Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Season 4 Episode 3 Recap

Sacrifices – The episode opens with a news segment about Lagos’ problems intensified by Ekon Ameh’s (Hugh Quarshie) death squads. Elizabeth Wright (Betty Gabriel) and Adebayo “Ade” Osoji (Okieriete Onaodowan) discuss a strategy for an upcoming meeting with acting Nigerian President Okoli (Joseph Mydell). Ade explains his life growing up in Nigeria where his father was assassinated. He suggests focusing on key players – assassinated President Udo, Warlord Ekon Ameh, and acting President Okoli. He warns Okoli is adamant about maintaining Udo’s agendas and policies, even if it means taking back the country’s expansive resources. An unidentified caller informs Elizabeth of Thomas Miller’s (John Schwab) death.

Wukong Palace Casino, Shan State, Myanmar – Chao Fah (Louis Ozawa) is informed of Miller’s death when Soe Wai (Robert Ristic) announces the next shipment has arrived. Soe claims Tin Tun (Jim Lau) adamantly wants him there. Chao questions why but goes along with it.

Washington DC – Jack Ryan (John Krasinski), James Greer (Wendell Pierce), and Domingo Chavez (Michael Pena) remain in the clear as long as Miller’s death is suspected a suicide. When Mike November (Michael Kelly) arrives, they work on a plan to find Chao. Ryan points out their only assurance is Domingo Chavez (Michael Pena) will track Chao down. He suggests utilizing it to their advantage.

Wetthe Cove, Shan State, Myanmar – Chao demands to know why his presence is desperately needed. Tin Tun is quick to pass the blame to the “higher-ups.” Chao and Soe are shocked to the shipment is girls and women. Intervening when the victims are prepped for being sprayed down with a water hose, Chao warns of illness. As Chao returns to his vehicle, Soe catches up with him to voice his concern for Kyi Fah (Jacelyn Parry). He says his concern isn’t Chao’s dislike for Tin Tun, only his sister.

White House, Washington DC – President Bachler (David Bedella) wants to discuss Lagos, Udo’s assassination, and former CIA Director Miller. Ryan, on the other hand, broaches the subject of stepping down as the acting CIA Director. Bachler is none too happy with his decision. Ryan suggests James Greer as his replacement. Greer is equally surprised by Ryan’s recommendation when Bachler informs him over the phone. He is at his Greer Jr. (Anthony J Abraham) football game when he got the news.

San Louis Obispo, Central California – Chavez knows he will never outdo Enrique “Tio” Chavez (Carlos Kaniowsky) while cleaning out his dead drops. Over dinner, Chavez warns Tio that it isn’t safe for them to stick around. Rodrigo Marin (Ricardo Carrico) and Alejandro Marquez (Diego Wallraff) will be coming with the full force of the Marquez Cartel.

Lagos, Nigeria, Presidential Palace – President Okoli tells Elizabeth how pleased he is with her Committee speech. He says she could be the first CIA Director that he enjoys working with. He warns that the only problem is the American and Nigerian political systems are not supportive of their “brand of enlightenment.” After asking Ekon to join them, he asks her to help them solve President Udo’s assassination.

Tio’s Ranch, San Louis Obispo – Chavez is surprised when November shows up. He asks how they knew he would be there. November says his tattoo and Ryan’s access to Catholic Church records.

Fah Residence, Shan State Myanmar – Kyi and Chao discuss their dangerous current predicament and leaving the Triad. He voices concern about Tin Tun and Soe grows suspicious of him. It is vital for him to convince them of his being innocent in the raid in Yucatan.

Langley, Virginia, CIA Headquarters – Elizabeth congratulates Greer on his recent promotion to acting CIA Director. Changing the topic, she inquires about the task of extracting data from a burner phone that belonged to an assassin. Greer turns to Patrick Klinghoffer (Adam Bernett), a computer whiz. One phone number draws a red flag. It is connected to “BizHub” in Bethesda. November alerts Greer of him and Ryan finding Chavez.

Tio’s Ranch, San Louis Obispo – Ryan joins November and Chavez for a drink before getting down to business. It isn’t until morning that Ryan gets to talk to Chavez. Chao is key to stopping “Convergence.” Miller’s death cut the only tie the CIA had to Chao. Chavez questions if Chao is still alive. If so, the Triad has him under close surveillance. Chavez suggests sending up a signal which would be extremely risky. They agree the best place to start is the Marketplace where  Marin and Chao’s meeting place.

Shan State Myanmar – Soe claims Kyi and Bennu Fah (Ryn Greenwell) departed from the compound on the day of the raid on the borner of Yucatan. Chao chalks it up as paranoia but Soe is aware of his trying to leave the Triad. He offers to let him leave but Bennu and Kyi are going nowhere. When Chao fails to convince Soe to leave with them or change his mind about Kyi and Bennue, he executes him.

Yucatan, Mexico – Chavez offers Inspector Morales (Joao Didelet) money in exchange for contacting Marin. Morales warns that it is impossible to get anywhere near Marin. After claiming to only visit the port when shipments arrive, Morales denies working for Triad. Chavez has a difficult time believing his claim. Morales voices concern about taking his money when Chavez orders him to stand up. At the Municipal Police Department, they meet Ryan and November. A raid at the docks is in the works.

Progreso Port, Yucatan, Mexico – The Federales arrives throw normal operations for a loop. Morales confiscates all shipping crates at the port. Tin Tun’s compound, Chao drops Soe’s lifeless body on the floor. He accuses Soe of being a mole of the Triad. The Marquez Cartel, with Marin in the lead, arrives at the port. Marin demands to know what Morales is up to. Morales says his strategy paid off because he is standing in front of him. As they advance toward the lab, Marin asks what could possibly be worth dying for. Chavez says, “Family.” Marin accuses him of betraying his family. Chavez admits his memories of his father are not pleasant. Ryan demands information surrounding the Marketplace while November captures photos.

An altercation between Marin and Chavez results in Marin’s getting saran wrapped. Chavez slices the wrap open enough for him to breathe and say, “Croatia, Dubrovnik.” He claims Josip Olafsky (Visar Vishka) operates the Marketplace. Chavez orders him to unlock his phone.

Greer Residence – After a quick apology, Greer tells James Jr. that a call from President Bachler pulled him away from his game. When the call ends, Bill Tuttle (Michael McElhatton) knocks on the door. Tuttle orders him to “stop.” When Greer confronts him, Tuttle claims to know a lot about him, starting with the house not belonging to him. Repeating his order, Tuttle takes his leave as the episode ends.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Review

To me, there is simply no better way to describe the series than by referring to it as a fine aging wine. Everything builds oh so slowly but ever so smoothly. Excitement and suspense aren’t a problem as neither is lacking. That said, the show certainly isn’t without its flaws. Some of the Elizabeth and Ade stuff feels fluffy, as do Cathy Mueller and Zeyara Lemos’s roles thus far. I completely understand the importance of what they are doing and how it impacts the development of the show, yet I feel some of those interactions are entirely unneeded. On the other hand, I can appreciate Mueller’s character isn’t solely reliant on her relationship with Ryan.

The only other complaint I would have are all the characters and globetrotting. Nonetheless, the characters are interesting and it’s even more intriguing learning about the unique histories of some of these areas, but it is a lot to keep up with. I also like how the titles have such an important meaning in the show. This episode deserves an easy 5.6.
