The Waterfront Season 1 Episode 8 Finale Recap

Lost At Sea – The episode begins with Bree Buckley (Melissa Benoist) waking up on a yacht in the middle of the ocean.

Belle Buckley (Maria Bello) wakes Harlan Buckley (Holt McCallany) to tell him that Bree didn’t come home last night. She asks if Grady (Topher Grace) could have had anything to do with it. He gets up and tells her he’s got things he has to do to get ready.

Cane Buckley (Jake Weary) is in the shower when he hears a noise downstairs. He grabs a gun and goes downstairs, where he runs into Peyton Buckley (Danielle Campbell). He asks about Savannah (Billie Roy), but she says she left her with her parents. He tells her it’s not safe to be there right now. She asks what he’s been doing, and he tells her the truth about the smuggling. She also tells him that she has the Ring App on her phone and knows he hasn’t slept at home for the past two nights. He tells her he slept with Jenna Tate (Humberly Gonzalez). She asks if he loves her. He tells her he loves her.

Harlan is at the fish house covering up the bodies with ice when Cane comes in. Harlan asks if he has found Bree. Cane says no, he just destroyed his marriage. Cane then asks why Grady would take Bree. Harlan calls Grady. Grady tells him they are going to make an even swap, him for Bree. Grady then sends him coordinates for the middle of the ocean. Seconds later, Harlan and Cane discuss the Bree situation with the rest of the family.

Peyton is about to confront Jenna outside her house when Jenna tells her she just came from the hospital because he dad died last night. Peyton ends up hugging her.

Belle calls Emmett Parker (Terry Serpico) to collect his men. He asks if Harlan still carries a grudge over his father. She asks him what he thinks. He tells her they have so much history, and he remembers her from their teenage years. He then asks about her and Harlan’s relationship. She says it has been hard. He says it must have been especially hard with the debt they are facing, which completely surprises her. He tells her she had the right idea with the land deal, and Harlan isn’t what he used to be.

Bree finds a wooden clothes hanger in her room, breaks it, and makes a weapon. Shortly after that, the door to her room opens, and she is about to attack her visitor when she realizes it is Diller Hopkins (Brady Hepner). She asks what he is doing there. He tells her he saw them take her. Before their conversation gets much further, they hear voices from above. She hides Diller in the closet while a man opens her door and tells her to come with him.

On deck, Grady introduces himself and offers Bree a meal. He also tells her that Harlan is on his way as they speak.

Peyton helps Jenna make funeral arrangements and makes sure her family knows about the death. Jenna asks how she knows how to do it all. Peyton says you find out what needs to be done and you do it. Jenna apologizes to her for sleeping with Cane. Peyton says they aren’t going to talk about that right now.

Shawn and Cane prepare to hide in the smugglers’ hold of Harlan’s boat while he goes to meet Grady. Cane asks him what he is still doing there. Shawn asks him if he knows what it’s like not to belong.

Bree asks Grady why Harlan is so important to him. He says it’s because Harlan is the ultimate cowboy. Grady said he was spoiled and soft. Bree distracts Grady by pretending the meal is undercooked. When the chef comes over, she grabs a bottle, smashes it over the cook’s head, and grabs his gun. She orders them to turn the boat around, and when they don’t comply, she shoots one of the men in the leg. Diller hears the shot from below and comes out of hiding just as Grady orders his men to turn the boat around. Things immediately change when one of Grady’s men grabs Diller. Bree ends up giving up her gun, but when she is down on her knees, she uses her makeshift clothes hanger weapon to stab Grady in the arm. He shoots her in the thigh and has his men throw her overboard. Diller manages to throw her a flotation raft before he is apprehended and taken below.

Harlan shows up unarmed and boards Grady’s yacht. While Harlan talks with him, Shawn and Cane exit the smuggler’s hold in Harlan’s boat and board Grady’s boat. Grady tells Harlan about throwing Bree overboard and exchanging her for Diller. Below deck, Cane is ambushed by one of Grady’s men, but Shawn is there to save him. Not long after this, they join Grady and Harlan on deck with their guns. Grady and his men drop their guns. Diller gets on Harlan’s boat while Shawn tries to collect Grady’s men’s weapons. At one point, one of Grady’s men intercepts him, and a fight and a shootout ensue. Harlan manages to grab a gun and take out several of Grady’s men while Grady runs off to get a weapon. Cane goes after him and eventually catches up to him. By the time Cane has him held at gunpoint, Harlan catches up. Grady drops his gun and tries negotiating with them, but both end up shooting him. After this, they set out to look for Bree.

Bree is shown on the life raft having nightmares of the night she watched her granddad get tortured and murdered. She eventually wakes up and shoots a flare into the air. Harlan and Cane eventually follow her and get her to the hospital.

At the hospital, Harlan tries to convince Cane he did the right thing by killing Grady. He also tells Shawn that they owe him big time. Drew tells Harlan that the crime scene was cleaned up. Not long after that, the family learns that Bree is going to be alright and the surgery went well. After the news, Cane says he has something he has to do and takes off. He goes to see Jenna. She tells him about Peyton being there and helping her make the arrangements for the funeral. She also tells him that she screwed up and he was a good distraction from her dad. He tells her it was real, but she disagrees and tells him he needs to go home.

Diller goes to sit with Bree in her hospital room. He tells her he isn’t leaving. She thanks him for throwing that life raft. He tells her she saved herself.

Cane returns home to see Peyton and have a drink. She asks him if it is over. He tells her that everything with his dad is over, as well as him and Jenna. He asks her about them. She asks him what he wants. He says he wants them to be good and apologizes. She kisses him and tells him they are fine.

Belle is visiting with Bree when she receives a phone call for Emmett. He tells her that he spoke with his father, and he is willing to help her with the land deal as long as it is she who takes over. She finds Harlan, but she doesn’t tell him about the deal. Instead, she goes to the fish house, where Emmett’s men are beating Wes Benson (Dave Annable) senseless. She asks if they are going to kill him. Emmett tells her that Wes will be no good to them dead, but they do need his loyalty. Wes tells them he will do anything they want, and that’s where the episode ends.

The Waterfront Review

As far as finales go, I guess you couldn’t ask for more. Everything was wrapped up just enough, and little was teased to offer a second season. That said, I really do not see this getting a second season. I would be surprised if it did. I won’t go as far as saying it was horrible, but it wasn’t great either. Watchable? Perhaps. It would have been a lot more watchable if the episodes were cut in half and things didn’t beat around the bush. I’d have to give this episode a 5.5 out of 10.
