“There once was a man who lived a life so strange, it had to be true. Only he could see what no one else can—the darkness inside…the real monster within…and he’s the one who must stop them. This is his calling. This is his duty. This is the life of a Grimm.” This is the opening narration to the great T.V. series, but most fans will recognize that this wasn’t used until the second season, which was unfortunate timing to say the least. The Grimm TV series first debuted on October 28, 2011 on NBC, and is currently in its fourth season. This show would probably be classified as a cop drama/science fiction, but it is so much more than that. Some of the episodes have a slight fairy tale twist to them for example: “The Three Little Pigs”, and “Little Red Riding Hood”. However, the writers done such a great job in changing up the original folk tales. For instance in one episode the pigs are hunting down and killing the wolves, instead of it being the other way around.
The show is based in Portland, Oregon around the main character, by the name of Nick Burkhardt (Played by David Giuntoli). He is a homicide detective that begins seeing visions of people’s faces turning into mythological creatures (Known as Wesen), but in the first episode he learns he is descended from a line of “guardians” known as “Grimms”. He discovers this key information from his Aunt Marie who is also dying, which is why he is picking up the ability. She gives him a detachable trailer that is full of ancient weapons, potions, and books that have been documented and collected for over centuries. Nick has a girlfriend, who he lives with Juliette Silverton (played by Bitsie Tulloch), and a partner Hank Griffin (played by Russell Hornsby). Of course, he must keep this hidden from them, but you are on the edge of your seat every episode wondering when someone will find out.
One of the things I love about this show is the way Nick completely changes everything up. Usually when a Grimm spots a Wesen, they will at some point kill them, but Nick having a badge, also gives him a conscience, so he strays from this theory. Even in the first episode, he meets a Blutbod (A wolf like creature) named Monroe (played by Silas Weir Mitchell), and develop a friendship overtime. In my opinion, Monroe is one of the best characters, thanks to his sense of humor. He is a wolf that doesn’t eat meat, but he has his reasons.
The show does an excellent job of explaining the premises and the Wesen. Each episode usually focuses on a different Wesen, which becomes the episode’s major villain, but the writers are very good at telling the history of the creature, their habitats, and their abilities. The writers definitely deserve credit for having the creativity to develop so many different Wesen, each with unique backstories.
While the show might sound a lot like a science fiction novel, it is definitely a good watch for any television fan. The first three season are currently available for Amazon Prime members.
