Learn To Drive – The series opens with Chi (Lucia Keskin) mindlessly passing the time in her room by throwing a sticky toy against the ceiling. At one point the toy becomes animated and chides her over waiting for her parent’s return to make dinner. As she tries to explain her laziness away as being a “stay-at-home daughter,” the doorbell interrupts.
Opening the door, she’s greeted by two officers (Omar Ibrahim) who request to come inside where they reveal the death of her parents (Martha Cope and Darren Strange). It turns out that there was one thing salvageable from the accident, a microwaveable dinner that she later eats.
Chi is joined by Dan/Dave (Daniel Fearn), Lucas (Jamie Bisping), and Karen (Selin Hizli) at the local beach to spread her parent’s ashes. Karen is not only appalled to learn that Chi has blended the ashes in one urn but she’s already spread them into two piles at her feet.
During the reading of the will with the family solicitor, Adam Farrow (Sunil Patel) Chi learns that she’s being left the house, under the condition that she completes a list of basic demands, such as learning to tell time. Dan is left a blender and Karen walks away with a rug that she makes note of having purchased herself. Lucas is left empty-handed.
When Dan drops Chi off at home, she expresses the desire to move in with him and Karen. Although Dan appears all for it, Karen immediately makes it known she’s against it. She also appears to be a bit sour over Chi inheriting her childhood home. Chi wanders around the house aimlessly before making a very poor attempt at cleaning her room by vacuuming clothes off the ground. While looking through the kitchen cupboards, Chi has a quick conversation with what appears to be two tiny versions of herself tossing a cheese ball back and forth. One of the miniatures offers condolences while the other teases her about restocking the cabinets.
Elsewhere, Karen enlists the help of Lucas to spy on Chi while she researches online how to get her childhood home back. While attempting to rearrange artwork on the kitchen walls, Chi has another imaginary encounter with her parents, who harshly encourage her to get off her butt and try new things. Although they make several suggestions, Chi appears to be more drawn to the idea of learning to drive, despite the irony.
Chi sets out to tackle her driving dilemma by asking random strangers in town if they are driving instructors. Although no one takes her seriously, her luck seemingly improves when she spots and stops a vehicle with driving school logos coming up the street. Both the instructor, Gary (Steve Brody), and the student are practically speechless but let her join. She tells them to pretend she’s not there but makes that nearly impossible by bombarding them with questions.
While Chi continues with the lesson, Lucas shows up at her house to spy on her as requested by Karen. He appears to spend several minutes outside peeping in the windows before discovering the front door unlocked.
Once the lesson ends, Gary agrees to teach Chi if she fills out his required forms. He soon realizes that he doesn’t have the forms. Although he claims taking her home to get the forms would be incredibly unprofessional, that’s where they end up. Gary’s wife, Helen (Sue Elliott Nichols) is just as confused as he is about Chi’s sudden appearance in their life. Things get even weirder when Lucas shows up.
When Chi goes to the front door to get Lucas, Helen asks Gary if his bringing Chi home has anything to do with Alison (Phoebe Elizabeth Royal). After denying that it does, she accuses him of being a pedophile. Much later that evening during dinner, Lucas asks about the pretty girl in a photo. Gary tearfully reveals her as their daughter Alison, who is apparently away at a military camp.
Even in bed with Dan, awaiting the results of a pregnancy test, Karen is stuck on Chi being left her childhood home.
Gary gives Chi her first driving lesson but it is him that ends up confessing how lonely he is with his daughter away. Before he realizes it, Chi has talked him into calling Helen with his confession, which leads to an argument.
Lucas and Chi revisit the family solicitor Adam to inform him that she’s learned to drive. Adam is completely stunned and attempts to explain that there’s no reason for her to update him. Neither Chi nor Lucas appear to understand what he’s telling them.
Gary shows up unexpectedly at Chi’s house to reveal that Helen has kicked him out. Chi not only tells him that he can stay at her house as long as needed, but she offers to throw in her dad’s clothes. Karen freaks out when Chi calls to ask what she did with the clothes so she can give them to Gary. She races over to the house to find Chi, Lucas, and Gary playing Twister. She makes Gary leave but has to send Dan and Lucas after him once she learns that Chi gave him the spare key.
Things You Should Have Done Review
What a completely dreadful show. It’s a shame that the lip-syncing skit that played as the credits rolled was more entertaining than the show. I’d give the series a 3.7 out of 10. It’s a shame too because the show could have been really good. While the concept might not have been a precedent, it certainly could have been intriguing. Despite all the negatives, I have to give credit to Lucia Keskin for creating this at such a young age.
