late 2018. It started to sour near the start of 2021. Gerard pleaded with Mel to get in touch and offered to discuss the amount. He mentions that she could cause him to lose everything he ever worked for. Sunny asks Juliet and Melinda could’ve met. Jess says she still has stuff going on at home.

Sunny sees Leanne Balcombe (Georgia Mackenzie) speaking to a man nearby. He interrupts to speak to her. Leanne says she’ll call him. Fran visits Marty who says Alison Rowe (Fiona Dolman) wanted to be there if the police speak to him. Dot (Michelle Dotrice) tells him to help the young lady out. Sam learns that Hassan isn’t back from work yet. He apologizes to Asif and tries to smooth things over with him. Officer Hughes arrives at the door and explains he’s from the Immigration Enforcement Unit. Hughes says they have a warrant to search the premises. Sunny gets on an airplane. A woman walking by the marsh sees a sign about the discovery and asking for help. Doreen (Lisa Davina Phillip) bangs on the door and tries to get Marty to answer. She threatens to call the police if he doesn’t answer the door. Marty takes several pills. Sam tries to take all the blame and cover for Asif at the police station. Melinda is shown at the church. Jess talks to Buxton (Jane Jeffery) about being able to speak to Taylor.

Buxton wants some advice on this. Murray interrupts to say Juliet is downstairs. In private, Juliet tells Jess that Taylor came home a week before Gerry went missing and found a young man who worked for him. He had broken in and Taylor was alone with him. He told her that he wanted to hurt Gerry like he thought he had hurt him. Taylor convinced him that would be a bad idea. She felt sorry for him so she didn’t say anything about it. After a long delay, Juliet says his name is Marty Baines. Doreen and police rush in to check on Dot. Marty runs down the street.

Unforgotten Review

At one point, Unforgotten was really one of my favorite shows. At this point, the best thing about it remains the intro. The primary uproar from viewers has been the overwhelming politics. What else would there be to talk about otherwise? Without the constant complaints about the politics, there’s really nothing here.

The series has been dull, the suspects feel irrelevant, the performances aren’t always great, and the victim is just a name. This episode had stupid stuff in particular. The writer was so engrossed in the politics that they completely forgot common sense. Asif must have some prejudice or special abilities since he saw two random people outside in an ordinary vehicle and immediately identified them as detectives.

Sunny asked Melinda for her messages from years ago. Who keeps their messages from years ago? People delete emails and messages and they also change phones. It was beyond dumb for Melinda to respond by saying it might’ve been a call instead. It’s taken four episodes for the idiotic detectives to finally think about speaking to the victim’s daughter. Duh!

Sunny is too busy being desperate over Leanne and Jess has her head up her nonexistent husband’s butthole. The writer already made the victim a right-wing scumbag that everyone seems to hate. Why would anyone really give a crap who killed him? It’s unfortunate, but this is just another show where the victim is just a name. We need someone to care about and there isn’t a single sympathetic character here.

That’s why the politics are so important. Without those things, no one would be hate watching and there would be no reason to mention Unforgotten. It’s clear at this point that the series should’ve been canceled after series four. Series five was a perfect example of that and series six justifies the cancelation even more. The episode scores a 4 out of 10.
